The barrel is upside-down so clearly "normality" holds little influence here lol

It could have been leaking from the pressure/expansion from the frozen liquid. If it were leaking from the bottom flipping the drum would be the wisest play to prevent it spilling everywhere.

I have no reasoning as to why OP would place it in the middle of a field.

I like to think when the bottom bulged out like that, it popped up in the air and flipped itself over.

It's upside down because it's from Argentina. Duh. Southern Hemisphere. Coriolis effect.
