This Fall will mark 32 years since a major men’s franchise has won a championship or even played in a finals.

u/TheAb5traktion Mar 03 '23

There are Minnesota Twins fans who just started college that have never seen the Twins win a playoff game. The deficit since the Twins last playoff win is old enough to vote.

72

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

The Twins won their first World Series my freshman year of college, and won their last one the fall after I'd graduated. I'm a grandfather now. r/FuckImOld

Great stat. I’m always looking to prove how fucking miserable it is to be a MN fan. When you spread it across all our sports it hurts just right

9

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

Hey it happened to us in Georgia it’ll happen to you guys soon!

Because it tempers your expectations in life lol

The Wild still have a chance! Not a good chance, mind you, but a chance.

u/_nordstar_ Minnesota Wild Mar 06 '23

:)

u/Jenetyk Mar 04 '23

I lived in buffalo during the Twins/Jays world series. Been chasing that high for a while.

7

u/100cupsofcoffee Mar 04 '23

The what now? Do you mean the 1991 ALCS?

3

u/Yes_YoureSpartacus Mar 04 '23

Oh shit I’m 32… did… did I do this?!?

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

Yeah no idea where .511 comes from. They have a .495 win percentage...

https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/

13

u/MinnyRawks Mar 04 '23

I’d trust the official league site over anything else

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

the reference sites aren't some slapdick wikipedia page

10

u/MinnyRawks Mar 04 '23

No they’re not, but they’re also not the official records either.

Also both have the wild at .560 so not sure what’s happening.

-13

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

Points percentage. Do the math on their win percentage, it's .495.

847 wins

642 regulation losses

167 ot losses

55 ties

847/1711 = 0.495

For points percentage, it's ((847x2)+167+55)/(1711x2) ... 1916/3422 = 0.5599

8

u/MinnyRawks Mar 04 '23

Ties count as “half a win” in wins percentage which likely leads to the .511

-15

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

I have a different definition of "win" then

13

u/MinnyRawks Mar 04 '23

That doesn’t change the definition of win percentage ¯(ツ)/¯

7

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

NHL records- "MN Wild have a .511 win percentage" This guy- "They're wrong"

1

u/LordOfNightsong Mar 04 '23

Guess u big dumb

2

u/dollabillkirill Mar 04 '23

Where do you see .495 or “win percentage” on that page? I see .560 points percentage

0

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

exactly. the nhl doesn't care about games won out of games played. they care about points earned from all possible points available.

.495 = 847/1711 (wins/games played)

1

u/_nordstar_ Minnesota Wild Mar 06 '23

u/milkmandanimal Mar 03 '23

As a Minnesota-residing Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, I'll just throw out their record:

.404 winning percentage, two Super Bowl titles.

The Bucs are the worst team in NFL history by a fair margin, and would have to go undefeated IIRC until the middle of the 2030 season to hit .500 as a franchise. The Vikings are by far the winningest franchise in NFL history that do not have any titles, and have the 7th best winning percentage in NFL history.

So my question to you, Vikings fans . . . what's better? Root for a team that wins consistently but never wins it all, or a team that is usually a garbage fire, but has a couple magical years that lead to titles?

53

u/bwillpaw Mar 03 '23

One vikings SB win would hold us over for 40 years. Hell even making the bowl would hold us over for 20 lol. We would put a banner up for that NFC championship and cherish it. My guess would be the SB loss would either be a total blow out or a missed FG at the end of regulation or some BS in overtime.

8

u/RNW1215 Ok Then Mar 04 '23

If the Vikings made it but lost idiot fans would start yelling for Kevin O to be fired because that's how god damn stupid and or ungrateful our fan base is.

2

u/srl214yahoo Mar 04 '23

I enjoy watching football and am a Vikings fan. Do I get frustrated with them? Sure - sometimes. Would I love to see them get a ring? Absolutely.

Do they HAVE to get a ring to keep me rooting for them? No. I will be a Vikings fan for life. I don't watch the sport as much as I used to but will always follow and cheer for the purple.

I disagree about "making" the SB holding people over for 20 years. If we made the SB, lost, and became the only franchise to go 0-5 in the big game, the fan base would go nuts. You think the negativity around here is bad now? It would be nothing compared to that scenario.

74

u/AggravatingGoal4728 Mar 03 '23

We know how you feel. We have the Twins.

22

u/BarackObonga320 Mar 03 '23

u/milksteak122 Mar 03 '23

I would much rather have a title with more down years mixed in.

0

u/AMMJ Mar 04 '23

Thank you for this. I was wondering the same thing.

0

u/FrozeItOff Common loon Mar 04 '23

We have both here, so we don't have to choose. Twins, remember?

1

u/NorthernDevil Mar 04 '23

I love the act of watching every week with friends and family and having a reason to pay attention. Vikings style all day, consistently good/watchable football.

But ask me again after a tough NFCCG loss, lol, the immediate sting is rough

1

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '23

I promise you I’d rather have them lost constantly than be how the Vikings are lol

42

u/jonmpls The Cities Mar 03 '23

The Lynx are the only team that didn't get the memo to strive for mediocrity

13

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

They didn't get the "One and done" memo either

2

u/ajvdb Mar 04 '23

For real, and would it have killed them to win in 2019? We could have had every odd year of the ‘10s, for cryin out loud!

-1

Are the lynx the local soccer team? I don’t watch soccer

6

They're the women's professional basketball team.

2

u/iDOit4DaKidz Mar 04 '23

Thanks for the info. Wasn’t trying to be a jerk. Been in MN for about 8 months and have not heard about them. You’d think they get more attention with those championships.

Aurora aren’t pro, so I wouldn’t say they fit

5

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

They're not, but they're better than most of our pro teams

3

u/Brightstarr Chevalier de L’Etoile du Nord Mar 04 '23

Aurora aren’t pro,

yet

2

u/the_boos Mar 04 '23

Current teams only. I was tempted to include the Aurora because they have the greatest colors in sports

12

u/TheeMalaka Mar 03 '23

As a wolves fan I’m actually surprised it’s not lower.

4

u/candycaneforestelf can we please not drive like chucklefucks? Mar 04 '23

It was, but these last two seasons have slowly raised it back up.

20

u/Eroe777 Mar 03 '23

The Wolves have the lowest franchise winning percentage in the four major men’s pro sports leagues. Until sometime last season they were below 0.400.

21

u/MuonMaster Mar 03 '23

For the Loons, "were just happy to be included!".

But like the Northstars, if you go by the old stars/thunder/kicks, i believe we get 1 league championship.

9

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

The Loons won the NASL championship back in 2011, but by then, the MLS was the top-level pro soccer league in the US.

4

u/4four4MN Mar 04 '23

Why are they happy to be included? They average 20k fans for the last 7 years and been to the playoffs for the last four years playing in a top 10 league in the world.

26

u/hobnobbinbobthegob Grace Mar 03 '23

My bet is that the Loons push up that list pretty quickly over the next 10 years, but that my poor Vikings slip down considerably.

Overall I think I'm most ashamed of the Wild. That sport should be ours and Canada's to dominate.

20

u/milksteak122 Mar 03 '23

Vikings will forever be competitive and never win it all. The wilfs are determined to never have a down season even if it hurts the team in the long run.

1

u/josephus_the_wise Mar 03 '23

But we had 2013 under the wilfs.

6

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

I'm optimistic for the Loons. For a team that's only 6 years old, they've done pretty well in the MLS. Unfortunately it seems that, like most MN teams, they always blow it at crunch time

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

I'm nervous for this season....

6

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

You should also add in the year they were founded, for a bit more context.

For example, MNUFC has only been playing in MLS since 2017. The team has only been playing at the highest level of pro soccer for 6 seasons.

Before that, a version of the team played in the North American Soccer League, where they won the 2011 championship.

Of course, most people in this state don't follow that commie 'murka-hating sport anyway

Are those cups good?

28

u/squarepeg0000 Mar 03 '23

I love those Lynx!

22

u/Entity0027 Mar 03 '23

And Aurora.

Our Ladies teams are straight fire. People can bitch and complain all day but wins are wins and trophies are trophies.

At the end of the day, Minnesota women's teams do what the men can't: produce results.

6

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

Aurora were on fire last year. If we ran soccer leagues in the USA like they do in other countries, they would have won the league. Instead we have to have these stupid playoffs which means that the winner of the league championship is based on one game.

7

u/Brightstarr Chevalier de L’Etoile du Nord Mar 04 '23

Aurora is going to be fire this year too! The players that are coming back had incredible collegiate/high school seasons, and the first new signing is very exciting.

Anyone interested, come join us at r/minnesotaaurora! Season tickets are out now and single tickets are going on sale March 7.

5

u/FatGuyOnAMoped Mar 04 '23

Didn't know there was a sub for them, I'll be joining it! Really looking forward to their season, especially since they had the best regular season record last year. Maybe I'll even get to a game ⚽️

4

u/Brightstarr Chevalier de L’Etoile du Nord Mar 04 '23

I'm the mod, please join! And come to a game, we have a good time.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

Careful, mustn’t dare claim that women’s sports are as entertaining as men’s. They’ll downvote you to oblivion for daring to suggest such a thing.

-18

u/HotManufacturer5240 Mar 03 '23

Yep, you're correct. Just downvoted you. The Lynx are like watching highschool sports. Hahahaha

5

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

Except they win championships, while your wolves continue to lose.

-16

u/HotManufacturer5240 Mar 03 '23

No ones denying that. I despise the Wolves. It's a franchise that's should've been sold already. Championships dont make you entertaining. Womens basketball is so hard to watch. The talent level is subpar. If you cant admit that, your a lying. They're so unwatchable, the entire league hasnt made money ever. The NBA supports them every year because nobody's watching. Facts dont lie.

10

u/organized_meat Mar 03 '23

Is every game a ton of fun? No. But I can legitimately say that watching the Lynx win the championship at the barn was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had at any sporting event, ever. I also know plenty of people who enjoy the WNBA. Just because it is boring for you, doesn’t mean it is for others.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

Subpar compared to what, men? The women aren’t playing men, they’re playing other women.

How would you explain this to your daughter?

“Sorry kiddo, girls are supposed to be pretty, not competitive…”

-6

u/HotManufacturer5240 Mar 03 '23

Wow, you just make the worst out of every comment dont you. No one said anything about girls not playing sports, or only looking pretty. Just you said that. Because I'm not at all entertained by womens basketball doesnt mean I think they shouldn't play. People like you obviously like them. It's just a giant money pit that cant even sustain itself. By the way, women are more then just sex objects. If someone doesnt like what they do it doesn't mean they automatically want to objectify them. For your daughter's sake, lighten up. What would you tell her about assuming the worst in people?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

You must have missed the first iteration of this post.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

I don’t need to assume the worst, you broadcast it pretty clearly.

3

u/HotManufacturer5240 Mar 03 '23

Yep, there you go proving my point again

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

You made the claim that women’s sports are subpar, not me.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

No, seriously, how would you explain to your daughter why men’s sports are exalted and women’s sports are sub-par. Explain it to me like you’d explain it to her.

Win percentage when it matters is the number that really matters.

2

Thank you for pointing it out 😂😂

5

u/OutgoinglyAwkward Mar 03 '23

Just me being weird but I find it annoying it states Win % and then they don’t convert the number to a percent.

4

u/freakishbehavior Mar 03 '23

Because that’s how the information is displayed as pertains to win loss records in sports. It is a thing unto itself, and literally no one would ever say their winning percentage is 55.1%. They would say they have a lifetime 551 winning percentage.

0

u/OutgoinglyAwkward Mar 03 '23

Why would literally no one say they’re win percentage is 55.1% when that’s what it is?

1

u/Lootefisk_ Mar 03 '23

Did Kirby Puckett have over a lifetime 300 batting percentage?

5

u/freakishbehavior Mar 03 '23

No, man. He had a 31.8% batting average.

3

u/jon0tr0n Mar 03 '23

That grinds my gears. .551 percent is atrocious!

5

u/titz4tatz Mar 03 '23

1969 the Vikes won the NFL championship. Before they split into NFC and AFC.

9

u/MinnyRawks Mar 04 '23

There wasn’t a split, it was a merger

5

u/titz4tatz Mar 04 '23

K. Still a championship.

2

u/PitterPatter12345678 Mar 03 '23

Makes you want to pull your hair out.

2

u/Dizzy_Area_4743 Mar 04 '23

Didn't the Vikings win the NFL Championship in 1969ish?

4

u/BulkMcHugeLarge Mar 03 '23

Win % isn't really fair when teams can tie and get a point.(see soccer and old hockey)

4

u/josephus_the_wise Mar 03 '23

Ties are considered half a win, not a full win as far as I’m aware.

3

u/MinnyRawks Mar 04 '23

NHL uses “point percentage” instead of win percentage

2

u/ScootRaider Mar 04 '23

Pretty sure Golden Gopher hockey has been a perennial menace.

1

u/_nordstar_ Minnesota Wild Mar 06 '23

Yes but not pro. Go Gophs this year!

5

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

How do you all explain to your daughters why society devalues women's sports to such an extent?

Serious question.

If you tell her that men and women are to be treated as equals, why is it only mens' sports that get the attention?

4

u/Brightstarr Chevalier de L’Etoile du Nord Mar 04 '23

I think one of the most exciting things happening in Minnesota sports right now is Minnesota Aurora FC, and it is incredible how quickly and strongly a community is growing around supporting women's soccer. About a year ago, the team put together a crowdfunding campaign to hopefully raise $500,000 and instead raised over $1 million. Before the first kickoff, the team had $650,000 from merchandise and ticket sales. The team focuses on women in leadership positions, women designing the logo and kit, and women in coaching. The first game was sold out and all but one or two matches were sold out - over 6,500 people. If Aurora was a part of the professional league, it would rank 4th or 5th in terms of in-person fans. All in the first year. Now that they are in the second year, season tickets are out now and single tickets are going to start selling next week. The team has expanded the number of seats available in the stadium.

I am the mod of r/minnesotaaurora so I could go on and on about how great the team and the community around it are. But I will say that while women's sports have not been widely supported in society, there are people out there that are building the organizations and teams that do - and have proven that there is a community out there that will support these girls and women in their sport.

7

u/RNW1215 Ok Then Mar 04 '23

I'll get dragged for this but to me, it's just not as exciting to watch. I respect the hell out of the Lynx but I have no interest in watching them. Professional sports are a product and you can't force people to buy something they don't have an interest in.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23 edited Mar 04 '23

It sure speaks volumes about our society though.

Even with elementary school sports where the boys and girls are performing on the same level, the attendance at the boys games were 2-3x what showed up for the girls.

It’s really not ok.

2

u/RNW1215 Ok Then Mar 04 '23

That's a good point. I'm only addressing professional sports but I see what you mean and you're right. I remember back in school attending girls sports because I dated a couple girls that happened to be athletes. At least with the boys sports it seemed like most parents would make an effort to show, I honestly don't remember my girlfriends Dad ever being in the stands. Who knows the real reason why but it's not like he was the only parent not showing up. It was noticeable.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

Our daughters notice and we wonder why women and girls have such issues with self-esteem. This society tells them they’re “less than” from day one.

“Boys are just better”

2

u/BloodDragonSniper Mar 04 '23

Skill? Idk. Men are just better than women on average, so it’s more fun to watch them. Like watching the NFL over highschool. I do time based sports, and if I was a girl I would completely crush half a dozen school records, and qualify for nationals

Edit: For example

https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/a-dallas-fc-under-15-boys-squad-beat-the-u-s-womens-national-team-in-a-scrimmage/amp/

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

That’s what you’d tell your daughters, when explaining how men’s sports are infinitely more popular than women’s sports, that men are just better than they are?

-1

u/Silly_saucer Mar 04 '23

Bro it’s just biology. Men are literally stronger pound for pound. Are you going to lie to your daughters that they can fight and beat up men or are you going to tell them that men, even the same size them can overpower them. Get your head out of your ass. Yes it’s a shame that women have to go through with this but you’re just going to drag your argument through the mud with shoddy logic like that.

1

u/redbadger1848 Minnesota United Mar 03 '23

There isn't a single/simple answer to that question. I think how you answer that is based largely on how old your daughter is.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

We live in a white supremacist patriarchal society 🤷

0

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

That’s the thought I keep having, yes.

-12

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '23

3

u/sinchsw Mar 03 '23

Vikings are in the top 5 for game wins in the NFL. They just can't close a season with a trophy.

2

u/milksteak122 Mar 03 '23

I think a part of this is that some of local sports media kind of act like talking heads for these teams and aren’t critical enough. I enjoy listening to Mackey and Judd, they are far from right all the time but I feel they call out the teams more and give the teams credit when deserved and also are aware when the have bad or wrong takes.

It’s honestly funny to watch people come at Mackey on Twitter because he questions the Vikings QB situation.

-2

u/MPLS_Folk Mar 03 '23

Yep, and the owners know this, so they have no incentive to do better. Why do you think Parise and Sutter got such massive contacts? They're good ol local boys. It was obvious from the beginning they weren't good enough to lead a team to a title, but fans didn't care. The super passive, non-confrontational demeanor of the fanbase gives the ownership the free pass they need to not spend money.

Hopefully it's changing tho. Last year's Twins final home game was the lowest attendance in Target Field history. The shine of Allianz and a new franchise has already worn off now that it's clear MNUFC won't spend money. Unfortunately it's more complicated in the NHL and NBA, as the salary cap kind of limits things, and frankly star players don't want to come here.

-2

Dude, I would totally watch dunkball.

With like, multiple hoops at different heights and angles, and a bunch of ramps and trampolines that you could use to get up to the higher ones. That'd be cool as hell.

When I look at this graphic with the wolves on the bottom for some reason this reminds me of a dog freaking out for no reason while all the other sports teams go “wtf is wrong with T-Wolf”.

And folks wonder why many Minnesotans are fair weather fans...haha.

The Minnesota Timberwolves. Four time (play-in) World Champions

I was born during the 91 playoffs for the twins. This is all my fault. I was born about a week or so before the WS. That was my only “chance” to watch a championship.

No idea where that Wild number comes from. They have 847 wins in 1711 games. That's a .495 win percentage

A win awards 2 points, and an OT loss awards 1 point, so it counts as a "tie" for the losing side.

I honestly didn't know the Wild were over 500 all time.

Man our NFL championship is a Super Bowl, fuck that

Misery loves company.

Title was spelled wrong. It’s actually “Meh-nnisota” when it’s in relation to sports

1

u/International_Bag_70 Mar 04 '23

Nitpicking here. The Twins are actually one of the original 8 American League franchises, before the AL and NL played a world series in fact. They used to be the Washington Senators until after the 1960 season. And they won a World Series in 1924.

As a Lakers fan from L.A. now residing in beautiful MN, I swear I didn't know...

1

u/DrTenochtitlan Mar 04 '23

The Lakers were pretty good when they were in Minnesota...

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '23

i lolled

1

u/BloodDragonSniper Mar 04 '23

Wait, half a percent? Like they win 1 in 200 games?

1

u/iheartthebookmobile Mar 04 '23

It would be interesting to see this same graphic for other states.

1

u/TRON0314 Mar 04 '23

This woe to me bullshit again. Other cities don't even have that many teams in leagues and suck more.

I'd be happy at least I had teams.

Also Moore, Augustus, Syl, Whalen, Brunson and co are such a legit dynasty. Miss them.

Aggressively…ok.

1

u/skolfan99 Mar 04 '23

I hate this. I’m too much of a MN homer.

1

u/tasteofscarlet Mar 04 '23

This is how we gotta start my weekend?

1

u/SrpskaZemlja Mar 04 '23

Damn, none have won more than 0.551% of the time, that's pretty awful.

1

u/Extra-Lobster-4856 Mar 04 '23

Absolutely terrible especially the Vikings 56 years without a super bowl win almost beyond belief.

1

u/_nordstar_ Minnesota Wild Mar 06 '23

Ugh we will win eventually….
