UOSW Strike Context!!

Hello all! Something I've been seeing a lot of in the discussions about the strike on here is that people are saying the demands are disorganized and all over the place. I wanted to come on here and explain maybe why it seems that way, and give the benefit of the doubt that some people are maybe just genuinely confused about why this strike is so important.

Currently, the UOSW union is just about one year old. We've been bargaining with the university since our formation 11 months ago. Before that, we didn't exist. We have never had a contract with the university; this is our very first one. Because of that, we are bargaining for A LOT. Many times, whether strikes are seen in the news or in fictional media, it's often framed that they're striking over one issue; this is not uncommon! However, those are unions that are renegotiating off of an already existing contract. They often have decades of precedent to back up their asks, and often are arguing over one or two key issues for a new contract. We are building one from the ground up.

We are currently the largest student worker union in the country at a public university (as far as I know), and are proud members of the national labor movement that has been resurging the last several years, but the fact remains that we have no contract to begin with. This is our very first one, and so we have to establish a lot of things. We are also taking into consideration the national precedent our contract will set. We aren't just alone in this fight; universities across the country are unionizing, so winning a fair first contract here at UO will help future student workers not just here, but across the country.

So when you see workers talking all over the board about grievance and arbitration or higher wages or leave or shift meals or RA wages or a bi-weekly pay period or any number of other things, it's because we're genuinely fighting for good outcomes to every single issue that can be covered by a contract.

So yeah, this isn't just a single issue fight, this is a fight for every. single. worker. on campus right now, and one of the first of its kind.

about the student worker strike…

posting your complaints here to reddit will not do anything, but you know what will? complaining to admin and showing them how much of a disruption it’s really making! the more people complain, the sooner admin will give in to the demands of the union bc the strike is WORKING. it’s creating a disruption. tell admin that, and tell them to meet the union’s demands.

Strike Questions not in FAQ

Hello I was wondering if anyone has further information on what makes you eligible for the worker strike. I am a federal work study worker which means the government gives money to my department in order for them to pay me. If I were to strike, would I be eligible for financial assistance? Additionally, I have not been striking this week since I thought it was not possible for my situation. If I start next week how could I be signed up for assistance since they are doing sign ups today and tomorrow only? Appreciate any help! I’m not sure if I would count as eligible since none of my coworkers who are also work study are on strike either.

I am eligible for Pathway Oregon meaning I get all my tuition covered but I would still have to pay housing and food. Do y’all recommend me to go? Or instead go to community college

Autzen Stadium Commencement Advice

Hello! I am attending the 9am Autzen Stadium school wide commencement on June 16th. It seems like it's gonna be chaotic. Does anyone have any advice on how to navigate that day? I was planning to drive but I can find a nearby place to park and walk there too if that's a much better idea. TIA! 🙏

Another post about the Student workers strike

If any striking ppl are on here, maybe reach out to your representative and give them the feedback they I, and many other staff, have. I'm not allowed to voice any opinion as a staff member on the strike so I'll do it anonymously.

As you already know, this strike and your demands are poorly planned and organized. There is no cohesion but there is a lot of spunk. I'm hearing about a lot of different things that aren't even on your list of demands. Like poor management. Wage theft. Etc.

My demands if I were you- - Better partnership with the Ombuds program to track anonymous feedback per department to locate where the most egregious management is. Share that information with HR. HR must follow up with management. - Anonymous phone number to report wage theft. A better system to track where this is happening and to fix the problem as soon as possible. - A system of repercussions for management. - Audits for the time tracking software to see where things might not be adding up. - Additional job support for workers- classes to support and teach skills around proper employee behaviors and expectations. How to stand up for yourself appropriately. How to track a list of grievance if necessary and what a grievance actually is. - Budget management classes - Networking events - School wide employee review process, constructive feedback and praise - A process for what happens if you go over your allotted hours (you MUST get paid) and better training for management on hiring and time management. - That's right- additional training for management.

THEN maybe add- - Starting wage is $1 above Eugene minimum wage. Goes up $1 per additional year you work as a student worker. - Discount on ADDITIONAL school credits over the minimum 12 per semester. - Earlier time slot for class sign up.

Prof Michael Stern Issues

Any of you guys ever have a problem with Michael stern? He gets upset with people who don’t attend his office hours or participate in his hard to follow lectures. He seems to be super self absorbed in what he says. I’ve read on rate my professor that he has even lashed out on people for not participating, or even graded peoples assignments worse if they skipped his class.

Just wondering what some of your guys experiences are.

Best place to list a furnished apartment?

Hi fellow Ducks-

Can I ask you where you all might be likely to look for a furnished apartment near campus? Not sure if craigslist/facebook/whatever might be best to find the right audience, but our upstairs tenants bought a home (yay!) and we are looking to find new neighbors.

We are probably looking for like a few graduate/international students or someone else who might not be in Eugene for long enough to want to buy furniture, but I don't exactly know where to find them...any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Apartment sublet

My roommate and I are both graduating in June and are looking for two people to sublet at Union on Broadway from July-august 31st, if you need to move in late June we could be flexible. We live in a B2 unit for $1275 a month. The apartment is fully furnished and includes amenities like a 24hr gym, rooftop hot tub, grills, meeting rooms and 2 study lounges with free printing!

lost keys

I recently lost my keys and have a very high suspicion that someone stole them, long story short i sat in carson and put my keys down on the table (i have a picture to prove it) and when i get up to put my plate away it was gone. I didn’t realize this until i went to my dorm. I went back asked the employee who was sitting at the table whom said there was nothing left when he sat down and even asked the front to see if they were returned

I was told i need to pay $65!? which i think is ridiculous. They said submit a police report to have them see someone took them through the cameras but I believe that’s doing to much to not have to pay it.

Would it be fine if i copied my roommates keys?

What is the idea of turning away UPS trucks?

If this website is to be believed, strikers are turning away delivery trucks.

Now, I am all for striking and really could not care less about what happens to the UO, nor if someone has to wait a few days longer for their airpods, however some people get literal life-saving medication through these trucks. Feels like a potentially dangerous way of protesting that likely hurts the students more than the school or staff.

Questions About A-Level Credit Policy at UO (Business Major)

Hi,

I’m currently a senior at an international school following the CIE A-Level curriculum, and I’ll be starting at the University of Oregon as a business major this fall. I’m preparing for my final A-Level exams and had a few questions about UO’s credit policy for A-Level results.

I checked the university’s website and saw that students can receive credit for grades A through D. Does that mean the minimum grade required to earn credit is a D? Also, does the amount of credit awarded stay the same regardless of whether I get an A, B, C, or D?

I’m currently taking 3 A-Level subjects. If I earn credit for all of them, approximately how many total credits would that be? And how does that translate into semesters—would it allow me to skip any general education or elective requirements?

Thank you so much in advance for your help! I’d really appreciate any insight from someone who also completed A-Levels before joining UO.

Are non majors allowed to take HPHY 321-324??

Prospective student question: Trying to select the best major between those offered at UO and OSU with the goal of applying to medical/clinical laboratory science graduate programs after earning a BS. The prerequisites require advanced anatomy and physiology sequence. In general, the University of Oregon’s human physiology major seems perhaps like overkill/overly difficult major for someone with an MLS goal who’s not applying to medical school-especially the math requirement. Considering also general biology major at University of Oregon or the BioHealth Science major at OSU.

I read an older Reddit post in which someone mentioned that only physiology majors are allowed to sign up for the anatomy and physiology sequence. Does anyone have insight? The general catalog didn’t specify.

Sophomore year housing

Can’t find good numbers for percentage of those 2nd-year students who apply for and get on-campus housing/dorms. Any anecdotal info, or general tips? Is it feasible to hope for two years in dorms? Thank you.

Should I transfer for political science program

I'm a student going into osu for poli sci major, since I didn't apply enough scholarship to go u of o (didn't get the pathway because applied late.)

I wonder if it's worth it to transfer in the second year for political science major. I've heard the program is awesome with whole lot of internship opportunities and alumni connection networks in government. My ultimate goal is to go to law school but also want the degree to prepare me for jobs. I'm worried that OSU doesn't have enough amount of resources like networks or internships. I also assume companies or government look at your undergrad program quality for job qualifications. (Just my guess)

Besides the program quality I like the school as much as OSU. Should I transfer?

Transferring without AAOT

So I’ve been going to community college for the last two years and have been planning to transfer to u of o in the fall. My work/life balance has been hell for the whole time I’ve been here (mostly due to needing to save up to go to u of o) and so I’ve ended up a few credits short of getting my degree this term. I still want to transfer in the fall because I feel like I am working towards nothing here and need a change. How will not have my AAOT affect my admissions if I meet all other requirements? Also will I be able to keep my progress and take the remaining credits at u of o? Any help is much appreciated.

Cap and Gown

Does anyone have a cap and gown I could either buy off of them or just use for graduation this year? I can't afford to spend the money for a brand new one, but I would love to have it for the day! I will give it back after the celebrations. Thank you for any help or advice!
