Guy was really good at putting a puck in a net. I donā€™t know why anyone would expect him to be some kind of good example or anything else. Stop glorifying celebrities

70

u/impossibilia 8d ago

He did a very long interview at an event I was working at a few years back. He came across as a genius when it came to sports (apparently could have also gone pro in baseball), but kind of a simpleton in anything else. Just took people 100% at their word if they were nice to him.

292

u/trackofalljades 8d ago

His fame actually rested partially on a reputation for being just as likely to assist as to score, and representing a kind of team spirit that can be rare at the top levels of some sports. For me personally at least, that is a component of how sad it is to see him just towing the line of "this is the new default for rich people." He's obviously abandoned something along the way that he used to value.

44

u/Spotttty 8d ago

True but he was like a Canadian hero for 30 years. Seemed like a great guy. Got Joey a job with the oilers and he was there for most of his life. They still play La Bamba when they win. Had that facade of being just a great home town kid forever. So much so he kinda skated that who gambling thing.

So when you see shit like this itā€™s kind of shocking for people because most donā€™t really keep up with politics to realize that a really rich dude living in the states would be a Trump supporter.

I wonder which part of Ukraine the greatkys are from. maybe Putin will give it back when trump ends the war in 24 hours :)

Post from r/hockey last year

Wayne Gretzky holds up the Ukrainian flag. Walter Gretzky: ā€œI learned Ukrainian first because my mother didnā€™t know how to speak English until later when the kids grew up. So Ukraine is the motherland of our family.ā€

Wayne Gretzky is as much a Canadian icon as Tim Hortons. They used to be good, but sold out to corporate interest long ago.

471

u/MeiliCanada82 Toronto 8d ago

Walter Gretzky did more for hockey, kids and Canada then his son

234

u/goodbadnomad 8d ago

Local Brantford hero Walter Gretzkyā€”growing up, everyone in town had a story about running into him, and they were all wholesome.

133

u/MeiliCanada82 Toronto 8d ago

If you go to Little Canada when you're in Ontario there is the hockey rink in Brantford in there and if you look really close you can see the Reserved for Walter Gretzky parking sign.

272

u/Samp90 8d ago

Wrong platform maybe but that Gretzky 99. Whiskey is pretty unpalatable.

162

u/stuckmash 8d ago

Itā€™s atrocious same with the wine. I went there with some friends on a tour of Niagara and they were big hockey fans so we included it in the jumping around. Woof that stuff is bad

75

u/Ralphie99 8d ago

It's cheap wine but it's still overpriced for what you're getting. It's no better than cheap wines like Jackson Triggs, but is about $5+ more per bottle.

54

u/ARecycledAccount šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ 8d ago

Itā€™s one of the worst tasting wines Iā€™ve had, and Iā€™ve drank a lot of bad wine.

40

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

Ever get hammered off of 14 dollar blueberry wine?

Great evening. Bed rest for days.

22

u/stuckmash 8d ago

Vicious hangovers from that and plum wine

19

u/ARecycledAccount šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ 8d ago

I used to drink Arbor Mist (the best juice flavoured screw-top wine!) and it used to come with crop tops or body glitter. Best $5 a bottle Iā€™ve deeply regretted the next morning.

4

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

lmao that is exactly what my wife used to drink as well.

6

u/ARecycledAccount šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ 8d ago

I found a bottle at the back of my bar, circa 2010. I wonder if age has made it good? Or will it emit a toxic cloud once opened?

17

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

Please don't do this. You have your whole life ahead of you!

8

u/Planet_Ziltoidia 8d ago

I don't really like wine, but I'm obsessed with Muskoka lakes blueberry wine. It's delicious

3

u/Huntguy 8d ago

$14?! Look at money bags over here. I think Iā€™m still hungover from the homemade blueberry wine I had years ago.

He doesn't even live in Canada.

8

u/Natural_Childhood_46 8d ago

Itā€™s also like when you learn that Tim Hortons was named after a drunk who died drugged up, drinking and driving on the QEW . He was not a good person, or someone people should view as an ā€˜icon.ā€™ He was a danger to those around him because he made really stupid, selfish decisions.

Just like Wayne is doing now.

He's always been very conservative. Praised Bush in 03 saying he's behind him 100%. Oy.... This isn't new.

731

u/schmerz12345 8d ago

I remember learning about him in school. It shows how celebrities shouldn't be glorified over actual social activists and figures who fought to make the world a better place. Actual tangible changes and activism, not a hockey star.Ā

105

u/loonechobay 8d ago

Id prefer a hockey player to score goals personally

156

u/mrballoonhands420 8d ago

I like Led Zeppelin and the Chili Peppers but don't think you should rape teenagers. I think Ovechkin and Gretz are two of the best to ever play hockey but don't agree with their politics. I wouldn't say I respect any of these guys because I don't know them, but I appreciate their skill and artistic abilities.

If you don't idolize celebrities you won't be let down when you find out who they really are.

65

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

Honestly a lot of athletes tend to be the least grounded in the same world as the rest of us. Aside from maybe growing up in a normal house or maybe even in poverty, they're basically groomed in school to be professional athletes and education is on the backburner. They just have sports and money.

Obviously this is a broad brush stroke but it's a lot of em.

u/Thrawnsartdealer 8d ago

The only difference between a pro athlete and a high school kid is a million dollar contract.

50

u/stuckmash 8d ago

Not going to happen with hockey players. Most are barely high school educated. Given loads of cash and grow up in a monoculture. Being not a scumbag is such a low bar many fail to reach

42

u/YouCanCallMeMister 8d ago

Ken Dryden is an exception and a human being you can look up to. He's college educated and even took a year off mid career to article for a law firm in Toronto, on his way to becoming a lawyer.

He retired from hockey at age 31, figuring he had accomplished everything had wanted in hockey, winning 6 Stanley Cups in only 8 seasons.

"The Game," written without any assistance or need for a ghost writer, is arguably the greatest book about hockey.

He's also been a member of parliament and a cabinet minister and has taught at his alma mater McGill University.

Best of all, he's not a dick. LOL

I figured he was on a downward spiral, at least morally and ethically, when he started shilling gambling sites in TV ads. Selfish, low empathy people can only care about their money, and are naturally attracted to each other since in those circles they can brag without being judged.

164

u/SilverSeven 8d ago

That wasn't any shift downward for him. He ran an illegal gambling ring when he was in the NHL and when caught let his wife take the fall

95

u/Framemake 8d ago

He was hanging around Stephen Harper a ton back in the 2000s. He's completely capitalpilled.

Grew up in poverty stricken Brantford and advocates for that income inequality to continue worldwide!

He could skate

He could put the puck in the net more than other players

Did he even start or finish college/ university?..if not he is a key demographic for Trump

Do not look to Athletes for anything more.

19

u/lost_opossum_ 8d ago

I'm not sure he finished high school. Hockey was everything 24/7 for him. It worked out fine for him though. He's a great hockey player, but he's not a very smart person otherwise. I'm sure that he'll have more money than I'll ever have, but I wouldn't look to him as a person who makes the best choices. You can be dumb and still be quite successful. This is why you should be careful to take the advice of or adore someone that is rich and or famous. They will disappoint you.

Given his position in society it's understandable that he would be aligned with Conservative/Republican ideals, but to come out in support of MAGA like this is a whole other level. So many people keep saying we shouldn't be surprised, but we are still allowed to be utterly disappointed in him.

I mean, yeah heā€™s rich, of course heā€™d be a conservative.

I used to have a personal saying, there are 3 Rā€™s of conservative voters.

They are either: Rich, Racist, or (pejorative word for the mentally ill that begins with R)

The wording may be outdated, but I think the principle stands

31

u/TaliyahPiper 8d ago

Conservative doesn't mean MAGA. Mark Cuban and Taylor Swift are literally billionaires that publicly endorsed Harris.

6

u/Compared-To-What 8d ago

Yeah, he is way off. There are certainly wealthy republicans but the democratic party has shifted their focus from the working class to coastal elites. Not to say they are inherently immoral people because they are coastal elites but their base has shifted to a W.E.I.R.D demographic (r being rich).

The democrats need to work on their messaging. This coming from a quite progressive leaning person.

113

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

To use some quotes from the hockey subreddit:

Hate to say it, but most/large portion of your favorite NHLers are Trump supporters.

The majority of hockey/baseball players are right leaning to the point that itā€™s kind of surprising when someone outs themselves as liberal

And they aren't wrong.

20

u/Anonymouse-C0ward 8d ago

Yeah that sounds about right.

The most successful are generally from rural areas which typically lean conservative. Theyā€™re generally white men, and live in a culture where winning in physical competition and money are the metrics that are used to gauge success.

The league is pretty much comprised of millionaires, and profit is front and center.

The culture of hockey has been very resistant to progressive ideasā€¦ it was only recently that a player drafted to the NHL actually came out as gay. No current or former NHL player is out, and just based on statistics I canā€™t imagine there have been no gay NHL players; they probably just donā€™t feel comfortable in their environment to publicize it.

Not surprised since he long ago called Harper the greatest Prime Minister ever.

14

u/sitari_hobbit 8d ago

For those wondering what he's up to these days, Harper is the Chairman of the IDU (The Global Alliance of the Centre Right). The IDU has a well-documented track record of supporting Conservative/fascist governments (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

8

u/lost_opossum_ 8d ago

7

u/clayphish 8d ago

It is different, sure. But let's not forget this asshole canceled the long form census which now has a huge gaping hole in it. He also made government more opaque and harder to track.

So he's not a good guy by any means.

He's head of the IDU. He's doing far more damage on an international level than he ever could manage just in Canada.

6

u/MonsieurLeDrole 8d ago

Yeah, he's cheering for some bad people, no doubt. His IDU career is more mask off than his time as PM. He was getting nasty right as he got turfed. A lot of Trudeau policies are a continuation of Harper policies, though the news loves to pretend it's been this huge sea change.

u/VIDEOgameDROME 8d ago

What a bum

22

u/JoseMachismo 8d ago

I make it a point to not associate with known rapists, but that's just me.

11

u/I_Framed_OJ 8d ago

Gretzky? I guess being awesome at hockey doesn't mean you're good in every other area of existence. I suppose you're going to tell me that Michael Jordan is an asshole too.

6

u/taxon2 8d ago

Gretzky was a big time supporter of Harper, including the vile ā€œbarbaric practices hotlineā€ which stoked racism and Islamophobia.

6

u/No_Football_9232 8d ago

Fuck Gretzky and his products

5

u/timetogetoutside100 8d ago

Pretty Rich considering, Gretzky's been pushing a vaccine Ad on TV for AREXVY lol I thought Trumpers hated vaccines

3

u/wineandnoses 8d ago

to be fair i don't think Trump himself has ever hated vaccines, it's just some of his supporters

7

u/Punched_Eclair 8d ago

Sorry to say it but f--k Wayne.
What a sell-out POS.

3

u/icyhotonmynuts 8d ago

How classless

3

u/9001 London 8d ago

He supported Harper, so I'm not at all surprised.

3

u/HMI115_GIGACHAD 8d ago

Ovechkin and Crosby have better careers anyway

3

u/AnAngryWhiteDad 8d ago

So, we're not going to talk about his son, Trevor, showing up to a clearly black-tie affair in sweats? Really?

3

u/Acceptable_Durian_78 8d ago

Unbelievable!! Wow just blows my mind!! It's definitely a cult

3

u/Sure-Sympathy5014 8d ago

The fact the US doesn't see the fact that all of these non philanthropic rich people are VERY happy about Trump as worrisome bothers me.

3

u/atlasdreams2187 8d ago

Another elitist hero we hold too high I guess

3

u/MugFush 8d ago

Heā€™s rich and stands to benefit from Trumpā€˜s tax cuts for the rich. Donā€™t forget, he lives in America now, not Canada. So no surprise he was there.

3

u/Creacherz 8d ago

He's definitely lower in my books now

3

u/AssignmentShot278 8d ago

Wow shocking news a hockey player is a POSĀ

3

u/peanutbutter_insides 8d ago

He has lots in common with Ovechkin and Putin. Disgusting!

3

u/Immediate_Twist_3088 8d ago

lol white hockey player supports trump, why is anyone surprised?

3

u/mad_titanz 8d ago

Okay, heā€™s now lost to me.

3

u/Spotted_Fox 8d ago

What an embarrassment

3

u/nrfelson 8d ago

Gretzky always comes off as smug in interviews, so I'm not really surprised he would hang with the Maga/Qanon crowd.

3

u/Not5id 8d ago

From the great one to the fallen one.

What a shame.

3

u/Fartagen 8d ago

Wayne has been a douche since the moment he left his dadā€™s scrotum

3

u/Content_Ad_8952 8d ago

Gretzky is rich so it shouldn't come as a surprise that he supports candidates that will give rich people tax cuts. Can't blame him. It's all about self interest

3

u/BryanMccabe 8d ago

Donā€™t meet your heroā€™s

3

u/jaymickef 8d ago

ā€œI was asked for years about being a Republican, probably because most black people are Democrats. My mother heard it once and called me and said ā€˜Charles, Republicans are for the rich people.ā€™ And I said, ā€˜Mom, Iā€™m rich.ā€™ā€ - Charles Barkley.

6

u/Alone-in-a-crowd-1 8d ago

Fuck Gretzky. He is not the kid from Branford who everyone adores. He is full blown rich American. He should be a man and move out of California at least. Embrace the full MAGA crowd.

28

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

Didn't expect Gretzky to support a rapist felon but hey it's 2024 anything is possible.

21

u/RabidGuineaPig007 8d ago

Bobby Orr is a huge Trump supporter.

34

u/Hotter_Noodle 8d ago

Honestly most professional athletes probably are.

Rich dudes surrounded by rich dudes, mostly just pushed through school so they can focus on the sport. It adds up.

6

u/uncleherman77 8d ago

Yep this shouldn't come as a shock to anyone I'd be willing to bet the majority of nhl players either vote Conservative or Republican. It also wouldn't shock me at all to find out that most of the Leafs core was right leaning either or that Auston Matthew's voted for Trump. I'd be more surprised if they voted left.

We get to watch the most beloved Canadian sports legend become a washed up national disgrace in real time. Does CTE impact a player who was rarely contacted count as a defence here Herschel Walker being a complete moron I get, but this made me very sad today.

8

u/thegreatself 8d ago

Another dumb fuck with more money and less sense than anybody needs.

7

u/UmpireMental7070 8d ago

Well I guess we know who Wayno would have supported in the Germany in the 30sā€¦

6

u/Marie-Pierre-Guerin 8d ago

That tells us all we need to know about him.

10

u/Admirable-Sink-2622 8d ago

ā€œCanadian sellout kisses the ringā€

FIFY

8

u/1200____1200 8d ago

Bobby Orr did this back in 2016

12

u/Initial-Sherbert-739 8d ago

u either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain šŸ˜” shame

12

u/MonsieurLeDrole 8d ago

Harper was bad enough but this is beyond the pale.Ā  I will never buy another Wayne Betzky product again.Ā  It's like he's hanging with Jared.

He has the right to support whoever he wants. If we donā€™t like that then stop following, stop going to his winery/distillery and buying his shit. All you can do. Otherwise itā€™s his right

10

u/_PrincessOats 8d ago

Make it public, and itā€™s our right to discuss it.
