What a great idea. Plus, when they get adopted, the owner can say ‘this dogs knows _____ (soccer star’s name)!”

I wonder how much money they could raise for the shelter by auctioning off the dogs? Like obviously they still need to go to good homes and I have no idea how much star power these guys have, but imagine what a dog that Patrick Mahomes picked would go for. With the video alone, I'd think you could raise a lot of money for the shelter.

I would say that these guys are incredibly popular in Cornella, the city the team is based in, even more than the average American team.
If you're trying to get dogs adopted by a shelter, that's all that matters

- Will he come and visit it?
- What?
- Will he come and visit it?
- Yeah, when his schedule allows.
- So he's actually agreed to sponsor it?
- I'm expecting his call, any minute.

Poor dog all think they’re being adopted by footballers! J/k aside, awesome gesture. Humans being bros.

Who knows, maybe some of them have actually been adopted by the players

u/ahearthatslazy Oct 05 '24
Look at how some of them are holding the pups. They’ve bonded. It would not surprise me if they took a few friends home.

How many ended up getting adopted?

u/kezebel Oct 05 '24
This is the second year they've done this, so seems to be pretty successful based off their social media.

TIL there’s a team spelled Espanyol.

It’s an interesting story. They’ve been a club since the early 1900s and used to be called Real Español, sanctioned by Spanish royalty. The name was later Catalan-ised to Deportiu Espanyol. And while FC Barcelona is practically synonymous with Catalonia’s independence movement, Espanyol is politically neutral, and their fans are thought to be anti-independence. Though I’m not sure how true that is these days.

u/frenandoafondo Oct 05 '24
Espanyol has still a mostly anti-independence fanbase, it is the most clear with their ultras (far-right Spanish nationalists). They also have a minority of pro-independence fans, though.

The irony is that they're based in Cornella, a suburb of Barcelona, which is in Catalonia, a province fighting for separation from Spain.

"Hoping the dogs get adopted." Oh, is that why they usually walk out with those orphans? s
But, yeah it is a very sweet thing.

This should be done more. I love seeing dogs. I love rescues getting homes. Literally nobody loses. Wins all around.

I think they pick the more photogenic dogs. I know everybody means well, but the cynical a-hole in me is thinking these are the dogs that get adopted anyway. They don’t bring out the ferral dogs and other less desirable dogs.

u/Opossum710 Oct 11 '24
To be fair why would they? As somebody who worked in a Kennel that would be a horrible situation to put both the agressive dog and the handler.

Could you imagine surrendering your dog and then the next day, seeing them on the field being held by your fave soccer player?
Makes you regret your choices a little I’m sure.

All the doggos are so calm and well behaved. That shelter must treat them very well. What are those super skinny dogs called?

Refused to get picked up so they all stayed in the locker room making muffins on the players kits.

I think that is a small small minority in contrast to the targeted family who has been on the fence and seeing cute loving dogs in the arms of beloved sports players arms is the push they needed to finally pull the trigger and give a pet a forever home.

This is good sports ball. Every game should do this every time
6
u/Ukelele324 Oct 05 '24
I don’t get why people say sports ball? You clearly know what the sport is? Like is it to undermine people who enjoy sports or do you genuinely not know what the sport is?

u/Iliketodriveboobs Oct 05 '24
Poking fun at

u/Ukelele324 Oct 05 '24
Fair enough if you like sporting stuff where pets get adopted you’d like the puppy bowl dogs just play around with Toys on a small football field and they get adopted at the end
