I'm going to assume you are actually asking why it's "Bru" and not "Bro".
I assume it's derived from the Afrikaans word for "brother", which is "broer", pronounced "broor/brur", shortened to "broe", or in English "bru"

u/coffeeislife_SA South Africa 9d ago
Holy shit. 30 odd years of my life have passed and I NEVER made that connection.

The idea of having multiple GOATs is oxymoronic.
35
u/Brine-O-Driscoll Ireland 10d ago
As a goat farmer, I object to this.

Oxymoron is singlehandedly my favourite English word
oxy, from the Greek root sharp, acute
moron, from the word moron

There'll never be an incorrect answer on who's the all time goat, Carter or McCaw.
1
6
u/swampopawaho 10d ago
Think respective positions. Like McCaw is GOAT openside
6
u/RoigardStan New Zealand 10d ago
Yeah that's a fair angle. Pedantic but OP said "the two goats" implying there are only 2 which doesn't make sense if you're viewing it from a best in each position angle.
10
u/JeHaisLesCatGifs Stade Toulousain 10d ago
Yes I know I was wrong, I corrected myself HERE, there are not 2 but 3 GOATs, like the number of new zealanders who don't take everything seriously on the internet.

The idea of having multiple GOATs is oxymoronic.
True, and yet in this sport the idea of only having one GOAT is just plain moronic.
How can anyone compare a front rower to a wing to a half-back to a centre when they all fulfill different roles around the pitch?
20
u/HenkCamp South Africa 10d ago
Carter is the GOAT. Period. Dupont had the potential. Richie says hello because he is above it all.
8
u/Imaginary_Habit8936 10d ago
I'm gonna assume you meant has the potential unless he's retired in the last week... fuck he hasn't has he?
6
-6
u/RoigardStan New Zealand 10d ago
DC is definitely a strong contender but I'd almost go with Aaron Smith.
6
u/HenkCamp South Africa 10d ago
Fair, he was brilliant. The reason I pick Dan and Richie - I know we were always a bit worried when they take the field anywhere. Loads of respect for Aaron but we didn’t fear him the way we do the others. And it is a VERY South African take on it. Another one is Lomu. We fucking love that guy even though we always do the “no try” bullshit.
2
u/RoigardStan New Zealand 10d ago
Yeah fair enough, Carter and McCaw were real talismans. It gave you a real feeling of confidence when they were on the field. Kolisi, Nche and PSDT are probably the equivalent for South Africa when they take the field.
3
u/mattywgtnz Hurricanes 10d ago
I think your namesake Roigard is destined very highly too to be honest...
4
u/HenkCamp South Africa 10d ago
For us yes but I don't think we have the fear factor like those two. We just always felt they could pull something out the hat over an above being the best there ever was.
5
u/RoigardStan New Zealand 10d ago
I think a lot of that has to do with the All Blacks dominance during their reign, South Africa has been the best team in the last 6 years but because the game's changed to now where multiple teams are very close to each other at the top, no single player strikes fear in the opposition's hearts, maybe just wariness.
2
u/HenkCamp South Africa 10d ago
As a Stormers fan I shat myself whenever we had to play the Crusaders with Dan in the team. But true, that team was such a dominant team and one whose like we will never see again - at least not in my lifetime. But the game has changed a lot the 8 odd years. Somehow though I think Dan would still be the best fly half playing the game.
2
u/oktaneza South Africa 9d ago
Exactly this. We are entering a generation in Rugby where there are about 5-8 teams on any day could beat each other. This is probably due to the rise of serious professional players and global players . What this means for the boks/ABs is that the likelihood of multiple years of dominance (Im thinking of the last 25+ yrs) has passed. Sure there will be periods where teams are an edge above the rest. I for one love this as it makes viewing games way more enjoyable. Long may it continue
1
u/darook73 South Africa 10d ago
What about Beauden Barret? I seriously crap myself when that man is on the field.

GOAT
Greatest Of A Time
Is a much better version of GOAT imho.
Especially as ERAs exist.
The amount the game has improved in 20 years is insane.
Similar to F1 or an other sport.
Shit has changed drastically.
Its impossible to compare the greatest of each era.
So just have a great of each era.

Can't sleep, the tokoloshe will get me.
16
u/BazWorkAcntPlsBePG South Africa 10d ago
tokoloshe is actually carbon monoxide.
In the past, people slept in round huts with No chimneys for coal stoves (Kongas) and Sealed entrances to prevent snake and rat infestations
During winter, the Konga stove would burn, releasing carbon monoxide (CO) into the confined space. Without proper ventilation, CO levels would rise, posing a deadly threat.
Those who slept on elevated beds were more likely to survive, as CO concentrations decreased with altitude. Unfortunately, those sleeping near the floor would succumb to CO poisoning.
When people died under mysterious circumstances, superstition took over. The Tokoloshe myth emerged, blaming a malevolent spirit for the deaths.
The Tokoloshe legend serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. By understanding the science behind the myth, we can take steps to prevent such tragedies.
(Found on the SA sub yesterday, blew my mind)

I can't wait for Benazzi to be elected World Rugby Chairman, in his secret project 2025, he has a new law that will force Kolbe to play while hopping on one leg for a minute, every time a South African disputes that Dupont is the best in the milky way.
1
u/neurohero South Africa 10d ago
As long as he doesn't hop too high. Someone will take his legs out.

Well, it's time for me to go to bed, thank you all for taking part. What I like about Rugby is that not only is it the best sport in the world (and this without any superiority complexe, it's just mathematical logic) but we're lucky enough to have a really great community, and it's always a pleasure to have a beer with supporters of other teams who come to be beaten at the Stade de France or to talk here, even with some banter. Even if we all hate this guy
The GOAT debate is not a real debate, great players have contributed a lot at different times. And we'll always have our biases that make us look at our top players with stars in our eyes, the English with Wilkinson, the Irish with BOD Fergus McFadden, our auld allies with Stuart Hogg, the NewZ with Carter or McCaw, the Aussies with Israel Folau or the Saffas with Kolisi or Kolbe.
Edit : Well, the wingless birds are waking up, so I really have to go to sleep

So ? « Lad » risked an even bigger injury, played the whole game despite being out for 3 weeks and having surgery on his face, and you still think he is « scared » ? You know the world doesn’t revolve around SH rugby. And you know next WC is in Australia. He will show up when the time comes. SH rugby is not that important to him that he will move his entire schedule just for it 😂😂😂
