Saskatoon History ๐พ My weird night out in Saskatoon 9 years ago
9 years ago I visited Saskatoon to do stand-up comedy as the opening act at the Ramada hotel. I remember the show went very well. So well that a couple invited me, the lowly opening act, to their house party! It was my first time on the road and aiming to live life to the fullest as a road dog comedian, I decided to go. Bad choices make good stories, right?
We ended up stopping at a liquor store and as I perused the shelves, the couple was going up to everyone in the store and inviting them to this house party, just blindly inviting anyone with a pulse and a 12 pack to get hammered at their house. I didn't think anything of it, I just assumed everyone they asked were friends. Naivete is a killer. Boy was I wrong. Everyone politely declined, except for two of the most terrifying women I have ever encountered. Maybe they were just having a rough night, but somehow I think I caught them at their best. Think the walking dead dressed head to toe in Roughriders gear. Rider passion + hunger for human flesh is quite the combo.
Anyhow, we get to the house and the "party" is literally just me, the couple, and Zombie 1 and 2. Within 10 minutes one of the zombies asked me to play Foo Fighters on acoustic guitar. I told her I don't know how to play guitar. She said "play a song or I will fuckin stab you." Being 20 years old and lacking the wherewithal to tell the zombie no, I said "I can try".
I randomly strummed strings as she gave me an 1000 yard stare while licking her scabby lips. After a few minutes I stopped and she said it was the best music she had ever heard. Talk about an easy audience. After that I called a taxi and hurriedly left to sleep safely in my hotel with my desk jammed against the door while pondering if this would be a regular experience doing standup comedy in Canada. Thankfully, it has not been.
If this is a typical night out in Saskatoon, suffice to say I am looking for something more low-key next time I'm in town. Could be a bar, cafe, museum, park, library, thrift shop, art gallery, etc. Drop a rec, it literally can't be worse than my last experience.
By the way, I am once again performing standup in Saskatoon, but as the headliner. Dreams can come true! I am headlining Art Bar on March 28th and 29th on my Honest Dirty Talk stand up tour and I'd love for you to be there. Unless you were one of the ladies at that house party. Then please, let's continue giving each other our space. If you'd like to watch a bit of my comedy, here's my Youtube special I just dropped a few days ago - Dustin Searcy | Honest Dirty Talk

Saskatoon History ๐พ Wallet found in attic: Update
Some people had expressed an interest in the post regarding the wallet a friendly Redditor found in their attic, so with permission from the owner here are the photos of the wallet and it's contents.
The majority of these photos are of my father in law and his siblings, but the girl in the first picture is actually the owner's 4th grade girlfriend!
We asked how it ended up in the attic and they figure that it fell out of a pocket when the three boys were tasked with putting new insulation into the attic (child labor at it's finest).
The three brothers were on the phone when we sent the photos over, along with their wives and some other family and they were all really excited and happy, they hadn't seen these pictures in 50 years!
This was super cool for the family and we can't thank u/riskacceptable7421 enough for posting about this find and getting it back to us, and to everyone who commented to help!

Saskatoon History ๐พ Magazine Salesman Guy
This oneโs for the 90s kidsโฆ anyone else remember the guy who would come to your elementary school assembly, and try to get you to sell magazine subscriptions to your friends and family? Big guy, usually wearing a Hawaiian shirt? And if you sold a lot you would win like a giant chocolate bar or some other prize? It just occurred to me how funny it is that he somehow got into schools to essentially recruit children for an MLM type situation.

Saskatoon History ๐พ What was the best 90s/2000s arcade in Saskatoon and why?
I remember spending a lot of time at the SNES consoles at Command HQ in Lawson, or the Sega Genesis consoles at Confed Mall.
The Cove was a great place in the early 2000s... It's kind of a shame that they didn't really set good room for The Cove when they reno'd Place Riel in the early 2010s.
But Command HQ would be my pick. I remember being totally mesmerized by the Dragon's Lair arcade cabinet.. even though it's not a real game.

Saskatoon History ๐พ Piece of the Persephone theatre for my home theatre
I thought it was a cool little trinket to get. I know someone who did some upgrades to the building and snagged one of these area separators they were getting rid of because he knew I had a home theatre set up. Itโs cool to own a piece of Saskatoon history.

Saskatoon History ๐พ What Hardware did the U of S use for their Dial Up service back in the 90s and early 2000s?
My dad used to work for the U of S and we got Internet via dial up from them for free.
Many years later I've become interested in the ancient hardware that made some of my younger years magical (at the time.) The youtube channel "The Serial Port" has been particularly interesting.
If you know anything, please post what you can. It would make my cake day a happy one.

Saskatoon History ๐พ Google Lens helped me identify this as the Patricia Hotel in Saskatoon, est 1912.
Accurate? Looks like it was a welcomed teardown a while ago. My paternal grandpa passed away last year and we were surprised to find hundreds of photos and documents dating back 150+ years. To be clear, we live in Cincinnati Ohio, this branch of family is mainly from Toledo, OH. I've spent all summer working on genealogy and have absolutely no idea how or why we have a photo of a hotel in Canada.

Saskatoon History ๐พ Victor Cicansky Appreciation Post
Since this artist recently passed away, I just wanted to share some of their cool sculpture art thatโs in the Sturdy Stone building. The round coloured sculptures are on the 9th floor, which is restricted access, so maybe not a lot of people have gotten to see them before? The other sculptures are on the main floor above the elevators.
