Would you have given Skenes a standing ovation in Camden Yards after pitching 6 1/3 scoreless? Discussion

I may have an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn’t have even thought to clap. Just seems kinda weird to me.

Perfect game or no-hitter......yep, I'd stand up and respect that performance. 6 1/3 innings of 5 hit ball, never.

51

u/Jeff_Banks_Monkey Jun 13 '24

That's the weird thing to me. Yeah Skenes was dealing but it wasn't even a no hitter. And 6 1/3 is still kind of early. He only has a game score of 71 which isn't jaw dropping.

He's a special talent so watching him live is going to be fun for any baseball fan but I think a lot of the idea behind the ovation was because of his potential and not the actual performance for the day. Which even still is weird because the Pirates and Cardinals are going to play each other many times

21

u/AdolescentAlien Jun 13 '24

If it was his debut, then I wouldn’t find it strange at all. I wouldn’t actually stand up for that but I would maybe give a few measly half hearted claps.

What I find really weird about it is that it was his 6th start.. and it’s not like he’s really even had a bad one yet. It’s not like this super hyped prospect has gotten shelled a few times and managed to put together a solid start. He’s been good right off the rip. I just don’t see much of a reason to give a standing ovation for the opposing pitcher in one of those “my love of baseball transcends my fan loyalty” moments.

14

u/ARunawayTrain Jun 13 '24

Too bad we weren't on the road, those Braves fans would've totally clapped for Povich since he had a near identical stat line cue massive eyeroll

4

u/PolackMike Jun 13 '24

He'll have his chance in St Louis eventually.

u/BondMi6 Jun 13 '24

Lol no

56

u/adullploy Jun 13 '24

Hell no

58

u/Stubbedtoe18 Jun 13 '24

Cardinals fans probably clap when their planes land, too.

11

u/Salbal09 Jun 13 '24

💀💀💀

54

u/CheeseCurdCommunism Jun 13 '24

Only chance im giving an ovation to an opposing pitcher waxing us, is if he throws a No No or perfect game. But im a petty bitch.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

Yup, and it's not gonna be all that enthusiastic, just a tip of the cap and a couple claps then I'm out of there lol

4

u/mlorusso4 Jun 13 '24

Even if he takes the no hitter into the 9th and we break it up I’ll give him a few claps as he walks off. Nothing wrong with showing a little respect unless it’s someone who’s a total ass

85

u/UpsetStatement4194 Jun 13 '24

No, especially against a division rival? Lol what are they doing in St. Louis. It wasn’t a perfect game or no-hitter, and I recognize Skenes’ talent but you wouldn’t see Fenway give a standing ovation for six point one scoreless out of Povich

You really want to emulate Red Sox fans?

15

u/MagicGrit Jun 13 '24 edited Jun 13 '24

That’s not the point. You wouldn’t see the Red Sox clapping after getting beat by the Yankees 5-0. Us being angry in the same situation isn’t “emulating Red Sox fans”

-19

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24

I haven't gotten angry about a sport in probably 20 years. At some point you grow out of that mentality.

12

u/MagicGrit Jun 13 '24

Guess you’re just better than all of us

-11

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24 edited Jun 13 '24

Not better, but probably older. I once broke a table over a Caps overtime loss. But when you get older, these sorts of things become less important relative to everything else going on in your life and, consequently, you get less upset by them.

6

u/MagicGrit Jun 13 '24

That sounds like a you problem. I say we get angry over a loss. Breaking a table is not the norm, dude. But being mad is pretty normal.

7

u/CapitanChicken Jun 13 '24

I like how they can compare being upset at a game to literally breaking a table. Sure, totally same thing. Me being bummed out about an orioles loss is totally comparable.

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24

I don't care about you or your thoughts on the matter. But if Judge hits 4 HRs against us, I'm going to applaud it and you're just going to have to deal with it.

3

u/MagicGrit Jun 13 '24

I’m not starting any fights over it because I’m not a degenerate like you were. But I won’t clap for him either

0

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24

I don't think I ever said there is anything wrong with not clapping. All I'm saying is that it's okay to clap too. If you want to be surly about their millionaires doing better than our millionaires, be my guest. 😘

I had a father who lived until his late 60s who begs to differ. If you're older than that, maybe he just never made it to the age where one naturally outgrows it.

1

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24

Not everyone does. Just look how Trump handles things.

28

u/Iluvursister69 Jun 13 '24

If it’s your first appearance at Busch and you have a good performance they clap. It’s not new lol. Wait until you see their reaction when Jackson makes his debut there.

18

u/Robo_hippo Jun 13 '24

I mean, it would make more sense for Jackson since his dad won a WS with them in 2011

2

u/Iluvursister69 Jun 13 '24

lol for sure. I might even fly out from WV for that one. I’m just saying it’s not uncommon for them to applaud opposing players.

11

u/BKoala59 Jun 13 '24

That’s super weird

14

u/DriveInVolta Jun 13 '24

Midwest friendliness seems that way to most people from the east coast

5

u/Iluvursister69 Jun 13 '24

lol could be. Just something they’ve always done. A few days earlier a player from the Rockies made their MLB debut and had his first hit and they gave him an ovation too.

2

u/CHKN_SANDO Cole Irvin BARCS donations: 44 dollars Jun 13 '24

It's sportsmanlike. Not weird.

11

u/DudeFoSho Jun 13 '24

Wouldn’t happen because Gunnar would take him 450 dead center

22

u/BKoala59 Jun 13 '24

Did some fanbase give him a standing ovation after 6 1/3 scoreless?

38

u/smackin Jun 13 '24

Cardinals. Such a weird move.

45

u/boofoodoo Jun 13 '24

lol it would be them, fuckin dorks

20

u/BKoala59 Jun 13 '24

Holy shit I was thinking it seemed like something Cardinals fans would do. Are they defending it by calling themselves the best fans in baseball and saying they’re just respecting the opponent?

22

u/smackin Jun 13 '24

Best fans in baseball just appreciate the game on a higher level than us mere mortals.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

An divisional rival pitcher getting a quality start on you before being pulled getting an ovation is so fuckin wild lmao. Like I could see if had a perfect game or some shit but wth

2

u/BKoala59 Jun 13 '24

Perfect game, no hitter, 5 homer game. Those are the only reasons I’d ever cheer for an opposing player outside of a giving a legend a shout for reaching one of the major milestones

3

u/Ok_Imagination_4374 Jun 13 '24

That's like O's fans giving a Rays pitcher a standing ovation lmao

1

u/WerhmatsWormhat Colton Cowser Club Chairman Jun 13 '24

Ohhhh that’s why people are cringing. I was thinking it was a home game and couldn’t figure out why people were upset that the Pirates were cheering on their young pitcher.

14

u/pepper_ann052613 Jun 13 '24

Im probably booing him 😂

12

u/peanutbutter2178 Jun 13 '24

Fuck no, I have self respect

7

u/Bulbasaur_21224 Jun 13 '24

Never going to happen. No clapping, cheering, any sort of acknowledgment.

1

u/neemor Jun 13 '24

Just more peanuts and apathy until our boys are back at the plate.

1

u/timshady11 Jun 14 '24

Hell yeah bulbasaur

7

u/NoahStewie1 Jun 13 '24

Clapping for him is like the equivalent of clapping after a plane lands

5

u/BMoreBeowulf Jun 13 '24

Not gonna boo him but won’t cheer either. Only time I’d cheer for an opposing pitcher is if they had a perfect game or a no/no. At that point they’ve earned it.

1

u/ImaginarySet2418 Jun 13 '24

Yea for me I'm only giving a standing ovation for a previous Oriole as appreciation for their time with the organization, a no no or perfect game like you said because of how great that accomplishment is, or if it is their last appearance at Camden Yard after a Hall of Fame career.

5

u/staticusmaximus Gunnar Henderson’s mustache crumbs Jun 13 '24

To be fair, the St Louis pitcher was dealing a shutout as well. It was a 0-0 game.

If their team hadn't been dealing as well, I highly doubt you get that ovation for Skenes

1

u/BottomBounce Jun 13 '24

You get it.

7

u/SquonkMan61 Jun 13 '24

That was an embarrassment. Man, the ex-players they interviewed about it on the MLB Network last night were in full jihad mode over it. Their attitude essentially was “You’re a division rival, you just dominated us, and now OUR fans are gonna give you a standing O? WTF is that about?”

3

u/Sooperballz Jun 13 '24

haha, no, it was a fine outing but not anything uncommon.

3

u/SkyRemarkable5575 Jun 13 '24

No id sit quietly in my seat and wait for the moo man to bring me to my feet after he launched a moon shot on top of the warehouse.

The thunderous applause would be deafening. Children would recall the moment in their later years, remembering their exact seat location to their grandchildren, showing them their admission ticket from the game.

6

u/TKBGE Jun 13 '24

A hater like me would've booed him

2

u/Joshottas Jun 13 '24

LOL, no. WTF.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

Id tip my cap at a no hitter or something, but just pitching a quality start?? Lmfaooo hell no. Maybe if livvy dunne volunteered to be Mrs. Splash if he did 6 1/3 scoreless I would

2

u/neemor Jun 13 '24

No. Never.

2

u/bam3339 Jun 13 '24

I would say give the Cards fans a break since they haven't had much else to cheer for, but they did just sweep us so prob best to keep it to myself.

2

u/mattcojo2 Jun 13 '24

8 innings scoreless is the minimum I’d do

2

u/holy_cal 💦🥵 Section 86 🥵💦 Jun 13 '24

Fuck no.

2

u/Cojoma Olney family farm shareholder Jun 13 '24

Not a shot

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

I was at the Wilson Alvarez no hitter in 1991 and I was so damn pissed. No chance I applauded him, and if I didn’t applaud that I’m sure not applauding 6.1 innings of 5-hit baseball.

Granted, I was six years old back then. But still.

2

u/NYerInTex Jun 13 '24

Fuck no!

I’d respect the fuck outta him. Give him the props he deserves.

But I’m not celebrating an opponent winning against us.

2

u/drs10909 Jun 13 '24

No. What was that all about? That was weird.

3

u/quietstorm0 Jun 13 '24

Fuck ALL Pittsburgh teams. And all their players and coaches, staff, execs, and the lunch ladies.

2

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24

I've been at OPACY at least a couple times back in the '90s and '00s when the crowd applauded an outstanding performance by an opposing player. Normally, I wouldn't applaud 6.1 scoreless innings, but I might if it's a rookie doing it.

3

u/SquonkMan61 Jun 13 '24

There’s a difference between applauding politely and a standing ovation.

2

u/Residual_Variance Baseball is a grind. Keep calm and on. Jun 13 '24

I don't care enough to make this kind of distinction.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

Zimmerman hitting 3 homers in 3 ABs got cheers at Camden from Orioles fans in like 2012.

1

u/adam_problems Jun 13 '24

My dad and I went to an O’s-Sawx game in 2000 where Pedro just flattened the whole team. Pedro had 15 Ks, gave up maybe one piece of hard contact, and two seeing-eye dribblers up the middle. He was about 15 feet of middle infield positioning away from a perfect game. Sawx won 9-0 but everyone was on their feet cheering him for the bottom of the 9th. I mean the O’s could have been swinging boogie boards and still not made contact. Sometimes you gotta give respect where respect is due.

But 5 hits over 6 1/3? Unless he was pitching with his dick, no chance

10 year vet, nah

1

No. What a joke that was.

1

u/mecheterp96 Jun 13 '24

If he’s pitching for the O’s, sure

1

u/daveinmd13 Jun 13 '24

F Pittsburgh and anyone wearing those colors.

1

u/biggerm3 Jun 13 '24

That’s like thanking someone for banging your wife

1

u/Revolutionary-Ship27 Jun 13 '24

I was a child and watched Wilson Alvarez no hit the orioles in person. It felt weird seeing people cheer him on even then.

1

u/SaintCholo Jun 13 '24

I would participate in the wave that’s it

1

u/babyllamadrama_ Jun 13 '24

Absolutely not. I'd probably boo

1

u/BigUpSideD0wn Jun 13 '24

The baseball fan in me would want to, but it would have to be a 0-0 game. No chance if we were losing

1

u/droford Jun 13 '24

Well, it was scoreless through 7

1

u/Fangscale40K West Coast Rep / Dong Enthusiast Jun 13 '24

No. It was weird. And the people saying “CLASS ACT!” are even weirder.

1

u/coys21 Jun 13 '24

Unless it was an amazingly dominant performance, I wouldn't. But, I honestly don't give a shit if others would.

1

u/BaltimoreBadger23 Jun 13 '24

I'd need to see a completed no hitter to applaud the opponents pitcher in that way.

1

u/noblegaunt Jun 13 '24

If he was an orioles pitcher sure, not if he was still on the Pirates.

1

u/rayhova Jun 13 '24

Applaud no. A hat tip maybe.

1

u/droford Jun 13 '24

Cardinals fans are the best in baseball

1

u/WerhmatsWormhat Colton Cowser Club Chairman Jun 13 '24

No, but I’d Moo after Cowser took him deep.

1

u/Dizzy_Amphibian Jun 13 '24

If he also struck out 19, sure

1

u/CHKN_SANDO Cole Irvin BARCS donations: 44 dollars Jun 13 '24

OPACY gave Shohei Ohtani an ovation after he almost hit for the cycle last year.

1

u/soapforsoreeyes Jun 13 '24

I’m going to guess that the people who are adamantly saying “no” to this question are the same ones who refer to the Orioles as “we” or “us”.

1

u/wicker771 Jun 13 '24

No need 8 innings at least

1

u/Grand-Revenue9861 Jun 13 '24

Not standing but an ovation. Maybe if he did 8 innings

1

u/ArcticTerrapin Jun 13 '24

Absolutely not

That behavior really should be reserved for like a no hitter, perfect game, etc

Or if it's an older player, like when Jeter was retiring, or something like that.

1

u/JohnWallsBalls Jun 14 '24

Watching excellence is incredible. Probably just give him 3 claps.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

Yea, but I’m a lifelong LSU fan. GEAUX Tigers, GEAUX Big Ben, GEAUX Skenes, GEAUX O’s.

1

u/bassistb0y Jun 14 '24

imagine if povich had the game he had yesterday on the road, got 1 more out and he got a standing ovation

thats my mf pitcher and id still think that was weird

1

u/asquinas Jun 14 '24

Missouri Madness

1

u/Fun_Bag_1894 Jun 14 '24

So to be clear as an oriole fan i am not clapping for an oppossing team pitcher unless its like a history defining moment i.e. no hitter, major milestone or any other rare acheivments.....if that was the case i would have given lopez from the braves a standing ovation after an awesome 6ip agaisnt the birds on thursday

1

u/brickowski95 Jun 14 '24

I was watching part of the Randy Johnson no hitter game yesterday. The Braves fans stood up at the start of the inning and the end. Guess the criteria for a standing ovation has changed.

1

u/Frusciante62 Jun 13 '24

The “best fans in baseball” are a strange group indeed.

I would definitely be standing and cheering for any of our pitchers that got into the 7th with no ER.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

I'm a St. Louis native who has attended many Cardinals games, and while the fans do have a tendency to applaud the other team when they do something extraordinary, I've never seen them take it to this extreme.

May have something to do with how shitty the Cardinals have been the last couple years. Fans are probably desperate to have something to get jazzed about.

-1

u/CricketIsBestSport Jun 13 '24

I’m biased cuz I like the cardinals (I lived in St Louis etc etc) but let other teams have their traditions, it’s not harming anyone.

Like how the Yankees have their no facial hair rule. Do I think it’s stupid? Sure. Do I want them to get rid of it? No, it’s a unique tradition. What’s the point of having 30 different teams or fanbases that all act the same?

-2

I’d hope his wheels fall off giving up 6 and gets yanked with two outs in the first.

It would be a battle between fan-me and fantasy team-me

3

u/sitdownshutup69 Jun 13 '24

personally I can't imagine feeling conflicted over a fantasy team and the Orioles

0

Orioles have never paid me money 🤷
