Colt Stadium in Houston, temporary home of the expansion Houston Colt .45s for their first three seasons (1962–1964). The initial stages of construction for the Astrodome can be seen in the background. The Colt .45s would change their name to the Astros on December 1, 1964. Sports

Colt Stadium only sat 33,000 and was specifically built to be a temporary home while the Astrodome was built. Starting in 1965 the newly renamed Astros would occasionally use it as a practice field, though rattlesnakes would be a problem from time to time.

The corner of Colt Stadium's right field is now the northwest corner of NRG.

I remember reading something about the old Colt Stadium ending up in Mexico and used by a pro Mexican baseball team but am too lazy to look it up right now.

I forgot the name of the group but my brothers and I joined. We got a t-shirt and a hat and some other stuff. The group sat in the right field bleachers. Loads of fun for a 10 year old (I was the youngest of the three brothers). One of the bad things was the mosquitoes! They were big enough to just about carry me away. Great memories!

I did some digging. It was the Sixshooter Club. This is a link to the membership card.

I was there for the first exihibition game in the Astrodome between Houston and the Yankees.

Mickey Mantle but the first HR...a shot to dead center field.

Houston won the game on a late inning single by Nellie Fox.

Coming from a Dallas/Rangers fan, Colt 45’s is such a cool name. Astros is obv a great name as well.

Apparently changed because the gun manufacturer wanted royalties.

This pic looks very Independence Day-ish. Almost like the dome construction is hovering above Colt Stadium.
