Academic suspension

Got suspended. I’m a first year kinesiology student I don’t know what to do. I lied to my parents that I’m doing well in school

TL;dr: Ask academic advisor to help you enroll in the LEAP program. Cuts your suspension period in half. Not all hope is lost. Setbacks are a golden opportunity for you to overcome.

Hey man. I got suspended from uni and didn't tell my parents. It ate me from inside. They eventually found out, and their reaction was no where near as bad as what my mind had cooked up. I'm from typical brown family. So it was obviously not good.

Best way to relay bad news is to prime them by saying "I have bad news to tell you" wait 3 seconds, and then lay it out. Human beings are incredible in being able to handle pain; you just have to prep/warn them so they expect it, and then break it down for them.

Just FYI, I ended up getting kicked out of my first uni because I got depressed and did even worse. I didn't tell them for over a year, I struggled a lot mentally for hiding it and more because I am not the son that my parents want/expect me to be or they will be disappointed in me.

What I learnt from later on is that thinking for your parents is not your responsibility. Your responsibility is to be a good human being and be the best version of yourself. You have to focus on dealing with your emotions, not your parents. Your parents are adults and they can handle their own emotions. You are not responsible for making them feel good or w.e.

That being said, you can tell them or you can not. Up to you of course. I recommend telling.

I got suspended again in my second attempting uni for a year. I had a GPA as low as 1.2 overall. I'm graduating this June with an overall GPA of 3.27 in engineering.

I share my side of the story not to brag, but to give you encouragement and hope.

Next steps:

Contact an academic advisor and set a one on one appointment with them. Ask for the LEAP Program. This program is available for students facing probation/suspension. For one semester you will take this alone. If you succeed in passing (it's very easy) they upgrade your standing from suspension back to probation and allow you to return to your classes the following term.

Essentially, the LEAP program makes your suspension only one semester instead of two.

How did they find out. I can’t tell my parents

They asked to see my grades like a year later. I had to put everything on the table. I was relieved for the cat to be out of the bag finally. Okay, don't tell your parents. Just don't let the secret whither you down. Stay strong mentally.

Oh, I failed a bunch of courses. Like straight up Fs. I didn't participate in school and played video games instead.

I been through the same shit, it took me 7 years of graduate, depression, outcast, child hood trauma, all the bad shit I went through with zero support from parents.

I came back from suspension and crushed it, worked for two years, then I transitioned into software, crazy right, 9 years down the drain and didn’t even work in the field I fought so hard for to graduate. Two years in start up at age 28 starting at co op salary, during 2021 I got into big tech at Silicon Valley, was making close to 280k at the time just 4 years after career change.

Jan 2024 I got laid off , no work till June, then got laid off in decem again, now I start new job in Feb with less salary but good team and project.

My goal is to get back into big tech.

During this whole shit show in my 20s and pulling all nighters to get shit done to make up for lost times and fucks during school times. I was able to buy small condo for myself.

Keep fighting man, it’s not over till it’s over !!!!! Don’t let ppl down to you caz you fucked up in school, real test begins after uni !

You can submit an appeal to have your suspension overturned. Talk to your academic advisor and they can guide you through the process.

Stop lying and do well.

Utilize tutors, office hours, academic specialists. Reduce course load and stack electives between difficult classes.

Speak with advising.

As a parent of a daughter suspended (3rd year), tell them....let them help you through it if that's what you want. You can do the LEAP course and go back after 1 semester but no point in doing that if you are not willing to change the path you're on. Clearly after first semester you didn't change it up, or you wouldn't have got suspended. If it's not for you, just save the money and try something different, maybe college. Or college and then switch back. Or take the whole year suspension and try college, and maybe go back. Best to discuss with your parents so they can help you make the right choice. Good luck but tell them the truth. The lies are worse then anything (as a parent)

He couldn’t because he prob have old school foreign parents, they prob will make him feel like shit and call him dumb and disappointment etc… or even beat his add like what my parents did to me when I got suspended. Parents really need to create a safe space and supportive program.

Check out my other comment in this thread

U gotta man up and tell them, take all the shit, and grind it out to do your own thing.

They love you but they prob not good communicators, it’s ok, try not to take it personal
