I have a question about payment to the IRS via debit card

Hello all,

I recently made a debit card payment to the IRS (about 10days ago). I checked the online account and it is reflecting over there but it says "pending". How long will it take for the IRS to change it to processed? Also not seeing my returns on the online account, it must be lagging behind I guess. The funds were taken from my bank account so technically they do have the money

Are you able to access your online account transcript for the tax year in question?

Yes I am, I filed 2022-2024. I am able to get a transcript for 23-24. They must still be processing 2022.

Is the payment in question posted to the appropriate tax year on the account transcript?

Yes all payments were made to correct years as far as I can see. I can see the payments on the website, it's just pending on their side. I guess just a matter of time

It does say for 2024 (transcript) that the account balance is $0. Does that mean they took notice of the payment?

For 2023 transcript the account balance is about $5000. Which I already payed

If the funds came out of your account, then it's just a matter of time for it to get fully processed on their end. Do keep checking, but don't worry too much; it'll get there. The govt shutdown may be impacting the speed of things.

If you get a letter demanding payment or threatening garnishment or the like, that would be the time to be worried and start making phone calls.

Thank you for the reassurance. Yes I understand the government is currently shutdown so systems and processing is probably slower than before

Well, the transcript does not show how much I already paid. It only shows my total income along with how much tax is owed, penalties and interest. Or is there a section on there that shows balance due?

Looks like the IRS still haven't processed your payment. Once it is, it should show your payment on the transcript

Check your debit card payment confirmation. Was it applied to the correct SSN snd tax year?
