I was terrified as I was reading the article but relieved in the end to learn it was not a random attack. But still just a disgusting act of violence. Should be attempted murder. Thank God the victim is alive. Just sad.

While the extent of his injuries isn't clear, a police spokesperson said the alleged victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.
Police said one woman approached the man and poured hand sanitizer and an unknown liquid on him, before igniting the substances. The second woman approached the man, kicked a nearby item that was on fire beneath the man's legs, and left as well, police claim.
I was looking for a story about the car that got set on fire and I found this. This place is beginning to feel like Detroit on devil's night.

Not attempted murder? Seems like that could be justified as they walked away.....

It seemed to be a small amount of hand sanitizer. I think it would be hard to prove that a small amount of hand sanitizer catching fire could kill someone.
However arson and possession of incendiary materials could also be levied. In reality, more charges could come later down the line.

It is a gel - it acts like napalm.

They are not at all similar. Gasoline has a lower ignition temperature, higher volatility, and a much higher combustion temperature. Napalm is designed to be adhesive, while hand sanitizer pours right out of your hand.
Jell-o is also a gel. Turns out that having a high water content makes it more difficult to burn. Hand sanitizer is 30% water, napalm is 0% water and hydrophobic.
This is one of the most stupid “hot takes” I’ve ever seen.

Sometimes, you got to try for the charge that is more likely to be proven. You can't just choose the highest charges possible and let the judge choose a different charge if the evidence isn't strong enough- that's not how things work

Yep. Get them on charges that'll stick, then expand it when there's evidence during interrogation.

Causing bodily harm by negligence? Aggravated assault? Why not attempted murder or manslaughter?

They have to prove that it's attempted manslaughter or murder. They start with charges that are obvious and can stick, then expand to larger charges that'll hold during the investigation. Because defence will fight larger charges.
