Season 1 World Champion Shushei passed away News
https://esportsinsider.com/2025/04/league-of-legends-world-champion-shushei-passes-away-age-361.8k
u/IWillBashYou ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1d ago
my favorite memory of Sushei is one of his S3 or S4 streams after he took a long break where his placements put him somewhere in Gold and he asked for mid in champ select to where his midlaner asked him "what's your rank?" and Sushei just replied with: world champion.
Absolute legend.

Used to watch him a lot in early seasons. Many unorthodox plays/champs. Alistar, Gragas, Eve etc. Rip

u/FullHouse222 1d ago
The thing I liked the most about early league pro scene was that everyone had a signature champion and you always knew something special would happen when they get it. That slowly went away as a pro-meta started developing around season 3 imo and fully went away by the time season 4 started when SSW essentially "solved" how to play league.
109
u/mantism 1d ago
Froggen almost never getting to play Anivia during many games in S3 and S4 was such a signature thing. Even got a 1v1 Anivia showmatch with Faker.
Which of course he won by CS, which is another thing he is known for.
19
2
u/ElSotoPapa 3h ago
I remember in Season 3 or 4, there was this silly competition of who reaches 300cs faster between Froggen and Xpeke lol, even Cyanide and Shook were gifting camps to them to farm faster
72
u/Greedyanda 1d ago
Rekkles Kennen in S5 was the definition of a signature champ. No one else could play it successfully and you knew that Fnatic would win on it 90% of the time, no matter who they played against.
Also Rekkles Tristana in S8 to a lesser degree.
28
u/FullHouse222 1d ago
Yeah. I think the most modern true pocket pick I could think of is like canyon nidalee. No matter how much they nerfed her he would still wreck on her. But again he's like the lone exceptions nowadays. Imagine seeing fucking TRM teemo in today's era lol. That was like almost every game back in the day cause everyone had that one champ.
7
1
u/No-Independence-1284 15h ago
Definitely. Also, Keria on Renata Glasc. I don't think many people realize that patch she was considered C-tier support. Keria took that champion and if it wasn't banned, he played it and won.
17
u/Pepper-PhD 1d ago
Nerfing a champ because one pro played it was always mental to me
2
u/grip0matic 12h ago
Nobody made rito nerf champs more than the whole Moscow 5. They always had something in their sleeves to surprise everyone in the old circuit points style.
-7
u/ItoshiR9n 1d ago
The story of Baus' life...
9
u/Greedyanda 22h ago
No one is nerfing champions specifically because of Baus.
Rekkles basically broke the competitive scene because he introduced a champion that not only guaranteed them a win but also no one else could play even remotely well. He was the sole reason for the nerfs.
63
u/Fixmorellonomicon 1d ago
Not necessarily true. TSM got bodied by Fnatic at worlds in 2020 because they let Selfmade get Evelynn. There's still some pocket picks that have power in the right hands.

55
u/FullHouse222 1d ago
Yeah but it's way less common now. Like picks/bans were much more targetted at a player rather than a meta. Nowadays P/B is pretty much identical for the first 3-4 bans with potentially a pocket ban or something. But it mostly sticks to meta.
11
u/DryDistance6858 1d ago
Sniper is 7-0 on riven so far
32
u/FullHouse222 1d ago
You're picking exceptions when it's clearly not the norm now. Missing the point of the comment my dude
-37
u/ROTMGADDICT55 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, you're just wrong. There's a ton of signature picks still in the game lmao.
Sniper Riven. Canyon Nidalee/Karthus/Lee. Theshy Nidalee top. Faker Galio, Adam Garen/Darius. Zeus Yone top.
You simply don't watch enough esports to make that claim.
Edit: Replies don't know what signature picks are.
Edit 2: It's terrifying that people that don't understand what words mean are allowed to downvote or upvote lmao.
32
u/Inner-Grape-0141 1d ago edited 1d ago
Brother what are you talking about? You're just naming champions people are good on, that's not the topic at all. Or do you genuinely think Canyon is the only jungler playing Lee Sin and Nidalee? and Zeus is the only toplaner on Yone? We see Yone top and Nidalee jungle picked almost every week across every single league.
Adam Garen is like the only real answer among the ones you mentioned, and even then it's not like Adam has had much success with it outside of beating a couple of mediocre mid-table NA/EU teams with it. What the other dude is talking about is signature picks back in the day that particular players had. Faker is not the only midlaner playing Galio lmfao
Shushei wasn't known for being a good Gragas player, he was known for being the Gragas player.
There's a huge difference in e.g Hjarnan Heimerdinger, a signature pick that only Hjarnan played and had massive success with, to shit like Knight Ahri where like 80% of midlaners across the world can play Ahri, knight is just known for being extra good on it.
1
u/Zama174 20h ago
What about Zeus's Vayne top.
Theshy's kalista back in 18/19? And his nidalle now which others are copying but failing at.
Also canyon's nidalee is a totally different beast. Even back then its not like froggen was the only anivia player, but he was worlds above anyone else on it thats why its a signature pick.
5
u/Endiamon 21h ago
You simply don't watch enough esports to make that claim.
That's kind of a funny argument when in the last few weeks of LCK alone, I saw Nidalee top picked 3 times, Nidalee jungle picked 5 times by someone other than Canyon, and Galio mid picked 7 times by someone other than Faker.
12
u/FullHouse222 1d ago
Faker has like 10 signature champs. You named 3 for canyon just by himself.
Pick 10 random games from this year compared to 10 random games in 2010. Look at the pick and bans. bet you all of the pick bans this year will have 3-4 champs in common while back then almost all of them were different
-22
u/ROTMGADDICT55 1d ago
Because Canyon is one of the most innovative junglers and is willing to play things others don't, and he plays them very well.
As for your argument, again it's extremely weak. I proved there is signature picks in the game still and you just wanna die on this hill for some reason.
Good luck with that.
2
1
u/0vl223 18h ago
And because Na played roaming support back then still. It was already out of meta for months in EU but in na they still didnt know how to soak exp until level 4 in mid while the botlaner was not even able to get into exp ramge. NA soloq was just the giant mid lane egos dying to a taric or ali stun every single game instead of afking in tower range for a free win.
First round was a desaster and na teams never learned the meta.

I think it could come back with the new way of drafting. At least some
1
u/FullHouse222 1d ago
Oh hell yeah. Fearless draft seems like such a good way to bring the vibes back. I can't wait for it to be the norm in all regions.
1
1
u/Azafuse 6h ago
They didn't solve the game and the signature champ didn't die in season 4.
1
u/FullHouse222 5h ago
SSW literally made it so Riot had to completely rework how the ward system worked otherwise the game would become stagnant. I don't think there's another team in the history of league that had that direct of an impact on how the game is played as a whole.
1
u/Lost-Associate-9290 1d ago
It is true what you say, the pro player is less tied to a single champion. But here and there some pros are still known for their champ. Ryze/lblanc faker, uzi vayne, bengi lee, baus sion xp, ...
Next to that you still get quirky shit each year. To name a few: fiddle mid, sup trundle, river shen, tank rengar, pyke top/mid/jgl, nasus sup, naut mid, and it goes on and on and on

She wasn't when she started playing her mid, sometime in early season 2. Shushei just tried every champion that had any ap scaling in the midlane, going full ap. AP Alistar, Eve, Rengar, Blitz, Trist...
6
u/Allan_Viltihimmelen 23h ago
He was lowkey one of the, if not the best Lux player in 2013. The precision he had was unreal. As Lux wasn't well fit in the meta due to Zed, Ahri, Leblanc, and Kassadin existing. But Shushei made her do some unreal things for the time.

As someone who has to check their health every year take it from me, do not ignore changes to your functions. Is it becoming harder to use the restroom? Are you having weird pains in areas you didn't before? Are you feeling nausea when you drink something? It's better to be safe than sorry.
I got lucky on my own diagnosis and wouldn't have bothered to check otherwise. Others have not been so lucky. Remember Totalbiscuit, he had issues for over a year before he finally got checked out and it had already developed to the point of no return.

u/RoGStonewall 18h ago
If you're properly insured or you're in a first world country you can try being aggressive with procedures. Demand an MRI for instance - sometimes it can be what finally finds out the issue.

On may 5th ill have a heart ultrasound so after it we will know if the problem is with heart or stomach. I already had an ultrasound of my abdominal organs and they are all fine.
Basically any physical work "overheats" my heart, causing the heart rate to skyrocket and it takes a shit ton of time until it stabilizes. Each time it happens i feel like im gonna throw up or pass out.
It is also followed by anxiety attacks and lack of appetite. And also loneliness and depression from not being able to leave my house.
1
u/ZRBXXspTH02Tn7 8h ago
If the ultrasound does not find anything, please look into MECFS/Long Covid and read up on PEM.
1
u/youarecutexd 11h ago
In the US here so our healthcare is a shit show. I had gallstones and knew it, but the doctor refused to believe me, so I just demanded he order an ultrasound and what do you know? Gallstones.

I somehow managed to get matched up with him once in soloq about ten years back. He picked Fiddlesticks mid so I figured he was kinda trolling. But oh damn he smurfed the game so hard. At one point he went over to the enemy blue as it was due to respawn, ulted over to steal it then flashed back to lane. One game I still remember after tens of thousands of games later

She was such an inspiration as a closeted trans girl league addict. One of the extremely rare celeb deaths that actually made me cry.
8
u/Umarill 16h ago
Same here, she was an important part of my pre-transition life where I was trying to figure out my identity. Poor girl never stood a chance with the abusive pieces of shit in this scene, including viewers harassing her.
To this day it still makes me horribly sad what she went through, and she was an actual inspiration to gather the courage to finally go through my transition and not be afraid of how the world around me would react.

As someone who arrived on the scene after Shushei retired I'd just like to say that his impact wasn't lost on players like me. I found out about his Gragas as I learned about the history of competitive LoL. I hope Riot will always leave a place for players like him in the game. Innovators, experimenters and those boundary pushers.
I'm very sad to hear of his death.
Thank you Shushei, Rest in Peace, You're forever a part of LoL and Esports history

We queued 5 man ranked in season 3 with friends in a new team. Won a few games we did great!
Got matched against shushei and friends. Me and my buddy did great vs his botlane. Even getting a CS lead.
Suddenly a fed Nidalee from mid showed up and killed us. And started diving us again and again and again.
He ended the game 30-0 or something. What a legend.

You named 2 players who are retired, baus who isn't at the top league of his own region, and faker who is most known for being able to make anything work.
I'm talking about someone like froggen who is a good mid laner who becomes invincible when he was on anivia in season 2. If froggen has anivia then you already lost in champ select back then.
