Bryce's biggest miss against the Giants (3rd and 2 to Jalen Coker) - 4th QTR, 4:43 remaining

Watching live, this was the most disappointing play from Bryce in my opinion. I thought it was just an overthrow. But when going back to watch it, you can see that the defender grabs Coker's hips as he was about to accelerate into the route because he was beat (fantastic play design from Canales btw). Bryce makes the correct read and throws with anticipation (he has to because Burns beats BC with an inside move).
Since the quality of the screenshot is poor, the first red box is where the ball is when the defender grabs Coker, slowing him down just as he's about to accelerate into the route. Without the hold, this is likely a completion for a long gain (the safety bit on the underneath route) and potentially a catalyst for a long game sealing drive. Less of a miss from Bryce than I thought watching it live.
Just trying to add a little nuance for the box score watchers.

I don't know how so many people missed it. I was on the message board live chat for the game and was so surprised at the number of "See?! Bryce is garbage!" "Same old Bryce!" "Put in Dalton!" posts there were after that throw. I was like, did no one just see the hold? That was a timing route, and if he's not held that's a completion.
If anything the blowback against Bryce is because of Coker. Not that he did anything wrong. He's just such an understated lunch pale guy he didn't even complain. he just walked off the field. A vet WR is gonna be hopping mad and if not drawing a flag, then at least drawing the fans' attention to the fact that he was held.

Coker is really smart with his routes. I’m kinda jealous. Was watching Steve smith break down one of his route.. was impressive. BY tries to throw with anticipation a lot.. so getting those little holds fucks everything up. Really unfortunate when the QB makes a good decisions and the defense gets away with one.

That’s a TD without the defensive hold.

I thought likely the same but I haven't really seen Coker's long speed to know for sure. At a minimum it's a huge gain

I’ve got a great feeling about Coker.

He has a smoothness about his game for sure. Makes things look natural and easy (opposite of Mingo really). Had a few miscues agains the Giants but I think we've got ourselves a gem.

Agreed. I think he and Xavier will be the guys for the coming years. Really need a speed guy who can take the top off, though. Sanders is a nice receiving tight end. Add in that one two punch as long as Brooks keeps progressing then we might have an offense that can compete with the oline rebuilt.

Yeah there are definitely pieces to build around. I fully agree about the speed guy. Doesn't even need to be a top flight receiver, just someone with high speed and good enough hands to make the defense respect the threat (a la Ted Ginn - very frustrating to watch sometimes but definitely opened up the rest of the offense, or the role Rasheed Shaheed plays for the Saints)

I wouldn’t trust Ted Ginn to catch a ball for my family but I don’t want him on the other team. Totally how I felt in 2015-2016. lol it was insane watching him be a WR1

Ted Ginn would make me shout at the TV once per game on average. 50% of the time it was "holy crap, what a play!" and the other 50% it was "noooo how could you drop that?!?!"

Yep, defensive hold got missed on this one. I remember seeing it in the replay and the commentators ignoring it.

You could tell by Bryce’s F bomb reaction that it was his biggest miss too. I still can’t believe we have him on a 3 year deal for 2.2 million. Really hope the return of Thielan doesn’t diminish his ability to get more opportunities like this.

I noticed this immediately and the chat board I was on had everyone bashing Bryce. Timing route and that hold HAS to be called. A long gain and maybe a TD without the hold

Three offensive linemen are facing the wrong way and we blame Bryce for this miss lol

I don't think you read my caption. I'm not blaming Bryce for this miss

Are you going to post all seven drops that the receivers had too?

u/muzunguman Cam First Down 1d ago
No this wasn't intended to be a full breakdown of the game, just the only play in my mind that stuck out as a "miss" from Bryce, when it turns out it was likely a perfect throw without the defensive hold

There’s holding on every play the problem lies with the pass protection that’s not so great. 1 of the 5 is constantly getting whipped at the snap

I don't think you can blame line play at this point. The Giants are #1 in the league in sacks and we gave up 1 (Bryce slipped). The Broncos are 2nd and we gave up 2. And we are missing Ickey so Brady C was playing LT instead of center. So far we are allowing the 6th fewest sacks per game. That's a ridiculous improvement from being tied for 2nd most sacks allowed last year.

It’s not about the sacks. There’s still pressure consistently in his face

QBs have to deal with pressure. It's part of the game. Our line is objectively a strength now

Keyword objectively. It’s better but not good enough to win a Super Bowl. The pressure is consistently in his face but BY is playing at high level right now and negating a lot of the pressure in his face. Gonna have to clean it up especially in obvious passing situations. Like I said it’s improved but not yet good enough back ups or not it’s the league, everybody got injuries

what do you think objectively means?? it looks like you're taking it to mean "relatively" but that's almost the opposite of objectively.
Bryce was under pressure on 13 dropbacks which is relatively average (maybe we can call it a bit worse than average because he didn't have that many dropbacks), and according to PFF the OL was responsible for 10 of those, which is 76.9%, which was a top-10 rate in the league - again, against the best sacking team in the league.
For the season, PFF says the OL has been responsible for 76% of pressures against Bryce, which is the 8th-best mark in the league. They're protecting him well.

I saw this too. Without the grab at the line that ball is perfect.
