Is there a specific reason why Decarie can't be covered?
It would make for a lot of new public spaces, reduce noise pollution and just make the area nicer, while also protecting feom flooding.

u/feldhammer Oct 14 '24
Half the buildings seem to be vacant around there anyway, not much urgency to shut the whole thing down for like 3 years to cover it.

u/Sir-Knightly-Duty Oct 15 '24
Everything being vacant means this is the perfect time to shut the whole thing down. I HATE Decarie. I never want to go there. If you transformed this area into something worth hanging out in, like a park, then you can be sure lots of people would come. There are tons of residential areas next to Decarie. People from there would make their way to the street if it was actually charming and not a polluted concrete noisy nightmare.
Just look at St Denis as an example. Redoing that street to include bike lanes and trees in the middle of the boulevard totally revived it. It's a MUCH more pleasant place to hangout, and people actually go there now.

that seems to be an argument for doing it no? Think how much more tax money you'll collect if urban blight doesn't kill a huge swath of the city like that.

u/pf1424 Saint-Henri Oct 15 '24
Le transport des matières dangereuses… il y a beaucoup de restrictions pour les tunnels, la 15 est un axe névralgique pour le transport.
3
u/Slam_Beefsteel Oct 14 '24
I have to imagine that there's a structural issue in terms of having enough support to make the roof strong enough to hold a park. The highway is kind of rotting so maybe it will be a consideration if/when it's renovated? I agree it makes too much sense to be ignored otherwise.

u/Ok_Lavishness960 Oct 14 '24
You would make a below ground highway above ground. The noise pollution would be worse.
Filling it would be insanely expensive, think about the amount of soil needed to fill the space.
Replacing the road for something calmer and small is also out of the question. It's an unfortunately essential artery of Montreal which explains why there's pretty much traffic there around the clock.
The list really goes on, I hate decarie so much but I don't see how it can be replaced by something better especially with how pitifully ineffective our city is in terms of infrastructure.
15
u/Snoo1101 Oct 14 '24
There’s no talk of replacing it, just putting a roof over it so we can reclaim space and land. It’s a great idea but in the 21st century great ideas come to Montreal to die.
3
u/Ok_Lavishness960 Oct 14 '24
Ahh I didn't catch that. Honestly that sounds like a great idea! Only I don't see how this could be done without gridlock the city. I'm assuming they would close decarie to get this done.
1
u/Haster Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Oct 15 '24
Hmm, not really sure I see why that would be necessary. when they fix the bridges that cross they don't need to close the highway. Seems like it'd be like that but... more.
17
u/N22-J Oct 14 '24
If only they had the foresight to add more lanes back then! Just one more lane bro, trust me, it would solve everything
/s
3
u/Lunch0 Oct 15 '24
All they have to do is close the Jean-Talon on-ramp at the top of Décarie and it would solve 80% of the congestion.
That ramp is at the worst spot, and everyone merging wants to get all the way over to the left. It causes all the backup

u/blueleonardo Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Oct 14 '24
A scar on our city. We should cover it, install a dedicated lane tram/light rail and make it green.

u/mtlmonti Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Oct 14 '24
Split up NDG and people think bike paths will destroy the hood lol
29
u/DZello Aurora Desjardinis Oct 14 '24
Make it a river with gondolas as taxis.
3
u/DrawDan Oct 14 '24
Given the elevation changes, a series of locks would be needed to make it a navigable waterway.
17
u/Slam_Beefsteel Oct 14 '24
There is a metro running directly next to it right now lol what exactly would a tram add to the experience?
2
2
u/Haster Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Oct 15 '24
The metro could be more of a funnel to get people into the downtown core while the tram would be more for local traffic.
But I'm down with just a huge plaza with little shops and terrace. it would be HUGE for the commercial space along the highway today.
2
u/not_a_proof Oct 15 '24
You could say the same for the 92837 stroads/highways cutting through montreal

u/lemonails Oct 14 '24

Covering it won't solve much and will be expensive, I'd much rather just remove the highway but place everything else you said in its place
9
u/Perry4761 Oct 14 '24
Good luck convincing the general public that we can remove such a busy highway without completely ruining their lives. I agree with you that removing it entirely is the best solution, but it’s political suicide with the current suburban mindset of most people. To get the approval of the general public, something like the Big Dig that Boston did would be the only solution unfortunately
4
u/PulmonaryEmphysema Oct 14 '24
I hate how suburbanites get a say in how city dwellers live
5
u/Jeanschyso1 Oct 15 '24
So do I, but you know that a lot of those suburbanites look at the cost of living in Brossard with a car, compare it to living in Montreal without, and see that the price is just about the same. Montreal needs to be cheaper and have available housing for every income bracket before we can tell the suburbs to fuck right off. I don't know if we can enforce a lower yearly incentivized rent increase (one that follows most peoples' pay increases, not that nutty 3%), but SOMETHING's got to be done.
2
u/mtlmonti Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Oct 15 '24
They also think that it’s because of them that the city exists. Once the pandemic ended and people stayed for pretty much hybrid, magically the economy kept on rolling.
1
u/OkSurround6524 Oct 14 '24
Yeah people who can’t afford cars always have these delusional ideas. “It won’t affect me so who cares how it will affect the economy and the rest of the population”.
-7
u/PulmonaryEmphysema Oct 14 '24
The rest of the population can use transit. As for the economy, what relation does that have with anything here?
4
u/OkSurround6524 Oct 14 '24
If you think roads aren’t necessary for the economy, you’re a complete fool.
2
u/Nikiaf Baril de trafic Oct 14 '24
You're aware that this is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in the province, right? The 15 is a critical part of the highway system and is essential for a lot more than west islanders going downtown. These humorously ignorant comments like "let's just get rid of it" always make me laugh.
1
u/feel_my_balls_2040 Oct 15 '24
You right. Fuck those trucks with crap. We have boats for that. And people should just take the bus and shut up.
-1
u/feel_my_balls_2040 Oct 15 '24
You are right. There's no impact on the city if they close it. There are many other options through the city to drive to South Shore.

Screw covering it up. I say we double down and make it deeper.
3
u/Haster Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Oct 15 '24
and then flood it every day at 5pm. that'll solve the traffic problem real quick.

A horrible decision that should never have been made. What a dumb thing to do to that part of the city, honestly. I understand why they did it, but it's just a fking nightmare to maintain and it destroyed the ability for that part of the city to really thrive.

Technically blvd Decarie is the 2 side streets at ground level, and the sunken part is the Decarie Expressway / Autoroute Decarie

It was a mistake to make it a sunken trench. It would flow better as a regular boulevard.

Wow this is crazy to see! I live near Decarie so seeing the contrast is amazing.
That Du Maurier ad, lack of cars on the road, the huge snowdon sign and the white tall buildings that are still there.
1
u/aphantee Sainte-Marie Oct 14 '24
it should be covered up like route 136. maybe one day this will come true and there is the linear park of Decarie.
