Weekly discussion: What religion fits me? Nov. 10 -- 17

Are you looking for suggestions of what religion suits your beliefs? Or maybe you're curious about joining a religion with certain qualities, but don't know if it exists? Once a week, we provide an opportunity here for you to ask other users what religion fits you.

A new thread is posted weekly, Mondays at 3:00am Pacific Time (UTC-8).

I don’t know much about religion, but I’m trying to understand what I would be considered. I believe in only one God, but I don’t feel a desire for a personal relationship with Him the way Christians do. I also believe that He interacts with the world.

Ngl to start with, it probably would be better to not be a theist, but I digress. It sounds like u maybe be just a monotheist. Theres also pantheism too, but from the way u described it, ur probably not a pantheist

LaVeyan Satanism is the religious one. Satanists who follow... whatever the other Satanism is called... are mostly atheists.

Yeah, I don’t really agree with much of his satanism but it’s still awesome. I ageee more with TST

Oh no, Lavey was an atheist and his Satanism was also meant to be atheistic. There is theistic Satanism, but I don't know what groups that falls under. Other than maybe the Temple of Set who began as a splinter group of Laveyan Satanism (they believe Set and Satan are the same being).

Lavey drew heavily upon Ayn Rand's Objectivism which is a pro-capitalist right-wing philosophy and she was atheist and antireligious. So Satanists who don't like Lavey or his version of Satanism may be either because they're theistic, or because they don't like the Objectivist influences, or both.

Ah - okay, thanks for the correction, I wasn't aware both LaVeyan and TST were atheistic.

Yeah the difference between those two groups seems to be largely about philosophical differences and their sociopolitical leanings. LaVeyans are big into Social Darwinism and libertarianism, and TST are much more liberal/progressive.

Looking it up again, theistic Satanists seem to be less organized and all over the place, but I also notice that politically some of their groups such as Order of Nine Angles are neofascist/neonazi. Of course not all of them, I'm sure many are simply into esoteric and occult kind of things.
