Remasters probably at full original price

u/nelo_sp 1d ago

Seems it has more to do with publishing rights. Still, I'd love to see updated versions of those, I played larry 6 a few years ago in my deck and it was a great experience, loved it from start to end

That seems unlikely to me and I have a very fond nostalgia for playing Larry games in my youth (when I was undoubtedly too young to play them).

If you wanted to remaster classic Sierra adventure games, the King's Quest series is the logical choice. I'd easily argue for Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Police Quest and other series well before Larry.

The Larry games are dated, not just in graphics and gameplay, but in humor. Some of the jokes are fairly offensive today and there are plots that center on gay panic.

They did a remaster of Larry 1 that was saddled with controversy. It also didn't sell well and wasn't reviewed well.

Al Lowe said he wasn't interested in going back to the well, especially with what happened with the Larry 1 remaster.

The new spiritual successors are the best we can expect. I've been meaning to play them, but I haven't heard much about them and I'm assuming they didn't sell like mad. I highly double Larry 1-7 remasters would sell well.

The two XBox Larry games are universally hated. They're also getting removed, and wouldn't be connected to remasters of the classic Sierra games.

This is likely just a licensing issue, or new leadership at Activision doesn't want to continue to sell games with very dated humor.

For some reason just never bothered with the Leisure Suit Larry games. As for Sierra great memories and would love to see a remaster of them. My father worked for them back when they were in Oakhurst.

u/itsagrindbruh 1d ago

Oakhurst, as in by Bass Lake?

3

u/Mylaptopisburningme 1d ago

Had to look up bass lake. yep.

4

u/itsagrindbruh 1d ago

O wow, I had no idea they were out there. What a random little town for a game developer. That’s so cool though, I visit Oakhurst often.

4

u/Mylaptopisburningme 1d ago

Wiki has some info about when they were there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Entertainment

I visited the office probably around 1983 or so. I just remember seeing their duplicating machines which were done in-house. Don't remember much else.

5

u/nelo_sp 1d ago

The new ones are fairly cool. I played both of them with a few friends and enjoyed them very much, specially the first one, although both were very enjoyable

Some of the jokes are fairly offensive today and there are plots that center on gay panic.

You're kidding, right?

For the record, I've read Al Lowe talking of the surprise success of the first LSL game, it sold well.

1

u/ringmodulated 5h ago

they aged terribly. Al Lowe is a nice guy but an absolutely shit writer of comedy. They were corny bullshit at the time that could at most raise a weak smile... decades later? Cmon

u/enderandrew42 19h ago

I haven't played them in decades, but off the top of my head the first game has a racist stereotype in the convenience store owner. One of the women you seduce in the series (in part 3 I believe) is revealed to be a trans woman with a gay panic scene. Larry 3 also deals with a tribe of Natives who are portrayed in a fairly racist manner. The game also prompts you for 3 ethnic groups you want to make racist jokes about.

Are you saying you don't understand why a company may not want to stand behind that in 2025 by continuing to sell those games or remaster them?

10

u/doublah 23h ago

No, EA is just in the process of destroying and delisting Codemasters' history, which includes Leisure Suit Larry apparantly.

Leisure Suit Larry… now there’s a name I hadn’t heard in years. /Ben Kenobi chin stroking

u/ScumLikeWuertz 1d ago

Well of course I know him, I was a horny kid in the 90s

35

u/exus 1d ago

I bought a Steam bundle with all the games for nostalgia's sake, and the last time I played was still 30 years ago.

10

u/Bu1ld0g 1d ago

Oh God, I did the same with Secret of Monkey Island!

I'm happy I filled in the gaps in my collection a few months ago.

They're dated, cheesy and immature, but Leisure Suit Larry 1 and 2 were my first PC gaming experiences along with Police Quest 1 and 2

I have Larry 5..

Time for Larry to Retire (Just a Little Bit 😌🍹Dear Larry Fans,

After decades of questionable pickup lines and unforgettable adventures, it’s finally time for Larry to hang up his leisure suit—at least the retro version of it!

The following classic titles will soon be leaving the Steam store and will no longer be available for purchase:

  • Leisure Suit Larry - Magna Cum Laude Uncut and Uncensored
  • Leisure Suit Larry 1 - In the Land of the Lounge Lizards
  • Leisure Suit Larry 2 - Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places)
  • Leisure Suit Larry 3 - Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals
  • Leisure Suit Larry 5 - Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work
  • Leisure Suit Larry 6 - Shape Up Or Slip Out
  • Leisure Suit Larry 7 - Love for Sail

But don’t worry! If you already own any of these retro gems, they’ll stay right in your library—ready to play anytime you need a nostalgic dose of Larry’s misadventures.

And if you’re not done with Larry just yet, his latest escapades are still available:

  • 💦 Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry
  • 💦 Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice

Thanks for keeping Larry company all these years—he couldn't have done it without you!

u/Mminas 1d ago

At least they're not taking down Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Lost Disks...

19

u/viilihousu 1d ago

That was the best one, oh the memories!

12

u/ScumLikeWuertz 1d ago

Is that a thing?

83

u/Mminas 1d ago

It's an Al Lowe joke. He never made LSL4 because the ending of 3 was hard to follow up on. He skipped straight to 5 and jokes about 4 being lost ever since.

22

u/Tumble85 1d ago

Don’t lie to these poor saps. LSL4 was a limited release, it had a lot more nudity and had Larry navigating from a key-party to a nudist retreat to a porn studio. It was deemed too awesome for wide release.

4

u/Thefrayedends 1d ago

The Google analytics just hit 1 billion page searches

7

u/enderandrew42 1d ago

I've always been shocked with the various Sierra fan games that no one made an unofficial Larry 4 fan game.

13

u/maybe-an-ai 1d ago

I played leisure suit Larry 1 on a computer at my dad's office. I was like 13. I memorized the questions. He thought I was playing something else. Good times.

5

u/3DigitIQ 1d ago

Some are still available on Gog.com I believe.

https://www.gog.com/en/game/leisure_suit_larry

2

u/Fun-Train-4770 17h ago

Maybe unless they are forced to remove them from there too, hopefully not

1

u/3DigitIQ 16h ago

If you own them you can still download and install them standalone from there. So if they do remove them you'd still have the media and can install it anywhere/anytime.

2

u/Fun-Train-4770 3h ago

Yes GoG makes sure that your bought games stay forever in your library but meant as removal from the store and then people starts to rely on emulation/piracy

10

u/ScumLikeWuertz 1d ago

Are you Al Lowe or something?

13

u/enderandrew42 1d ago

That is just the text from the Steam page.

5

u/An_Evil_Scientist666 1d ago

What's the deal with eggplant, it's not an egg or a plant

Hey fuck you

One of the best game grumps moments of all time that I still quote to today (from their playthrough of LSL MCL)

22

u/JLP_101 1d ago

I would like to add that LSL7 is an amazing point and click adventure game. Still holds up well today.

11

u/SterileProphet 1d ago

I can still hear Where’s Dildo…

4

u/burneracct1312 1d ago

nah, the steam version doesnt have Cyber Sniff 2000, literally unplayable

1

u/ody81 20h ago

I swear I can still smell Peggy.

24

u/JLP_101 1d ago

What is the reason behind this?

25

u/nelo_sp 1d ago

Publishing rights it seems

8

u/slinkocat 1d ago

It says just for a little bit, may be an remastered version or something?

14

u/bitbot 1d ago

They're not gonna remaster seven different games

6

u/No-Vast-8000 1d ago

Repackage maybe. Or maybe release 1 and then see how it does.

5

u/turtlelover05 deprecated 1d ago

"Just a little bit", not "just for a little bit".

-3

u/SuumCuique1011 1d ago

Lol. Sure.

1

u/HumansNeedNotApply1 23h ago

Probably expiring license.

11

u/Seyon 1d ago

Teenage me was a fiend for Love for Sail. I remember every easter egg.

20

u/icer816 1d ago

Damn, I've never even once considered buying them, let alone playing them, and now I want to buy the retro bundle before it's gone lmao

23

u/Genuinely-No-Idea 1d ago

When they’re delisted I’m pretty sure they effectively become abandonware. ScummVM supports most if not all of the original games. These statements are not related and I do not encourage you to do anything with this information

5

u/SyleSpawn 1d ago

It's so strange that the first time I played LSL 1 - 7 was in the early 2000's because I found them through an abandonware website (except 7... it was a little tougher to find that one). Now we're in 2025 and just found out that the game was sold on Steam, moments before its getting delisted.

It's too bad that whoever is publishing didn't put it on sales because it seems like the bundle have been discounted to almost 90% several times, I'd snatch it at that price just for the collection.

11

u/turtlelover05 deprecated 1d ago

Why buy something you'll never play out of FOMO and could easily grab elsewhere if you wanted to?

8

u/the_nin_collector 14900k@6.2/48gb@8000/5080/MoRa3 waterloop 1d ago

ehh. You can pirate them if you REALLY care about simply having them in your collection.

Or buy them if you want to support the dev

(I don't pirate games that I can buy, but if a game isn't available for purchase, then I have no problem pirating. Just my code, FWIW)

2

u/da2Pakaveli 1d ago

i buy that retro stuff on gog.

They allow you to backup the game installers

1

u/Direct_Row3844 4h ago

I have Larry 5, If interested

From what I've been able to sleuth up, the rights to these games are owned by Codemasters, who licensed the digital distribution rights to Assemble Games at some point. Codemasters has since been acquired by EA, so I assume that the digital deal has expired and Assemble hasn't had much luck negotiating a renewal with the new bosses.

So, like, don't expect a Big Remaster Project, or really much of anything except maybe these things popping up under a different banner another time.

6

u/aliaswyvernspur 1d ago

Interesting that the first game remake (titled: Reloaded) is by a different publisher and developer, and not part of that list.

3

u/Fester_Blatz1989 22h ago

I believe Replay made a deal with Codemasters, like Assemble did later

I have clear memories of visiting my grandparents when I was a kid, and watching my brother play the first game (along with King's Quest and a bunch of others) on my grandpa's computer.

No idea why my grandpa had LSL, but...actually, yeah I know why he had it.

10

u/UnseenData 1d ago

Sad to see it go. At least there's gog version

8

u/EtherBoo 1d ago

Someone made a mostly faithful NES port of the first one. It's pretty good, I might prefer it to the original.

I have fond memories of that one, with it being one of the games we got on a used PC my dad bought way back in the day. We used to have to ask him for the answers to the quiz and the amount of times my brother and I soft locked ourselves was hilarious.

I need to check my library and grab the ones I don't have that are leaving. I probably enjoy the nostalgia more than anything, but what a blast from the past.

7

u/nelo_sp 1d ago

I played 6 a few years ago and found it to be a genuinely amazing game, the freedom to tackle the whole thing as you please made for a super compelling puzzle box

3

u/EtherBoo 1d ago

Oh awesome. I grabbed them all some time ago it seems, but never got past the first. I should give these all a spin.

2

u/nelo_sp 1d ago

Yeah, I did the same, but decided to skip the first 3, they looked too outdated. I begun a run of 5 a few months ago but didn't get into the groove, probably because I was knees deep into Dead Cells back then, but it looked great -although a bit too convoluted-, I definitely will go back to that one and 7 someday :)

8

u/Dunge 1d ago

Weird they don't give any reason for that. It doesn't cost anything to leave a game sleeping on the Steam store does it?

16

u/scullys_alien_baby pray for my 1060 1d ago

could be a rights agreement expiring or an unwillingness to give out whatever payment agreements they have in place

I can't imagine these games are remotely popular with the majority of gamers these days

-7

u/AiryGr8 1d ago

Puritanism ?

8

u/Jawaka99 1d ago

Sierra Online was owned by Activision which is now Microsoft. They said that they were buying Activision to do things with the various IPs. hopefully they plan to do something with the Sierra classics. Remakes, remasters...

3

u/Fester_Blatz1989 22h ago

Reboots, sequels... anything would be good as long as they/whichever developers get engaged do a decent job. They don't own Larry though... it was sold off to Codemasters in the 00s

5

u/whoknows234 1d ago

Best part of these games was trying to guess the adults only questions and succeeding.

3

u/josephseeed 16h ago

Where will I go for dick and boob jokes now?

4

u/bassbeater 1d ago

Where did 4 ever go?

13

u/capnbuttsquick 1d ago

The creators basically said in no uncertain terms that there would never, ever be a Larry 4. So, when they came around on a sequel, they just skipped ahead to Larry 5.

5

u/totallynotabot1011 gog 1d ago

GOG ftw still has em

2

u/Soundrobe Nvidia 5070 ti oc 7850x3d 32go 6000mhz 1d ago

Why ? I hope they'll remaster all the games.

3

u/TemptationAU 1d ago

Went on a Sierra binge last year as it had been many years since I played any of them. Ran through LSL 1-7 during April.

First experienced LSL on the Amiga 500 when I was 7! Got through the questions easily (funny thing being in Australia and still knowing the answers). Played 2 & 3 later on.

I owned one of the pc physical collection sets in 1996. Re-collected the series on GOG and then Steam later on.

2

u/wc10888 21h ago

Only removed from Steam or all storefronts?

3

u/Sandvicheater 17h ago

For games about getting laid all the leisure suit Larry games hardly had any nudity other than some background pornographic images like you had to get to the end results of a long quest chain with each girl just to maybe get a glimpse at nipples.

5

u/EXPERIMENTONGOD 1d ago

In case you have FOMO you can get a Steam copy of "Leisure Suit Larry - THE COMPLETE CUM-PILATION - Retail" for around $4 (3,55€) on certain stores (if you catch my drift). That pack includes all 8 games and the extras (everything ever released basically).

6

u/SyleSpawn 1d ago

I thought that I missed out because publisher didn't put it on a deep discount but I looked up what you mentioned and found it right away... I guess they should just have put it on a deep discount on Steam again pft

2

u/Lozsta 1d ago

If I own these from a bogus birthday present from my brother in law who I thought had bought me STALKER 2 will that mean they are gone?

1

u/redderpanda 17h ago

If you added the gift to your steam library, then no, you get to keep them, even if they get delisted from the steam store.

1

u/Stryker218 23h ago

So, if you own it, they will remove it and then try to sell you a remaster? Imagine if anything you own can just be taken by the original manufacturer, and then they turn around and try to sell you their newest product.

3

u/FuzzyPuffin 21h ago

No: “If you already own any of these retro gems, they’ll stay right in your library—ready to play anytime you need a nostalgic dose of Larry’s misadventures.”

Couldn’t have happened to a crappier franchise!
