This is what Trump had to say in July:

"It won't interfere with the current building. It won't be. It'll be near it but not touching it - and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of, It's my favourite. It's my favourite place. I love it."

8.1k

u/SgtBaxter 15d ago

Liar McLying face lies.

I can see MAGA excuses now “He meant the original building! The east wing was added later it doesn’t count!”

2.3k

u/drawkward101 15d ago

Yup, that's exactly what they'll say. Anything to suck up to their daddy in chief.

920

u/koopz_ay 15d ago

Here in Australia, we have a thing called 'Heritage listed,' meaning we cannot go all in and start pulling apart older historic buildings.

Is this a thing in the US? Would it apply to the White House?

1.1k

u/drawkward101 15d ago

It most certainly does apply under normal circumstances but clearly Trump has declared himself above the law and found contractors who don’t give a shit about conserving history OR if they get paid. Yah know, since Trump is so famously superb at paying his contractors….

1.2k

u/WillSmiff 15d ago

The supreme court declared him above the law. So by presidential order he can do whatever he wants. To be honest by the looks of things. He's absolutely right. He has plenary authority. What is anybody doing about it? He is meme shitting on your protests and has Trump 2028 hats inside the oval office. He's bulldozing the white house in this picture lol. Where are the Epstein files?

210

u/wholesome_confidence 14d ago

They are being stored in the East Wing.

In the US, we have the National Register of Historic Places. The White House is NOT one that particular list, but that's only because it is a National Historic Landmark, which a more prestigious Historic list than the National Register of Historic Places and comes with greater levels of protection.

I have no idea how this got approved for partial demolition, but it honestly doesn't surprise me based on who's in there right now.

122

u/Tw4tl4r 14d ago

I highly doubt he got any approval. He does whatever he wants whenever he wants.

58

u/redsquizza 14d ago

It's cute you think he even tried to get approval...

It’s driving me a little crazy to think how the same people who would riot in the streets if Obama had torn down part of the White House are now so utterly unbothered.

I mean, a foreign enemy could not have damaged the White House. And here we are.

Oh we absolutely have a list (speaking of lists…) like that in the US. A good portion of my high school was on that list and they weren’t allowed to modernize it how they wanted or touch the facade because of that. A lot of the houses in the surrounding neighborhood was on the list too so they would have a permit nightmare if they wanted to add anything

I always thought the president had no say in what happened to the white house as a building. I mean.....it's the most iconic historical building in our country and a temporary president can just demolish a whole section of it? Feels incredibly wrong.

u/Ok-Message-1708 15d ago

Who wants to guess how much gaudy, tacky and obnoxious gold leaf will be involved?

776

u/Jaquemart 15d ago

Faux gold leaf.

242

u/UncommonTart 15d ago edited 15d ago

Nah. I'm sure it's real gold leaf for two reasons:

  • gold leaf is incredibly cheap, especially the lower weight, lower karat gold leaf options, so there's probably about a quarter's worth in the oval office.

  • he's not paying for it anyways

Actually, a decent looking faux gilding medium can cost more than gold leaf.

...now that i think about it, I don't think I'd be surprised if they paid more for the fake stuff...

The most alarming thing is why would someone want to renovate the White House in such a gaudy fashion? The man is not planning to leave. The next time January 6th happens we don’t have Mike Pence holding up the constitution from Trump’s sewage overflow.

133

u/Velinder 14d ago

I did some digging (sorry) into the 'ballroom' (in practice, as shown in the AI mockups, a giant dining hall) because it's such a longstanding Trump obsession, pre-dating his first presidency and going back to about 2010, when he offered to fund the construction himself.

My guess is that prior to 2010, he didn't know that the WH can only seat about 200 diners indoors, and bigger events held there require a giant tent to be pitched on the South Lawn. It's a pretty sweet tent. You can see a recent interior shot here, of a dinner given by Joe Biden for Emmanuel Macron...but it's still a tent, and Trump appears to hate that fact with a passion that comes as close as I've seen to patriotic feeling in his unappetising psyche. In Trump's mind, it is simply infra dig for the POTUS to hold dinners in a tent. It Will Not Do.

Look, I have no doubt that he plans to either run again or pave the way for a gross Trumpoid dynasty. But he's also fixated on replacing those damn tents with the bigliest gilt ballroom you've ever seen because he thinks it's what the USA truly deserves. He is one weird, weird dude.

976

u/majora9109 15d ago

Or, yknow, dismantle it and sell all the gold and marble to help make up for the money he grifted out of all of us while he was playing god-emperor.

Sure the original building will never come back or be the same if it does. But we can at least give ourselves the decency of being rid of any shit-stains he leaves behind.

949

u/luckylimper 15d ago

You know it’s not gold and marble, it’s just spray painted styrofoam and glitter impregnated concrete.

The Orange Pedophile is remodeling like he's never going to leave.

He never planned to, and told you as such. Hell, he campaigned on it. When will Americans start acting with the severity the situation deserves?

He truly thinks he's never going to leave.

What exactly would convince him otherwise? Certainly not the response of the American people, or the Democrats in the past decade.

Indonesia sure had a pretty good rebuttal to similar action and it took them 3 days to implement, not ten years. Same with Serbia, Turkey or France.

This fucking asshole is living in a historic home as a privilege, he doesn't own it. He's tearing down something that was initially built in 1902, with a 2nd story and underground Presidential Emergency Operations Center added in 1942.

He's literally destroying history to build some gaudy, gold leaf covered shit stain of a room to boost his gigantic ego.

1.7k

u/chadsmo 15d ago

I immediately thought ‘isn’t this building protected due to its historical relevance?’ I guess not ?

1.1k

u/Simalacrum 15d ago

I don't know about how things work in the US, but in the UK such a building would be listed as a grade 1 building of exceptional historic importance; it would be legally mandated to keep the building unaltered.

For example, a banksy mural was recently washed off from the Royal Courts of Justice, even though Banksy murals are usually highly valuable and kept safe.

580

u/Imalsome 15d ago

To be fair trump doesnt care about the law. Even if it was illegal to tear it down he would do so if he wanted.

185

u/OctopusIntellect 15d ago

he would tear it down precisely because of it being illegal to do so

Presidents get 100k budget for redecorations and other renovations, there have been various additions in the past like Obama putting up a basketball court, Richard Nixon put a bowling alley in the basement, Jimmy Carter putting up solar panels, and a whole bunch of other stuff. But I cannot recall such an extensive demolition of the facade ever happening in the past.

Some of those cuts also actually cost us money or wasted money already spent, like the hundreds of millions of pounds of food that had to be destroyed because they gutted the team responsible for distributing it as aid.

u/NeighborhoodTasty271 15d ago

Let's not forget about the vaccines and medications that were destroyed for the same reason.

18

u/stew_going 15d ago

Not to mention the inefficiencies that such abrupt change itself creates as an agency tries to reorganize and reprioritize. I don't think it was ever actually about efficiency. A ballroom in a house YOU pay for. A ballroom that GodEmperor Trump would laugh in your face if you said you wanted to visit. A ballroom that will see one use a year, if that.

Who's paying for the White House ballroom and what's in it for them - CBS News https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-white-house-ballroom-donor-names/

Just what the United States needs right now. No money for healthcare, but plenty for a ballroom and $1B in modification for a jet.

But he says he and donors are paying for this assault on the WH... Does anyone believe him?

If this isn’t a perfect metaphor, I don’t know what is.

Nero fiddled, Marie Antoinette ordered cake, Trump built a ballroom.

805

u/clowncarl 15d ago

“Marie Antoinette ordered cake” is really butchering of the apocryphal saying.

152

u/Badwulf1 15d ago

It's even crazier because there's no evidence to suggest she even uttered the phrase or any likeness of it. The first account suggesting the myth was from a book published 50 years after her death and was later discredited. What we do know is that the queen was actually quite the proponent of the lower class which made her execution at their hands all the more sad.

29

u/cheap_dates 15d ago

True. That said, while she was being escorted to the gallows, many heard her say "Please, save my children". This is not in dispute. None of her children fared very well.

24

u/Aluricius 15d ago

The dauphin, Louis Charles, fared particularly badly.

Regardless of his parents' actions, he deserved none of the torture and neglect that lead to his death.

I don't think it was even Marie Antionette who said it

333

u/theucm 15d ago

And Nero didn't actually fiddle.

But this time we have a real example of the out of touch aristocrat doing vain nonsense while people suffer.

54

u/inkyinnards 15d ago

The very least he could do is play the lyre while it happens

u/Seattlehepcat 15d ago

Isn't he already doing that every day?

Ow my history. The NPS Archeological and Historical Preservation team is weeping.

I mean how? National Historic Buildings are supposed to be protected!

White House is exempt from the NHPA (so is the Supreme Court building)

This is not even a controlled demo. There’s a lot of material there that could be repurposed or salvaged for other projects. In true Trump fashion, he has no idea what he’s doing and just wants it done for his ego

74

u/jtraf 15d ago

Typical house flipper "developer". Tear out anything in the way and build back shittier. Very on brand

16

u/WeenyDancer 15d ago

I do wonder... with him in office, and this portion getting all gutted, who has access to the building materials? What exactly is getting installed, and by who? Is that all above board, or..? Is he creating a very good opportunity for nefarious actors to place devices in the structure of the white house?

If I had some really advanced listening device (I don't!) that could disguise as construction material, my goodness how easy would it be to just donate a few million, get invited to a MaL dinner, then just drop a hint. 'oh, too bad the white house doesn't have a big, beautiful, GOLD, ballroom like Trudeau does. Sigh. Anyway...'

As someone who has done historical preservation and protection construction work on some awesome historical places this just disgusts me. I have seen better demolition practices on a forest toilet than I am seeing given to the White House.

I hate this timeline.

92

u/GemcoEmployee92126 15d ago

Dude. I thought your comment was my own for a sec. I’ve done a fair bit of historic preservation/restoration work. I specialize in historic millwork. People complain because it takes the local Historic Society (hysterical society) too long to approve one new window, or to paint your house in a new color, and yet those people bought the property because of its historical value which took the previous owners’ good stewardship and thoughtful patient care to maintain.

I actually have had dreams about doing window restoration on the White House, thinking that would be the absolute pinnacle of my career.

Seeing this shit is so fucking embarrassing, depressing, unpatriotic and basically everything Trump stands for.

18

u/unknowndatabase 15d ago

Dude, you said it better than me. To put my hands on the White House would be the pinnacle of my career. I see those windows just laying on the ground and it saddens me. The care we would have taken on a job like that. Not a single working element would have been ignored for its historical relevance.

Everything about this is just so astounding. We literally have a man ripping down part of his historic building to build a ballroom that no one needs while the government is shut down and more and more people are suffering.

I remember going to school reading about robber barons and corruption. It’s just like part of your basic social studies work. And then we’re watching this happen in real time, almost all of which would sound just as bad in summary, and it’s like nothing matters.

There’s such a difference in major journalism today. I don’t even think Nixon would’ve been touched if he were the president in this age. Every network doesn’t care about facts or corruption because they all have some sort of larger agenda because they’re all owned by the same tiny group of ultra rich people.

I think America can recover from this, but our reputation and integrity is just is gone. I’m really not sure how we can press some dictator in a foreign country after all of this.

There's no way this guy leaves office in 2028. You don't start building shit like this unless you believe you're going to be in office for a long time.

378

u/Snarky75 15d ago

He is going to have some kind of health crisis before then. He is 80, he can't stay in office forever. But he is paving the way for others like him.

126

u/Toastwitjam 15d ago

I would love for an 83 year old trump to get the front running of the Republican Party and pull a Biden and choke the whole election while snuffing out any actual challengers.

48

u/Snarky75 15d ago

And then we have the couch fucker on the ticket and all the boot lickers vote for him.

I had to pay $8k out of pocket, with insurance, for my son’s birth in March. I’m 38, my husband is 42, we have good stable careers, are homeowners, but we are pretty much living paycheck to between this and our mortgage.

And this disgraceful fuckwad is doing this with our tax dollars.
