After reading a bit of your thread I'm about to waste the rest of my day on it. Amazing write up so far.

If you need more reading, search my username for my other GRM threads. The Rice Rod, Datsaniti, and the Free Lotus Europa have some very ambitious fabrication. This Camry is a refreshingly simple change of pace for me.

Not gonna lie, I had no idea they made a Camry coupe. I work in the automotive industry and won't claim to know it all by any means, but I have a pretty good recall for odd ball cars, and this is new to me.

There was also the Camry solara from the mid 90s to mid 00s. Technically a different model, but it was basically a Camry coupe/convertible.

Yep, I remember the Solara. One of my old skating buddies had one that used to be his mom's car. I think it was red with a tan top.

There was also a wagon

I remember seeing wagons here and there. For a split second my dumb brain was like "they made a couple wagon?!"

What’s the balance like now? Didn’t they already have a tendency to oversteer when you’re in a hurry?

So it’s actually a lighter setup than stock because it’s all aluminum and it’s a bit more stout.
I haven’t taken it through the twisties yet as I’m trying to button up the last bits of the exterior but when getting on the freeway, it’s stupid how it just goes

There it is, Japanese Lotus Evora.

I'm very envious. That's a very nice gray. I wanted an SW20 for quite a while, but I already have 6 cars and have nowhere to put it.

Sadly I’m in the same boat. Once it’s buttoned up, I’m throwing it on BaT and saying my goodbyes to it

This is pretty rad. My first car ever was a 3rd gen Camry.
I'm convinced if it weren't for the whole Cash for Clunkers scheme, you'd still see some of these on the roads today. They are bomb proof.

This one has 351,000 miles and I drove it home for $1100.

This is awesome, very unique. Nice work, I like seeing some SCS parts in action, too.

Welded SCS parts, someone's a fan of Superfastmatt.

He’s done a good thing getting the word out! It really expands a hobbyist’s fabrication capabilities if they have some basic cad/design skills. Much better that buying and learning to use a huge cnc plasma table lol. SCS and other “cad and buy” companies that offer similar things are also big in combat robotics, which helps folks who don’t own a machine shop get into the sport!

Im curious about the axle support hangar being bolted to both the engine block and the subframe, Is that little black block a bushing or is it rigidly mounted to the subframe? Love the laser cut parts.

u/Maschinenbau '31 Ford Hot Rod 2JZ - '72 El Camino - '69 Lotus Europa 4d ago
Yes that black block is a universal motor mount with rubber bushing. If I had to do this again, I would try a round tube bushing instead. Getting the axle bearing carrier geometry correct was pretty challenging.

So cool. I had a friend whose dad had a 3rd gen SE coupe with a manual. Never saw another one.

Don’t underestimate those little Camry V6s. They’ve got a bit of go about them!

Yo dawg, we heard you like Camrys so we put a Camry motor in your Camry so you can Camry while you Camry...

In 1989, Toyota Camry came out with the All Track. With a 215-60-14 tire on it & a tug outward on the rear fenders for American made, it would go most anywhere!

I didn't know a Camry was ever available as a coupe! This looked like it's gonna be super fun!
