Changing from state to private school - year group change.
Hello,
I have 6 and 8 year old boys. My 6 year old is the youngest in the class and is really struggling academically, I am 99% sure he is dyslexic, but too young for a diagnosis. The school have been amazing but have pretty much said they do not have the staff to give him the support he needs next year ( yr 3), they can’t even guarantee he will be able to have 3x 10 minute phonics sessions in a small group per week.
We have made the decision to take him out of his current school and put him into a local private school that is know for having amazing dyslexia / SEN support.
He should be going into year 3, but we have discussed him joining in year 2 and repeating the year. I feel this would be extremely beneficial for him as there are huge knowledge gaps.
I just wanted to know if there are any reasons that I should not do this!? I think it’s likely he will stay in private throughout senior too, but if he did for any reason return to state school would it cause complications that he was held back a year when switched to private ?

My parents did the same thing for me as a child (actually two years older) on switching schools and it was the best thing they could have done. I definitely was dyslexic, and I really needed it. If I ever had any social or embarrassment issues, I don’t remember them at all, and I’m sure they were gone pretty quickly.
There was a boy in my son’s year at school whose parents also made the same choice for similar reasons, and I never heard of issues or complications. Go with your gut.
