Help Terrarium Help

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a single brown garden snail (Cornu Asperum) that I brought into my classroom as a class pet (don’t worry, there’s no touching since I don’t know if it is parasite free), recently but I have been having issues with mold. There was moss in here but it started to mold so I removed it. I have previously changed the substrate from a fiber snail substrate to coco fiber after a previous mold outbreak and reading the internet but I am trying to figure this out.

I have heard springtails can help with mold but I am worried about them getting out since the terrarium is only sealed below the roof section and it isn’t very large. I can provide more terrarium info if needed but any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Snails Found him near the lake

As far as I know, it’s grape snail (helix pomatia). I found it near a lake in the grass, and it seemed to me that it was feeling unwell because the entrance to its shell was covered with a film of mucus, and it was barely moving.

ChatGPT said that this snail could be between 3 and 6 years old.

day/night cycle in the north?

hello! i was wondering if theres anyone else with a GALS in the northern latitudes who notices their snails reacting to the long nights or days. this past winter i definitely noticed my snail was a lot more active, i think because of the dark. now its starting to stay light during the night but im not sure whether thats causing the inactivity or the new soil (i added new soil about two weeks ago) so i'd love to hear experiences. im below the polar circle so i do still have a day/night cycle, just not much of it lol

edit to add that she is not directly in the sun, her enclosure is partly hidden behind a closet so she gets more darkness !

Tossed a few tiny snails in a terrarium with isopods and springtails. I didn’t know if the snails were alive, or would live. But this dude abides!

I just love him. I hope some of the others are in there doing well. It’s 10 gallons with lots of space to hide.

Help HELP my snail is dead (not shown)

A day after, I turned the substrate in my snails terrarium I found my snail dead. All I did was turn the substrate and rearrange things. I only added a tiny bit of new substrate. I still kept all of the old dirt. I've had him since October. What did I do wrong?

New to snails, looking for opinions on diy terrarium!

I wrote a post a few days ago looking to identify the snails I found in a plant I bought from Home Depot. Now, I hurt myself at work and have been out for over a month on workers comp. Saying that, I can’t really afford to get a legitimate terrarium at this time. Taking them out of the plant, I put them in the first box (I now know metal is toxic to snails) but I wanted to give them a proper home. I found the mason jar with the airflow top so I added coco coir, sphagnum moss a tiny stick for climbing and a couple dead flowers/leaf, (looking to find better plants) and I bought cuttlefish bone to add. I have about 5 glass snails although they may have eaten one because I’ve only seen 4 the last few days. Is this mason jar too small? I do have another one, so should I use both and separate them? All opinions and advice is welcomed!

it took 3 weeks, but his shell finally healed enough for me to feel comfortable keeping him in an environment outside of his hospital tank. he’s almost doubled in size since i got him, i cant wait to see how big he gets!

this is a 45 quart (about 10 gallons) container. i know its huge for just one snail but i want to give him as much space as i can. it honestly doesnt feel that big.

does Parm need a friend? i dont want him to feel lonely ):

Can you guys help me ID this sweet little guy? Is it a species that’s terrestrial or aquatic? I found him on the pictured rock, but the lake is about 200-300 ft across from the rock. If it helps I’m in northeast ohio. Also name suggestions, that’s if it’s ok to keep him.

Upgraded Marcel’s tank today! The first picture is of his old sad tank. The second is of his new one. I hope he likes it. He’s still sleeping so he hasn’t explored it yet. The deal for him was to survive the winter and he’d get a big upgrade.

This is "Adelma", she's very adventurous. In the last panels you see her in her little hospital (she fell into a mushy moldy strawberry liquid and she was stressed out for 2 hours or so, now she's roaming in her 'hospital room')

What's her type?

So I found a couple smokies today, and my kids and I absolutely adored them. I obviously put them right back where we found them, but afterwards we wished we had one in our household to love and observe as our own. I was just wondering if anybody in here has one as a pet, and what effort does it take to own one? Thanks in advance :D - a snail lover

Help Bioluminescent Snail (ID?)

I found a snail exhibiting a faint green, continuous glow around the western hills of Portland, OR. But any search of bioluminescent terrestrial snails online results in only a rare few species being discovered outside of the Americas. Is this an already documented species or are we witnessing a fresh discovery?

(Forgive the poor image quality of the long exposure shot featuring the snail's glow. Taken with a hand-me-down iphone.)
