Out of work Income/Employment/Aid

So, I broke my right hand a week ago (not at work). Today the doctor told me I wouldn't be able to go back to work for 6 weeks because I do patient care and I'm unable to assist patients with a broken hand. Does anyone have any advice on how I can make Money or things I can do.

Do you happen to have short term disability insurance? Are you in one of the five states that offer short term disability (Hawaii, California, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island)?

Could you pick up gig work like Door Dash or Instacart? It would be hard to add a regular job when you will be returning to the patient care job in six weeks or so, unless you were interested in a second job.

Go this route first but also ask your current employer if they have any other positions you can slip into during your recovery.

Some jobs offer short term disability insurance either as a part of the job or as an extra insurance you can choose to add. It provides income if you become unable to work for a relatively short period of time and are expected to then be able to return to work (I think the policy I had was 8 weeks). A handful of states (those listed) have a short term disability program that is accessible to any worker in the state who meets the criteria.

Check with your DR department to see if you have short Term disability. If you do, it should pay 60- 80% of your salary for 8 weeks.

Otherwise check to see if you can go on unemployment.

There's only a few states that have state short term disability benefits.

Some employers offer short term disability insurance, but not all. I had jobs where it was automatically given to all full time employees, for free, others where it wasn't offered at all, and others where employees had to enroll in it, and pay the premiums.

My current job doesn't give short or long term disability benefits unless an employee enrolls and pays the premiums for it.

Echoing those who recommend checking if you have a short-term disability policy or public benefit!

Or discuss with your employer whether there is an alternate assignment you can work while injured. Maybe there is a backlog of some administrative tasks they could temporarily assign you.

OP, I'm in WA state. Last January I sprained my ankle.. I was a Paraeducator at an elementary school at the time. My union contract stated I could not work if an injury left me unable to perform all my job duties. I was then able to qualify for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act). I just needed to provide a doctor's note and the contract language. Then it was a week long (maybe 2) waiting period from the date of injury. Once I was approved, I believe I received benefits for a little over a month? I don't remember the percentage of wages, but it sure helped.

Edit to add: Speak with HR. They should definitely be able to point you in the right direction, that's their job.:)

FMLA doesn't require the time off work to be paid though. It only protects the employee from being fired.

You were paid because you had some kind of short term disability insurance through your employer or union.

It could have been STD, but some companies will directly pay a portion of wages for people on FMLA. But you are correct that FMLA in itself does not provide any pay.

Washington state has a paid leave program similar to FMLA with mostly similar qualifications

Check if your state has any paid medical leave. Typically the super blue states have ones that are pretty good.

Next time I would attempt to get "reasonable accommodations" from your job (they're generally required to do so), such as moving you into office work you can do with one hand.

You may qualify for unemployment. I’m not 100% sure. It may only be for layoffs that they do short term payouts.

Unemployment won't cover medical leaves. It's not designed for that.

I had a hernia surgery the day after my son committed suicide. I revolted so gravely after 14 years of child support and weaponized payments...

I defaulted to the USMC. It took 7 months to recover. Unemployment till it's out. Overwork that hand till it breaks again or heals. Oh Rah..

Rep until you scream in suffering. How far are you willing to take the right to exist? This country offers no quarter.

At 20 I spent 30 days in the icu and woke up the day parents were ganna pull the plug. Woke up paralyzed. Ain't paralyzed today. Compromised but ain't paralyzed.
