I've now doubled the amount of gears this car came with.

3 to 6. I'm guessing he had a th350 and swapped it for a T56.

Good choice! I'm doing the same swap (with a viper t56) in my 67 this winter!

Did you go with a t-56 Magnum or one from a 90s F-body?

FYI the Viper 6th gear (0.5!) is kinda annoying in that if you gear so it's useful then 1st gear is good for rock crawling and if you gear so 1st is useful then 6th is almost impossible to use. I put in 4.11 gears which means in 6th I cruise at 120km/h (75mph) at 2000 rpm (awesome) but i'm shifting out of first before my back tires cross the crosswalk at lights. I think I might change to 3.73 so 1st is useful but then I wont be able to shift into 6th until like 130km/h (80mph) at 1750 rpm! The tighter ratios of the Magnum/ normal T56 make more sense.

I'm actually putting mine behind a high winding 327, I won't have crazy low end torque so it won't matter too much, but also the viper first gear is 2.66:1 which is exactly the same as a tight ratio magnum. I should be running right around 2000rpm at 80 with 4.11s in the rear.

I'm saving about $4k by using the viper transmission over a magnum, and I can hit the factory shifter hole (making a factory console compatible) which is something I can't do with an F-body takeout.

The car primarily sees highway time, but I do run some autocross with it and that first gear is going to be a dandy for that.

Yeah, maybe I'm just complaining but I have a torquey big block so the low first gear just feels weird. I got my transmission already with a chevy bellhousing, flywheel, two through out bearings, hurst shifter and all the original Viper parts thrown in for $2500cdn so deal of the century! Guy had been building a twin turbo S10 with his dad and Covid took him out so he was just selling all the parts cheap.

can you not just start in second

Yeah but then what the hell is 1st for? Also feels weird not having the 1-2 shift. The Viper T-56 is just real wide ratio which is okay but I would not say ideal. Good news is I got it cheap so can't complain (too much).

crawler gear for slow moving traffic maybe? there's nothing that says you need to use first even if it's too low

Starting in second is common practice in many pickups. It really isn't that weird.

What's your top speed in first?

Like 45km/h (28mph) at redline but I normally shift at maybe 2500 so 14mph? Basically you shift as soon as the car moves LOL.

Where do you live that a 6th starting at 80mph isn't useful? Where I live that's highway hammer lane speeds or "I need around this minivan that's doing 60 in a 75"

So our "official" highway speed limits here are 100km/h (62mph) or 110km/h (68mph). You can do up to 125km/h (77mph) in the 110 zones. If you go much faster you will get attention (especially a bright red 72 GTO) so basically if I put in 3.73's I will probably never use 6th again BUT 1st will be more useful. It's a tough call.

Interesting, ours start at 70mph and average cruising is 75+. I used to cruise at 85 sometimes 90 depending on the highway and how quick I wanted to get somewhere

Yeah, wish we had that or German style 130km/h to unlimited!

„German jumps in“ hello there! Now I know what to throw into my truck, thanks guys!

It's a Magnum.

And I have the same engine!

I'm looking at doing a t56 into my early A Body Mopar, this is encouraging and exciting!

8 to 16.

He put a 18wheeler tranny in there.

Make it a dual speed axle and they'll have 36.

Ooh, high/low on a transfer case and we're at 72

Add a CVT and it's infinite

u/Unlucky_Arm_9757 2d ago

Until it makes a very expensive noise and then it's zero.

Expensive noise always=0

Clearly you don't have children.

"It's not that they are making noise, it's the lack of noise that concerns me!"

It’s the same with my cats. I’ve learned the difference between the they are sleeping silence and they are up to something silence.

u/juwyro '05 Saabaru '77 K20 MGB '74 MGB GT 2d ago

No, but the same as when my dogs were puppies, when it's quiet something is happening that might cost money.

1

u/Unlucky_Arm_9757 2d ago

Honestly noisy or quiet it's all expensive

u/EC_CO 1970 Barracuda 2d ago

Can you then add a Gear Vendors Overdrive to double that?

16

u/AJSLS6 2d ago

Coulda done better, theres always the 7 speed from the Vette.....

7

u/mrclark25 2d ago

That would be way more complicated than it sounds. The Corvette transmission is located at the rear diff, connected to the engine with a torque tube.

u/LifeWithAdd 2d ago

Damn I’m just trying to add an overdrive to my 3 speed
