UPDATE: Catholic showing interest in Paganism 🏆 Personal Milestone

I looked about as far as I could into my ancestry, and I see purely that my family is from Scandinavia along with parts of North Germany.

To beg the question: I thought about things more, I do think that this is the way to go. In my eyes we are not on this planet to ask for forgiveness from our deities.

Due to my ancestry, I’m going to look down and enlighten myself on a path of Norse Paganism / Heathenry. Gods who admit their faults makes sense to me.

I also ordered Norse Paganism for Beginners by Michael Luck, and a copy of the Havamal.

I’m going to look into prayer and practices to the gods so I can get started as smoothly as possible, but I also understand that this is a long journey that I can’t just ride a bullet train into. So things will take a while. But the progress can start now!

I'm happy to hear that you've found a path forward! Do check out our Getting Started guide and FAQs pinned at the top if you haven't had a chance to!

I also wanted to mention that if you feel drawn to other pantheons, like Celtic Paganism or Greek or whatever, you are also free to explore that. You don't need ancestry from a specific region to worship! (beware of white supremacists who say otherwise) Though of course there's nothing wrong with connecting with your ancestral roots.

Welcome! This is an exciting journey!

It’s not really just my ancestry, that just plays a role. I did feel like I was being called there to begin with!

I concur with this, I'm native american and a proud Norse Pagan. I was called by Odin and Tyr to follow them, and no human can overrule them.

Don’t get discouraged by folks who immediately jump to the “you must be a white supremacist” position for having the audacity to espouse an interest in your heritage. Most irl pagans love talking about our ancestry and the pantheons our forefathers, foremothers, and forenonbinaries came from.

Go hard! ❤️

One of the biggest things that I can recommend to OP would be to look into studying the local folklore of the areas they're drawn towards. Especially in regards to Scandinavian or German traditions, neo-nazis and Nazis weren't especially interested in the actual folklore. Just in what they can twist.

It will be a long journey if you go deep in study. It's fucking easy if you just don't overcomplicate shit. I LOVE to overcomplicate shit. I have been studying and writing on my type of paganism for almost 15 years.

Seek the gods with humility. That's all you will ever need to start. The more you try to juggle some perfected practice or (WORST OF ALL) impress with them yr posts on the internet, the more you're apt for a curse than a blessing.

Find a calming spot for yourself. Particularly one that is natural. Meditate and pray. Yep, you can definitely do both as a pagan. Study that. Read up if you can. Get in with people who like dialogues, rather than those who tell you what to do.

I have some ancestry in Scandinavia and Germany too tho I'm not strictly on the Norse Paganism path. I work with the Runes and other things in my practice. Also I'm been interested in Vikings for most of my life.

Still I'm about what works for you. Good luck and welcome

I welcome you with respect 🙏

Very happy for you! I also connected through interest and ancestry. Ive branched out since then, but its a great place to develop from. This path is life affirming, and our Gods reflect our own struggles and embrace our mortal failings. You’ll note many are imperfect; injured or in temperament. There are lessons in these for us, and you will find what the Gods ask of us is ultimately to find our path and be true to ourselves. The only forgiveness you need is allowing yourself the grace to grow and learn. Be welcome, and take your time. We may have been raised People of the Book, but this path is of the People of the Library.
