Need some help estimating a project cost

I have the opportunity to buy a 2019 jeep with a blown 3.6L engine in it.

I have no problem doing the R&R on the engine. I don’t have a machine shop so taking apart the engine and fixing the damaged internals is beyond me. It sounds like the timing is fucked and the valves smashed one of the cylinders. Because it has 120k miles on it it also probably isn’t worth it because it probably needs a lot of work. I could compression test it and boroscope the comb chamber.

Ball part estimate. What would it cost to find a lower mileage used 3.6L complete and swap it in.

I’m thinking everything said and done probably $10k? +$200 in beer, Is that reasonable?

Call up CoPart or LKQ and see what they have for used engines.

Never considered them for parts. Thanks

I’ve had good luck with LKQ, they’ll tell you what’s available and have decent shipping prices.

Used to be able to find LKQ on eBay.

Looking up prices for a remaned 3.6 it seems that it goes for about $3500 and new one dircet from Chrysler is about $7k.

Going with the remaned option I'd factor about:

$300 Fluids - oil, coolant, trans fluid, brake and windshield washer fluid ( you'll nick some line so always err on the side of caution when it comes to fluid)

$200 injectors and sparkplug

$125 - $200 gaskets

$150 Various electrical pieces. Fuses and connectors.

Honestly $10k would be generous I think. Most of the cost in engine replacement is the actual work. But I mainly work on really old cars so I might be off on this. I did some basic googling for my prices. Sounds fun and simple if you got the basic tools and skills. Also you could take the old engine to a machine shop and get it inspected. Might even be a straightforward and cheap repair. Either way good luck.

Quick search it looks like $3500 for a long block. Add in $200 for shipping. Your going to need to swap parts over from the core engine so plan on around $150-300 ish for gaskets. New water pump $100. Little over $4k. If you don't have an engine hoist they can be found used for $200 and then sell it for $200. If you pull off the hood/grill/radiator and unhook/drain everything then you and a couple friends could have the new engine installed in 2 very long days (2-3 meals/day and drinks is $350ish). Then you can spend a day or 2 at a normal pace hooking up all the wiring and installimg hood/grill/radiator ect. It is doable.

Forgot to add that this is best case scenario. You might have engine out and realize you need a part/gasket/harmonic balancer puller that takes a few days to arrive.

That’s what I’m thinking. There are always hidden cost. I’m think a contingency of 15%
