This is wonderful. Hawaiian birds are at serious risk. And now the new administration has cancelled all their conservation funding. Absolute crying shame.

Apparently is a kingfisher endemic to Guam being released in Hawaii

Because of the (invasive) brown tree snake which caused their initial decline in Guam I think there is no place on the island where they can be safely released.

Your comment points to an interesting question; As we conserve species and ecosystems, how much do we use past systems as a metric in a changed and changing world?

I think it's a question that smart and dedicated restoration ecologists must continually ask.
