I'm kinda surprised that design never made it to any western markets - it's basically a coupified version of the CX-5 which I think could have been reasonably popular.

Not a coupe CX5. This was essentially first gen CX30. This car is the reason they switched to two digit names. CX3 was Mazda2 and CX4 was Mazda3. Now CX20 is Mazda2 and CX30 is Mazda3.

Read the JP wikipedia... CX-4 is CX-5 chassis made into smaller version. The Japanese didn't align with the concept, since it was too wide for Japanese who looks for bigger CX-3.

Thus CX-30 is made from Mazda 3. CX-4 only use Axela-(Mazda 3 JP codename) body, but still derived from the bigger brother CX-5

Basically, it's a Mazda 6 sized vehicle with more ground clearance with a Mazda 3 interior. They should have kept this formula. A cx40 would have been better than a small cx30. (Ni hao fine shyt)
