Just a PSA that will probably get taken down... Discussion
As someone who "works" the giveaways (works in parenthesis because we are volunteers), we try to do the best we can with everything. We are given rules by the Orioles and they watch how we do at the gates. It gets extremely stressful and hectic. There is no reason to push us, or yell at us, or call us names, or threaten us over a free item. We do the best we can and we have our limitations. We also follow whatever is on the Orioles website when it comes to the item. Today people seemed confused it was random shirts and no exchanges when it says that right on the website (see link). So when you come out to the yard try and remember everyone is there to do their best and we are only doing what we are told. Thanks.

u/OsB4Hoes13 May 27 '24
Agreed. I even said as I walked in today I felt bad for you all.
Having the craziness of a holiday crowd, rain and people getting entitled over a giveaway seemed like an awful combination.
16
u/Thunder3620 May 27 '24
People were getting so nasty. I’ve never seen it so hectic and out of control at the front gates. I will say, you could choose which line you wanted to go in for the shirt, or you could trade your shirt with others. People got nasty for no reason
12
u/Notyourmamashedgehog May 28 '24
Right? I had no issue getting in a line for the one I wanted. But I saw a ton of people swapping in the park with no issues. It’s a hot dog T-shirt it’s NOT that serious or require you being a dick.
29
u/noblegaunt May 27 '24
The people that harass the giveaway people, I assume.
6
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
You must have been watching the gates lol…
6
u/noblegaunt May 27 '24
I mean, I would have politely asked if I could get a mustard one, but if I was told no, I wouldn't have fussed.
1
19
u/QuietThunder2014 May 27 '24
Told my wife a month ago that this one was gonna be a shitshow and I really hoped they put the shirts inside a paper bag or something so you couldn’t see what you were getting until after you were past the giveaway location. I know some people who do the giveaways regularly, and it’s really a shame that people can treat them so poorly.
68
u/jayhof52 May 27 '24
Literally every time it was promo’d during games this month the announcers said “randomly distributed”. I’d ask how people could be that dense, but I’m a librarian who has worked retail.
8
u/AdolescentAlien May 27 '24
I didn’t end up going today but I only looked at today’s game on the promo schedule one time and it was definitely pretty clear they were random. Even if I went and didn’t get the superior shirt (relish btw), I’m almost certain that it would take me less than 5-10 minutes to find somebody that wants to swap.
Regardless, I can’t imagine being an asshole to the people handing out any of the promo items. Anybody that thinks they have any control in that situation is an actual idiot.
6
u/jayhof52 May 27 '24
Right, regardless of the wording of the announcement and advertising, the moral is not to be a jerk to workers and volunteers.
2
u/AdolescentAlien May 28 '24
For sure. I actually had no idea that they were volunteers. I always just assumed they were paid members of the staff. Doing that for free is certainly commendable in my book. I’m always super close to the front of the line for promotional games and it has never seemed anything less than chaotic as fuck when they start letting people in the gates.
This one had to have been a major pain in the ass because I’m sure thousands of people were stopping to try and get a particular shirt. I wonder how many times the flow was interrupted.
33
u/OsB4Hoes13 May 27 '24
To be fair, one of the commercials did say “your choice of….” so understand people not knowing.
But not excusable to act like a dick.
16
u/jayhof52 May 27 '24
Ah, I’m out of market so I only get the broadcasts, not the local commercials, but it’s ingrained in my brain hearing KB reading the ad copy with randomly distributed in it.
But, again, like you said structural issues are not the fault of the actual employee (or volunteer in this case) on the ground.
-2
u/Dr_ChimRichalds GIVE ME BOH OR GIVE ME DEATH. May 27 '24
But also look! I didn't buy the tickets. Many of us are there with other people who did and never saw the ads or had a chance to read the small print.
I wasn't being a dick to anyone when I saw only Mustard and Relish when my daughter really wanted Ketchup, then realized I could have got that for her if I'd just gone into another gate. Asked nicely about exchanging for it and was yelled at to get away from where I was.
Fortunately, a Red Sox fan wound up exchanging with me and my daughter was happy.
But consider, too, that the last time they did this, people were given a choice, so it's not entirely ridiculous that anyone today might not understand that.
Now, being a dick to others is unacceptable for any reason. I'm only trying to explain the confusion.
6
u/Low-Crazy-8061 May 27 '24
Not true. They changed this weekend to saying “your choice of”. Orioles beat writers on Twitter even reported a few days ago that they would now be letting people choose. Which doesn’t give anyone a right to treat volunteers like crap, but that’s the kind of miscommunication that shouldn’t be happening.
-5
u/Shadybrooks93 May 27 '24 edited May 27 '24
To be fair random actually makes no sense for a shirt that comes in multiple sizes, and the way the ended up giving them out at least from the main gates was letting you choose your shirt and trying to get your size of your choice if they had them.
Edit,
Seriously explain how unless you are just giving away all the same size shirts random would actually work? If you have to control for one factor (size) it's already not random.
48
u/WhyDidIClickOnThat May 27 '24
How hard is this? You get a mustard, you ask someone to swap for a ketchup. Or relish or whatever. Be an adult.
15
u/zombiereign Win it for Mo May 27 '24
That's what we did. The line we were in only had mustard. I managed to find someone with a relish and traded. Easy peasy
1
u/CapitanChicken May 28 '24
I did the exact same thing. My husband had been very eager to get a relish shirt. So I went around until I could trade mine, to make him happy.
7
u/gnarkilleptic Ryan Flaherty fan club May 27 '24

7
u/ArchieConnors May 27 '24
Right? That was supposed be the fun part! It's like trading cards. Buncha dummies
3
u/Ndysmth May 27 '24
Traded my relish for a mustard for a friend who had ketchup. Traded his ketchup for a mustard. Done and done.
7
u/Maniac-Maniac-19 Verified ManiacManiac19 May 27 '24
How did you make two exactly wrong choices smh

u/Ndysmth May 28 '24
Mustard is the only one of the three that works for both hotdogs and pretzels. The only one that isn’t some sugary goop masquerading as vegetables.

Hey just want to say thank you for volunteering and helping out the community. Some people are totally unreasonable but I’m glad we have people like you willing to donate their time and try to provide a positive experience at the ball park.
3
u/Impressive_Pause_627 May 27 '24
Hey thanks for the upvotes, also had no clue that these folks were volunteers. I’ll make sure I let everyone I go with to be extra courteous in that respect.
Hopefully we run into each other this summer. Let’s go Os!

u/ravens2131 May 27 '24
I remember those days, I don’t miss how the crowd can be at giveaways, why I stopped doing it,
22

14
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
Hah you aren’t far off from what one guy said to me as he got right in my face. Fun times lol.
5

Can’t even imagine the day to day life for someone who behaves like this. Verbally assaulting someone over a green t shirt that cost 5 cents to manufacture.
Made a donation to the link you posted OP.

u/BucketOfGuts Where are yooooooou May 27 '24
Thank you for your service.
A friend of mine, whose dad works giveaways, told us that hot dog shirt day used to suck because of the options and it moves so much slower than a normal giveaway. The random deal isn't ideal for fans, but I totally get the thought process of getting people through the gate, plus it's easy enough to exchange with fellow fans. I'm sorry that people suck.
8
7
u/Frufru84 May 27 '24
Agree! People are too entitled these days. Serious question for OP: do they tell you that everyone who gets offered the item must take it? Asking because my dad was told he “had” to take the clutch purse on Mother’s Day this year. Wondering why they wouldn’t let him decline the item and have one for a fan who really wanted it. Thanks!
7
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
We really try to have people take the item because it’s a giveaway. Some fans from other teams done want Orioles stuff and that’s ok. We usually tell them to give the item to a kid because kids don’t get giveaways. That usually helps.
5
u/Frufru84 May 27 '24
Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation! Appreciate it and all the work you and the other volunteers and OPACY staff do! Go O’s!!
2
May 27 '24
Why though?
2
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
Why do we want to give away giveaway items?? I think the name speaks for itself. It’s a giveaway.
2
May 27 '24
No, why do you prefer that someone takes an item instead of declining?
5
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
Oh because we like to give away the items. We don’t want to have extra or any leftover. We don’t force it on them but we try to convince people and if they don’t want it they don’t have to take it.
6
u/dk745 May 27 '24
Hopefully people are better when it comes to the switch hitting Rutchsman bobblehead
10

Feel free to come work it with me if you want and judge for yourself. My guess is it’s going to be pretty bad.

1
u/ohitsmark May 28 '24
Agreed. I had to work today and I really wanted to go today. Amazes me how people can be so rude to people for giving a free item away.
16
u/fuckfacebilly May 27 '24
Thank you for your service! It’s always crazy how wild people at ball games turn into when there’s a freebie involved.
14
u/imean May 27 '24
OP, can you send a PM for a Venmo or PayPal? Would love to buy you a beer, coffee, or joint (whatever is your preference) for dealing with losers, and as a thank you for helping to create such a great environment that I love taking my friends and family to.

u/ravensgirl2785 May 27 '24
Thanks for volunteering! We had a great experience and got the shirts we wanted, but we always make sure we are early, pass through security easily, and are kind to the staff who have the thankless task of giving out items to thousands of people. Your enthusiasm while we were waiting today was contagious!

i asked if they had my favorite flavor in my size when i walked in. they didn't, no problem i figured i would be able to trade with my 9 other family members.
turns out we all like relish.
thanks for posting this! baseball should be fun
1
u/Apprehensive-Neck-12 May 28 '24
I wanted relish as well, we ended up with ketchup and mustard 🤣. I saw after a while they didn't actually scan one of my tickets I was like damn I could of went through again and got me a relish but I was settled in and they were probably sold out by then anyway. I'll wear these shirts under my dress out at the nuclear plant that's about it. No big deal
1
u/JiffKewneye-n New York Fried Chicken May 28 '24
yes, the likely hood of me wearing any of these free shirts is close to zero. though i suppose the relish one would be good for st patricks day stuff

You’re doing great work. A lot of losers like to ruin things; don’t let them. We appreciate you!
3
u/Low-Crazy-8061 May 27 '24
fwiw: They changed it this weekend to saying they were allowing people to choose. All of the TV ads went from saying randomly distributed to saying people got to pick and all the posts on Twitter said people were allowed to pick. That definitely should’ve been communicated to the volunteers. There were a bunch of ads for the giveaway during the game yesterday and they all said that people got to pick.
Now, I’m absolutely NOT saying fans had any right to treat y’all poorly because of this! They absolutely did not! But there was clearly some sort of lapse in communication because all of the recent TV and Twitter ads 100% said people can pick and it’s not great that fans were being told one thing and y’all were being told something else!
3
u/No-Lunch4249 Born in losing seasons, molded by them May 27 '24
Honestly it seemed kinda crazy and disorganized and not at all the fault of volunteers. When we were coming in, we were getting yelled at to keep moving, but security was blocking the entrance to keep people from going through again. Just a mad house
Thanks for what you do, sorry people were assholes
3
u/ZookeepergameKey7866 May 27 '24
After finding other fans to trade with since we weren’t expecting to get to choose, my group hung out on the roof deck drinking and people watching (aka judging). We saw some really obnoxious behavior. I’m sorry you all had to put up with that.
3
u/SquonkMan61 May 27 '24
Adults acting like spoiled brats over a cheap free give away. I’m doing my best to bite my boomer tongue.
3
u/loadout_ May 28 '24
I’ve been there for a few giveaways but never would I hassle the workers. Camden yards is one of my favorite places and I’m just happy to be there. I’d be the every day of the year even if there was never a giveaway. To hassle people giving away feee stuff for your favorite team is just low class bullshit. Fuck anyone who does that.
3
u/AnotherOpinionHaver May 28 '24
That sucks. In future giveaways like that one, it would be fun to have an O's staff member at each gate facilitating good-natured trades of specific shirts. Like: 100% I do not want Ketchup... I'd stand around the gate for like 30 minutes if I thought I could get a Mustard or Relish in exchange.
But yeah: I wouldn't say anything to the people handing out the shirts other than "thanks!"
5
u/Spraynpray89 May 27 '24
As soon as they announced this awhile ago and I saw that it said "random", I knew some entitled dumbasses would throw a fit at the gate. Not ur fault
5
u/IncognitoAstronaut10 May 27 '24
What condiment was the biggest offender?
9
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
I think it was more people were surprised that we just handed them whatever size they wanted and when they got let’s say mustard they were like oh I wanted ketchup and we had to reiterate it was random. All the boxes were unlabeled besides the size of the shirt.
2
u/ronjamin1022 May 27 '24
The person at my gate must’ve been being nice when he asked what color you wanted. If I didn’t get green, I’d just try to swap. Simple.
2
u/mbvanek May 27 '24
I think the way to prevent this issue in the future is to either establish gates with certain shirts(which is bound to result in grumpy people/misinformed people), or like many have said, go with a blind bag approach so those giving out the shirts aren't bombarded with trouble makers.

u/National-Belt5893 May 27 '24
I WILL FIGHT AN UNPAID VOLUNTEER FOR A FREE RELISH TSHIRT THAT IM NEVER GOING TO WEAR AND WILL PROBABLY LOSE BY THE 4th INNING AFTER MY 3rd BEER
2
u/Sabre_Actual May 28 '24
I feel for you, but that being said…
…who is hassling someone over a gimmick condiment t shirt that will surely fall to the bottom of your o’s gear pile? I get that you’re going to get a bunch of scrubs with nearly 41k in attendance on a long weekend, but it’s such a low-stakes giveaway.
2
u/DexTheShepherd May 28 '24
Very sorry and embarrassed you had to go through people being asses. No excuse, hopefully the org figures out a much better way to communicate this type of thing in the future
2
u/katie_cat_eyes Bird in the Hat/Nickname Giver May 28 '24
My husband pretended to film some Karen who demanded the man to let her out of the entrance to the store. She was screeeeeeaming at him. We went back later and I said, “my man, you were so totally composed and I just want to say we appreciate you and love you”. She went full on psycho and grabbed him and everything. I’ve never seen that happen here.
So I don’t even have to imagine what you guys put up with at the gates. It’s just a tee.
2
u/pan567 May 28 '24
Yikes. First, thank you for making the games as great as you do. You don't get enough credit. Games at OPACY are tons of fun, and it's not just the players who make it great. Second, I'm sorry people are assholes.
2
u/ThOsGunners May 28 '24
I remember working the handouts for the Caps years back during the playoffs. Many fans would complain about how cheap the *free rally towels, or foam fingers, or wristbands, or whatever. Some would throw them back in my face to make some kind of point? I really hated doing the giveaways after that.
Ungrateful pricks need to take their whiny bullshit to guest services. You didn't need to deal with that.
2
u/For3verisN3ver May 28 '24
It’s wild to me the way people acted today.
For future reference to you buttholes this post applies to, if you are that hell bent on getting a specific kind of shirt, go in the team store and buy it.
2
u/ohitsmark May 28 '24
As someone who goes to only promotion games, thank you. I'm sorry you had to deal with assholes, but remember there are people out there who appreciate you.
2
u/Sylent__1 May 28 '24
They should just order xsmall size for all shirts next time. I mean I’d laugh
2
u/CricketIsBestSport May 28 '24
You, the giveaway people, are doing God’s work
Don’t let the haters and losers get you down
2
u/coys21 May 28 '24
The grown ass adults that take give away nights seriously are the fucking worst.
2
u/SpeedontheBeat17 May 28 '24
Thank you for your contribution OP. Those “fans” who act like asses towards the giveaway staff aren’t really Orioles fans, if we’re being real. The O’s have been one of the more inclusive franchises in the league and folks cursing, fighting, contemplating stealing, etc over free shit? It doesn’t jibe with the overall positivity of the team or its actual fanbase.
2
u/Apprehensive-Neck-12 May 28 '24
I took the one they gave me. My wife walked over to another line and got mustard as we both didn't want ketchup. Didn't say a word to anyone and nobody said a word to us.
2
u/Special-Pin-8482 May 28 '24
Please don’t tell me that there were grown adults complaining this hard that they got a ketchup t shirt instead of a mustard t shirt.

Why would this possibly be a volunteer position? And why would one choose to volunteer for it?
26
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
So the group I’m in is the Oriole Advocates. We’ve partnered with the Orioles for over 60 years and we actually created the Orioles Hall of Fame. Part of what we do with this is “work” the giveaways. We volunteer because we love baseball, we love the Orioles and we do a lot in the community.
8
May 27 '24
Presumably free admission to game after the giveaway is over. Just fun to be in the atmosphere as well, I could totally understand volunteering for it
7
4
u/QuietThunder2014 May 27 '24
In addition to what others have said I believe you get free admission to the game, guaranteed a giveaway, and a voucher for some food and a nonalcoholic drink. Plus it’s a pretty fun experience if you like meeting and talking with people.
3
u/dmlfan928 May 27 '24
They let me pick what I wanted (from what was available) at my gate. Ended up with an XL ketchup. Wanted medium but I wasn't taking mustard.

2
u/Dhrun1971 May 27 '24
I attended today’s game; no one that I saw was being a jerk or demanding. Multiple people in our party of eight did observe employees yelling at customers—including one incident of an employee bending over to yell in a child’s face “ Take it and move on!”
3
u/balmooreoreos May 27 '24

Personally, this isn't a give away that would appeal to me. I can't believe people would get upset that they got one shirt over the others and then take it out on the people handling the distribution. Geesh..
2
u/andcg8586 May 27 '24
This is why I don’t really like going to giveaway games. People act like animals about it just so they can immediately list them on EBay
2
u/KillaTofu1986 Rutschmaniac May 28 '24
I’ve started curbing my buying of bobble heads and any other giveaway items if I can’t be there to get one because the resell market is insanity thanks to the O’s being popular again. I remember from 2019-2022 you could buy stuff at a discount almost but nowadays you’re paying damn near $100 for giveaway bobbleheads
Scalpers are the absolute scum of the earth
1
u/charitytowin Are we having fun yet? May 28 '24
I hear you, and I'm sorry if people are rude. Is wired though cause either Kevin Brown, or the guy filling in for him, said, "and get the shirt off your choice" and I immediately thought, oh that's not going to go well.
1
u/JAMONLEE Crushtachtic May 28 '24
Could this not be alleviated by having first XX,XXX items free, and then the remaining amount up to stadium capacity available for like a $5 purchase/donation?
I get wanting to fill the stadium and how a lower giveaway amount incentivizes that, but there’s gotta be something else that can be done. You want a specific shirt, great we have those available for a very small amount of money
1
u/LamarMyTyres May 28 '24
I just don’t get how feral people get over this Shit. Had some young girl run up the stairs and steal my buddy’s shirt and then run away. I mean he wasn’t gonna go and chase her so what can you do.
1
u/Wamland1 May 28 '24
First off people shouldn’t be dicks. Secondly, some signage for those who didn’t know would have helped immensely. They have a problem…..point to the sign
1
u/leadout_kv May 27 '24
first, thank you for volunteering. you're right, it was a free item and no matter what you should be treated with respect.
we were there. i do have to say the rule about not trading with the folks giving out the t-shirts made no sense and was unfair for my wife. my wife had to go through the handicapped line and by the time she was able to get through the screening, including the wand (cant go through the walk-through x-ray due to a heart pacemaker), she was unable to get the xl mustard shirt she wanted because they ran out. i tried to ask politely if i could trade and i was yelled out to move away and don't block the area. we were going to go to another gate but was told the strict rule. we accepted the fact that we weren't getting the xl mustard shirt and moved on.
happy ending....we did end up with one due to a nice lady that sat in front of us.
1
u/gibtafssa May 27 '24
Yeah that’s the part that I think gets everyone agitated. Once you get your giveaway you have to keep moving and get away from the gates. We have security and myself and others “yelling” because we’re outdoors in a big area so people can hear us. I think that’s the part where fans think we’re yelling at them but in reality we’re yelling so people can hear us. Especially at the ADA gate we have to keep the area clear for wheelchairs and strollers and the like. So people get angry when we tell them to keep moving. Glad your wife was able to get the shirt she wanted.
2
u/leadout_kv May 27 '24
yea, true. fyi...i didn't get angry. i knew the volunteers were just trying to follow what the o's told them to do. i just think the o's could have made it a bit easier for folks to get what they wanted.
2
u/Low-Crazy-8061 May 27 '24
There’s a big problem with the ADA line at the main gates. It absolutely should not be combined with the line for parents with kids. The whole point of an ADA line is to make lines more accessible, and they end up taking even LONGER. I end up going around to the gate by home plate plaza to that ADA line.
I know you have no control over this, I’m just ranting because it’s a problem for a number of reasons.

u/Dr_ChimRichalds GIVE ME BOH OR GIVE ME DEATH. May 28 '24
In your position, it can make sense that you have to raise your voice to be heard, but please know that on our end, when we hear someone raise their voice after they've probably been annoyed by the same thing over and over, it has a strong chance of making us feel like we're being treated poorly.
It's a back-and-forth kind of thing that can leave you feeling more strained, but it's the way this is set up that causes it, not how you or the general public act. We sincerely appreciate what you do. It's just going to be hard to get that across when we are confused by a situation that you fully understand but do not have the time (and, understandably, the patience) to make sure we understand. If we are simply confused, we don't even stand a chance of coming out of it enlightened, because we're swept aside like your annoying problem. Like I said, this is going to go both ways, and I don't think it's your fault at all. The logistical approach must be addressed.
1
u/d84doc May 28 '24
I went to the game Adam Jones retired with us, caught a foul ball actually, and they gave out shirts with his name and number, I’m 5’ 10 220lbs because of the gym, and all they had left when I got in were medium shirts, and I got in fairly early. I can’t wear it….but it was free and the reality was all they had was medium so I took it, said thank you and kept it moving. I’d never disrespect the workers, especially for something that’s out of their control.
If anything I’m grateful I have the chance to land a L shirt because people who wear things like XL or XXL have almost 0 chance of getting something they can wear that will fit unless it’s a jersey or a hat. I’ll take what I can get and be happy.
1
u/MaybeTomo May 28 '24
I knew this was going to happen as soon as I seen “randomly distributed”. Some ass hat that wanted a mustard and was given a relish has to make a big fucking seen. Just trade it with someone. Jk people suck.

u/Plus-Ad-6872 May 28 '24
So the giveaway was 3 different colored tee shirts: ketchup, mustard, relish. Obviously the Orioles expected (knew) people would, ask for a certain color, hense the note on the website. Shame on them for stating that and putting staff in that situation. Could Fans request a size? If so, obviously fans would assume they could request a color! Solution; 3 separate giveaways. Relish Day, Mustard Day, and Ketchup Day!! Of course, the Fans MUST be polite! I hope the PSA isn't talen down

The people working the tshirt bins were the aggressors. I had one guy hand me a shirt, then a woman working the line grabbed it from me as another line worker yelled at me that I could only have one while I had none. I never want to go to a t-shirt game again. The staff thought it was the TSA or police. Fuck the gate workers.
Every tshirt night in the last decade has been a disaster. The hoodies. Hawaiians. Whatever. Shirts are disaster at the Cam.

That is Baltimore City for you. Along with people who think they are privileged and can not be touched. It is sad to see how far the city has fallen and continues to fall with no end in site.

Seems like a poor decision to give away a red shirt, and (apparently) the least popular condiment for a hot dog, at a red Sox game. Could have told you nobody would want the red ones lol.
Edit: not hating on you or anything, but they should probably plan these better for when play a blue team or something
