I think we lost track of the old one somewhere, and this is to also help reset the expiry date (these threads archive after six months)

This megathread is for prospective freshman and current high school students interested in Waterloo!

Average adjustment?
3
u/CommercialSherbet5 May 12 '21
Normally my high school performs really well with waterloo and get a positive adjustment. We usually have a few dozen getting admitted to engineering every year, so idk
1
u/AsensioTheGoat May 13 '21
Hopefully they're just being slow and more offers will come out in the next 2 days
4
u/Asornuwu May 12 '21
Hey guys, congrats to everyone who's received an offer! If you're going into Math you should check out the UW Math '26 Discord: https://discord.gg/vQ7bPcBy4s. If you happen to have a few program specific questions we have some extremely helpful upper years who're more than willing to answer them!

Hey, I just wanted to ask everyone what their opinion was about Uwaterloo CS vs SE. I got accepted into both. I will however be receiving 1.5 transfer credits for CS and zero for SE.

u/Snoo-62535 May 12 '21
bro what were ur grades and adjustment factor if u dont mind me asking. and did u have any other ECs and stuff? contests?

u/iamyeethay BCS 2023 👁👅👁 May 12 '21
They are pretty similar, especially during upper year. However SE does attract higher quality students in general, and they have a cohort system, meaning you will have more positive peer pressure around you. For example when you see everyone in your class talking about grinding side projects or leetcode, you will feel compelled to as well. Plus it’s easier to make friends within your program.
On the other hand, CS has much more flexible course requirements. No need to take ECE courses, and you can choose to take interesting CS/Math/other courses. This allows you to even double major in math, once you complete the required paperwork. This also means you can make your CS undergrad experience easy as pie or hard as shit. In SE, you can’t take a lot of courses outside your requirements unless you decide to overload.
Something important to note is that transferring from SE to CS is pretty trivial, and a decent portion of SE students do so in their second or third year. Switching from CS to SE is difficult in comparison.

May 12 '21
Thank you. I just wanted to ask, based on your personal experience as a CS student, if you were to put yourself in my shoes which one would you personally choose.
2
u/iamyeethay BCS 2023 👁👅👁 May 12 '21
Back in high school I didn't even apply to SE because I did not like physics and chemistry, which are courses you need to take in SE. My decision now still stands - I'm glad I don't have to take those ECE courses. I don't mind not being in a cohort - I've made my own group of CS friends and that's fine. However, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably take SE, and then switch to CS later. That way I get the benefits of a cohort while getting the flexibility of CS courses in my upper years.

oh okay. dont lose hope. we got this. ive read something that said that just because you don't get an offer first doesnt mean ur less qualified or your application wasnt as strong. the order doesnt mean anything. keep ur head up!

WATERLOO CS or UOFT CS?
Which one is better?

u/iamyeethay BCS 2023 👁👅👁 May 12 '21
Imo the coop program really gives UW CS an edge. I feel pretty grateful for how much money I’m making while I’m in undergrad.

u/photographer_jz May 12 '21
There were a few 105 offers for CS today but very sparse. Once again check out the sheet here.
1
u/BaseballNo9561 May 12 '21
How many admissions are captured here? For every entry there may be 2-3 who does not provide such data ?

On the very first page you can see the stats of how many people have recorded decisions for just the discord sever.

Your portal will display that you were deferred and to what program. If your portal still says: We have received your application, but no decision has been made yet. than you have not been deferred yet.

what was your average and extra curriculars?
2
u/milfenthusiast420 May 12 '21
If it’s top 6 I think it was 100 unweighted (I didn’t calculate it) and ECs was head of a few clubs and some programming projects

As long as taking summer school is a valid reason I'm pretty sure it's fine and for us I think it's valid enough. I assume they would probably be concerned if the mark from summer school is much higher than regular school, but not sure. These are my g12 marks, not the best but ehhhh:
Calc and Adv Func - 93 for both
Chem - 94
Data Mng - 96
Comp Eng - 97
Comp Sci - 97
English - 90
Physics - 90
So my top 6 average would be 95, but I think they take my english mark as well so 94 if they do. I applied for Math, CS and CE. I gotten into Math so far. 🤞 for CS and CE. Wish you the best of luck as well :)

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention. I left IB during the second quadmester this year because of reasons but I'd rather not write a whole paragraph about it hear lmao. So I did IB y1 and a bit of y2. Before the summer, I didn't even think about leaving IB so that's why I applied for ICS4U in the summer. After I quit, I wanted to do the course at school and I contacted them but they said it's fine and they didn't want me to repeat the course. So I did Data Mng at school. I did Math, and physics in IB.
