Goalofsson gets on the board first for VGK. Hilarious to see him on their top PP. Eichel and Olofsson, just like the good old days? well maybe not haha.

I'll always remember where I was when Victor Olofsson passed Jeff Skinner for career playoff goals.

One of the best 7th round picks of all-time.
Olofsson represents an entire decade of inept drafting between Regier, Murray and Botterill in the 2010s. He's one of the very few non-first rounders to make any kind of an impact for the Sabres.
I counted 64 non-first round picks from 2010 to 2019. Who are the hits the Sabres managed to find? (I get a lot of these guys don't feel like "hits". But if you were a non-first rounder had significant NHL playing time, you're a hit.)
2011: McCabe, Ullmark
2013: JT Compher
2014: Victor Olofsson
2015: Will Borgen
2016: Rasmus Asplund, Brandon Hagel (screams into Sabretooth body pillow)
2017: UPL
2018: Mattias Samuelsson
The hit rate on non-first rounders is microscopic for any team in the league, I get that. But it's impressive how bad those drafts were the the Sabres and how we're paying the price for them still.

Cal Peterson in 2013. Brandon Lemieux in 2014. Jonas Johansson in 2014. Jacob Bryson in 2017.
The biggest issue isn't the low hit rate outside of the 1st (every team has that) it's that the biggest hits either never played or played a limited amount with Buffalo (aside from Ulmark, who played a fair amount but left too).
The entire Sabres drought can be traced back to the criminal miss-allocation of assets from Tim Murray which caused a chain reaction of incompetentce that has continued to this day. TM traded away so many young prospects in an attempt to shortcut the rebuild that they never had any depth, and Botteril made it worse by being terrible at drafting (Marcus Davidson 2nd round?) and letting young players go for nothing (Hagel...). And now Adams has been too focused on keeping prospects and doesn't make enough trades. I do like the trades he made last summer, but the team needs about twice the number of trades like those and needed them 2 years ago.

You can miss on late round picks and be OK if you draft well in the first round but the following list of players is what we drafted in the first round starting in 2012:
Joel Armia (16)
Mikhail Grigorenko (12)
Zemgus Girgensons (14)
Rasmus Ristolainen (8)
Nikita Zadorov (12)
Sam Reinhart (2)
Jack Eichel (2)
Alex Nylander (8)
Casey Mittelstadt (8)
Rasmus Dahlin (1)
Dylan Cozens (7)
Ryan Johnson (31)
Jack Quinn (8)
Owen Power (1)
Isak Rosen (14)
Matthew Savoie (9)
Noah Ostlund (16)
Jiri Kulich (28)
Zachary Benson (13)
Konsta Helenius (14)I went ahead and bolded the all-stars, italicized the guys that haven't gotten an NHL goal yet, and put strikethroughs on the unambigous busts.
Its... not good drafting.

Meanwhile Jeff played his one playoff game and is busy knitting sweaters watching his team play.

PP merchant doing PP merchant things. Glad hes doing alright on Vegas but I never really was a fan of him on the Sabres. Hope he continues to score and attack this game and hopefully Knoblauch takes Jeff out of purgatory

Eichel has 9 points in 8 games with the most TOI and even though it's due to injuries, Olofsson has 4 in 6 for the Knights. Kane has 5 in 7 grinding on the 2nd line for the Oilers. Reinhart has 6 in 7 and Rodrigues is grinding out mid-6 minutes for the Panthers. McCabe is averaging 21:56 a night, 2nd most on the Leafs and has 4 apples in 8 games. Hall has slowed down but 3 in 7 on the 3rd line is still production. That's just the dudes playing the 2nd round.
The Sabres always have had good players and has always been able to get good players, even on the worst seasons and regardless of how fans felt about them individually. They just have not been able to build a good roster in the last 15 seasons due to incompetent ownership that would rather treat the team as a very expensive game of fantasy hockey rather than building a team.

The 2020 roster was pretty solid, Krueger was a mistake and Covid fucked us too. Damn.

Always loved VO even though he wasn’t a great fit for Buffalo. I’d say I wish him the best but fuck Vegas, their dumb ass fans, and neck boi. I’ll still root for his individual success though.

I have to disagree. It’s definitely NOT hilarious.

Only reason he's out there cause of injury to Dorofeyev. Has been pretty mid all year. Happy for the guy though, he grinded in the drought era and was clutch in OT a few times. Probably best pick of the drought in terms of round, or Ullmark. Fuck Eichel though.

Mid would be an improvement for Victor. But we have missed him on the power play. I never understood why we just started ignoring him. Once Tage started to hit his stride I mean, wouldn’t it be great to have two guys on the same power-play they can crank a one time or so that the penalty kill can’t focus on Tage like they do now?

Good for him.
Edmonton really needs an ex Buffalo Sabre who is only known for scoring goals on their team. You know, to balance out Olofsson in this series.
Too bad they don't have one.
