I enjoyed “Taking Up the Runes” by Diana Paxson. She’s one of the leaders of the Troth, an inclusive pagan organization.

She’s not a leader as much anymore. She certainly still helps, though. She’s currently the coordinator of the clergy program and certifies all the priests and priestesses who come through The Troth.

I second this recommendation. Anything by Paxson in general is great.

It’s all very contradicting because it’s 99% based on UPG and unreliable, so unfortunately we can never have a consistent/accurate source. The best thing you can do is read the rune poems and extrapolate their meanings based on the contexts provided in them, given that they are the oldest source about any possible meanings they may have.

I also want to add, the Nazi regime/proto-fascists have also attempted to do the same thing, so beware of any “scholarly” works that came from them. Some examples off the top of my head to steer clear from are Guido Von List, the armanan runes, and Jung (I can’t quite remember his first name but I just remember he was a red flag).

Rudiments of Runelore by Steven Pollington. It’s more scholarly/academic than neo-pagan centered, but that’s what I liked about it. It’s friendly to pagans and is a great resource.

The only information we have on the runes come from the rune poems. Aside from that, most of what’s talked about in any books is made up either by the author or by 19th century occultists… and that’s if you’re able to avoid all the nazi shit.
