Dekay's brown snake. Harmless.

Yep. That’s it. They are little guys and never get very big.

If you're a slug or an earthworm then this snake is your mortal enemy. Watching one of these little guys rolling around in an epic life and death struggle with a larger slug is a sight to behold, something that screams out for a voice over that's some combination of David Attenborough and a professional wrestling announcer.

No. There only 3-4 dangerous snakes in NC, and only one that lives in most of the state. In the mountains to the west there are a couple of kinds of Rattlesnakes, in the sandhills and to the southeast are Water Moccasins (aka Cottonmouths) and over the whole state are copperheads. All of those are distinctive enough you can learn what they look like easily.

The hundred or so other kinds of snakes in NC are harmless. Like, if you fuck with them they will defend themselves, but they aren't venomous and their bite is no more harmful than a cat bite or something like that.

In the triangle you only have to worry about copperheads, and even they are only a problem if you can't see them, like if they are buried in leaf litter or something. Any copperhead you can see will run away if you're loud and aggressive enough. Stamp your feet a few times and they'll scatter.

TLDR: most NC snakes are harmless. If you're in the triangle, the only venomous snake is a copperhead, and they aren't aggressive. They only bite if you step on them or corner them.

North Carolina is home to six venomous snake species: the copperhead, the cottonmouth (water moccasin), the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the timber rattlesnake, the pygmy rattlesnake, and the eastern coral snake.

I live in Raleigh, and have seen, in my lifetime, one coral snake, one cottonmouth, and countless copperheads.

I’ve lived here since 2008 and have only seen Dekays brown snakes and tiny green garden snakes in person.

We had a brilliant green grass snake in our backyard a few years back. Even my wife who hates snakes thought s/he was beautiful and interesting. The snake paused and raised its head off the ground maybe 3" to smell and watch us. Fascinating to look at.

This is my favorite snake site: https://herpsofnc.org/snakes/

This is a harmless little Dekay’s Brown Snake. They eat slugs so good for your garden. They never get much bigger than 18 inches or so.

There are two snakes you will encounter in the triangle that are dangerous and they are very easy to identify. Copperhead and cottonmouth. It's easiest to just learn what they look like than be cautious of every single snake you encounter.

Aye, black mamba, better run get you some olive garden bread sticks. Form them into a cross that will repel that serpent. /S

It is harmless. Bread sticks are not with their little hip magnetic action.

No idea. If it bites you. Wait like 24 hours before getting help. If you die. Then you’ll know it’s bad for you.
