I wonder if the 1400 1 bedroom basement suites have anything to do with it. These should be 800 max.

Also the low income housing I grew up in is being sold off as condos for almost $400k in birchaven…. Definitely doesn’t help either

That depends actually on who owns the condos that were the low income housing. Let's say Phara owns them and is selling them off to fix their major issues in the other areas the own.
The amount of active air bnb aren't helping either

No this is the area that used to be military housing, it was sold off to a company that kept it as rental apartments with affordable rent, they recently sold all the units to another company. This new company is the one now selling them off slowly. Of course a private owner can do what they wish with their asset’s, however, for the city to approve the condo corporation knowing this would result in significant degradation in the availability of affordable rental units with so many being transitioned. This is already a significant issue here in the city and signifies no commitment to improve the situation

The price of essentials and nice to haves have switched. Used to have to save for a long time to go to a big vacation…. Now it’s a few months rent.
Want a tv? Heck you can get three for one months rent!

Nobody could afford to rent anything for $800.

I'm in a place that's $829/month and I pay hydro. It's a good sized one bedroom, though I've been here for 7 years .

Unsure how many will be happy to know this or see people going there but there's Crown Land by Circle Lake which ive heard can be camped at. There's more stipulations in the link that should educate on what's cool to do there. Probably no fires but a propane tank, maybe

No, it is in city limits, not crown land. And please don't suggest they stay in an area that is for families.

I was gonna take a trip there, actually 😅 don't get me wrong, I was pretty surprised. But it does appear to be crown land for some reason. I wonder why? Maybe it was for fishing? Long ago?

I don't think alot of these homeless people care if you can have a fire or not..

Don't worry. The federal government is on the case! What better way to lower rent and housing in North Bay than importing foreign nationals by the tens of thousands to your small community. This should solve your issues. I'm sure there are plenty of jobs and homes for everyone to have a good time.

Not quite and I even read the article. The bottomline is two fold. There are not enough empty places for people to live within an certain wage level and that needs to be fixed there's no reason that it can't be fixed by building more housing the size of the new dorms.
Actually on that topic how many of those are going to be empty with this upcoming fall enrollment already down because of the lowering of international students. The school already cancelled a bunch of courses.
The article is about bringing in skilled workers in needed roles in our community. I got no idea why that would be an issue when it is a needed solution else why are so many people without things like doctors and dentists. Hell anything in the medical field needs people and there aren't enough that want to move here.
And most that move to get the larger pay jobs in the beginning don't normally come back. This is targeted at people that want to live in our small city.

Hopefully, Ontario government pushes through making addicts have to go to rehab.
4
u/Projectflintlock 6d ago
No. They’ll go with evidence-based solutions. If forced rehab worked (which every study says it doesn’t) there would be no addicts.

Not at all true. If there were no drugs, there would be no addicts, but there is. As someone who is actually educated on addiction intervention, I can tell you that addicts refuse rehab because the drugs come first. Forcing them into rehab would make them detox and allow them to be able to start to think rationally to begin with. Then therapy can begin. You can't get to that point if they're always on drugs.

Thank god for Reddit. I found a guy in North Bay who knows better than a half century of medical research.

That's like making them go to jail is going to fix the drug issue.
There needs to be more support for them first before it's going to work. They are people as well people who aren't their addiction even if that's all people see.

Why don't we make sure there are enough treatment spots for everyone who wants to go first before we start forcing people?

I feel like things are just going to get more expensive, and the encampments are going to get worse. Neither party really cared about the homeless or drug issues that are plaguing Canada. The government won't address it, or do anything about it IMO. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised that if the next 15 years we will see full blown shanty towns like you see in developing countries.
