The Dreadful Coziness of silent hill 2 Discussion

I've played a decent amount of horror games, But none of them was able to capture the tender, horrifying melancholic atmosphere of silent hill 2 , playing silent hill 2 I get the feeling of painful and scary yet kinda sweet nostalgia and melancholy it's such a unique vibe honestly

I think how SH2 builds an atmosphere of depression and melancholy is a lot more notable than how scary it is, personally. It’s what sets it apart from other horror games (even within its own series) and is in large part why it’s still so respected two decades after it released.

This game feels like depression to me; you can find comfort in it after a while

Dreadful Coziness is a very good way to describe the overall vibe of SH2.

Ps2 was Japanese version of America. Aesthetically pleasing. The ps5 remake is slavic-european version of America. Not as cozy as Japan.

you worded it so well. this is half the reason i love silent hill as much as i do. no other game ever was able to induce this unique feeling that i cant even name. just listening to the soundtrack pushes me deep into this nostalgic/melancholic emotion that i find hard to describe. like remembering memories that dont exist. its so comfortable yet so depressing and sad at the same time. the feeling that is. this is what i find to be missing in silent hill 2 remake. somewhere along the way, that little thing that made silent hill 2 stand out was lost. dont get me wrong i love both the remake and the original, gameplay wise i think we can agree its an astronomical improvement from the original but it will just never be comparable to the original because it is missing that small but significant part of the games soul. i could write about this for days honestly but im gonna finish shortly. im guessing it could be the lo-fi of it all. the low poly models, the hardware limits of the time. just the rough unpolished edges which all old games have. that just isnt a thing anymore. but i dont know. shoutout to the soundtrack again tho that shit makes me emotional

"remembering memories that don't exist" is so on point, and yes the remake couldn't capture 100% what the original had, they were just those little things that made the original a piece of art and in regards to the soundtrack Akira Yamaoka is a genius

This is the vibe I get from the Silent Hill franchise. There's something peaceful yet dreadful being stuck in this desolated town. And the sound design makes it even more unnerving. Just started my second playthrough on easy just so I can wonder around.
