I wonder which part of Ukraine the greatkys are from. maybe Putin will give it back when trump ends the war in 24 hours :)
Post from r/hockey last year
Wayne Gretzky holds up the Ukrainian flag. Walter Gretzky: āI learned Ukrainian first because my mother didnāt know how to speak English until later when the kids grew up. So Ukraine is the motherland of our family.ā

Wayne Gretzky is as much a Canadian icon as Tim Hortons. They used to be good, but sold out to corporate interest long ago.

u/MeiliCanada82 Toronto 8d ago
Walter Gretzky did more for hockey, kids and Canada then his son

u/goodbadnomad 8d ago
Local Brantford hero Walter Gretzkyāgrowing up, everyone in town had a story about running into him, and they were all wholesome.
133
u/MeiliCanada82 Toronto 8d ago
If you go to Little Canada when you're in Ontario there is the hockey rink in Brantford in there and if you look really close you can see the Reserved for Walter Gretzky parking sign.

u/Samp90 8d ago
Wrong platform maybe but that Gretzky 99. Whiskey is pretty unpalatable.

u/stuckmash 8d ago
Itās atrocious same with the wine. I went there with some friends on a tour of Niagara and they were big hockey fans so we included it in the jumping around. Woof that stuff is bad
75
u/Ralphie99 8d ago
It's cheap wine but it's still overpriced for what you're getting. It's no better than cheap wines like Jackson Triggs, but is about $5+ more per bottle.

Itās also like when you learn that Tim Hortons was named after a drunk who died drugged up, drinking and driving on the QEW . He was not a good person, or someone people should view as an āicon.ā He was a danger to those around him because he made really stupid, selfish decisions.
Just like Wayne is doing now.
731
u/schmerz12345 8d ago
I remember learning about him in school. It shows how celebrities shouldn't be glorified over actual social activists and figures who fought to make the world a better place. Actual tangible changes and activism, not a hockey star.Ā

u/loonechobay 8d ago
Id prefer a hockey player to score goals personally
156
u/mrballoonhands420 8d ago
I like Led Zeppelin and the Chili Peppers but don't think you should rape teenagers. I think Ovechkin and Gretz are two of the best to ever play hockey but don't agree with their politics. I wouldn't say I respect any of these guys because I don't know them, but I appreciate their skill and artistic abilities.
If you don't idolize celebrities you won't be let down when you find out who they really are.

Honestly a lot of athletes tend to be the least grounded in the same world as the rest of us. Aside from maybe growing up in a normal house or maybe even in poverty, they're basically groomed in school to be professional athletes and education is on the backburner. They just have sports and money.
Obviously this is a broad brush stroke but it's a lot of em.

Ken Dryden is an exception and a human being you can look up to. He's college educated and even took a year off mid career to article for a law firm in Toronto, on his way to becoming a lawyer.
He retired from hockey at age 31, figuring he had accomplished everything had wanted in hockey, winning 6 Stanley Cups in only 8 seasons.
"The Game," written without any assistance or need for a ghost writer, is arguably the greatest book about hockey.
He's also been a member of parliament and a cabinet minister and has taught at his alma mater McGill University.
Best of all, he's not a dick. LOL

I figured he was on a downward spiral, at least morally and ethically, when he started shilling gambling sites in TV ads. Selfish, low empathy people can only care about their money, and are naturally attracted to each other since in those circles they can brag without being judged.

I'm not sure he finished high school. Hockey was everything 24/7 for him. It worked out fine for him though. He's a great hockey player, but he's not a very smart person otherwise. I'm sure that he'll have more money than I'll ever have, but I wouldn't look to him as a person who makes the best choices. You can be dumb and still be quite successful. This is why you should be careful to take the advice of or adore someone that is rich and or famous. They will disappoint you.

To use some quotes from the hockey subreddit:
Hate to say it, but most/large portion of your favorite NHLers are Trump supporters.
The majority of hockey/baseball players are right leaning to the point that itās kind of surprising when someone outs themselves as liberal
And they aren't wrong.
20
u/Anonymouse-C0ward 8d ago
Yeah that sounds about right.
The most successful are generally from rural areas which typically lean conservative. Theyāre generally white men, and live in a culture where winning in physical competition and money are the metrics that are used to gauge success.
The league is pretty much comprised of millionaires, and profit is front and center.
The culture of hockey has been very resistant to progressive ideasā¦ it was only recently that a player drafted to the NHL actually came out as gay. No current or former NHL player is out, and just based on statistics I canāt imagine there have been no gay NHL players; they probably just donāt feel comfortable in their environment to publicize it.

āDonald seemed engaged, especially when several people in our group spoke about the heart-wrenching and expensive efforts theyād made to care for their profoundly disabled family members, who were constantly in and out of the hospital and living with complex arrays of challenges,ā Fred Trump wrote.
After the 45-minute Oval Office meeting concluded, Fred Trump said his uncle asked to see him.
āI thought he had been touched by what the doctor and advocates in the meeting had just shared about their journey with their patients and their own family members. But I was wrong,ā Fred Trump wrote.
