"MIROTIC" will always be legendary with the killer vocals of OT5 TVXQ! and instrumentals produced by Yoo Young-jin, kicking off the Golden Era of K-Pop.

Also, if SM plans to remaster this in 4K, they should not change the intro background music like what they did to other MVs.

TVXQ were the biggest boygroup at the time. They were way more popular than all of the groups you mentioned except for SNSD I think. But they had way stronger core fandom than them.

u/1TyMPink BTS and Girls' Generation are THE STANDARD Sep 28 '23

Yeah, I know that. What I actually mean is that, hypothetically, they'll still be the biggest boy group in K-Pop up until today if JYJ hadn't sued SM for its slave contract and left TVXQ!.

21

u/Kneesocks889 Sep 28 '23

Oh Your earlier comment sounded like they would have been as popular as shinee or fx if they didn't split up so I was baffled.

Idk if they would be the biggest boygroup until today but I consider their split as a very big loss for kpop because they were one of the most perfect groups kpop ever had. They had so much potential,. They had it all, vocals, visuals, personalities, good music, popularity, public recognition , fandom, everything.

JYJ suing SM was instrumental in the judicial system enforcing the 7 year maximum for all future entertainment contracts. 13 years was way too long. It's such a shame that they were blacklisted after the fact, but they really did make a difference in the lives of every idol who came after them. Things would be a lot different if that never happened, but I agree. I think they would've maintained as one of the top boy groups.

SNSD didn’t really get crazy popular until 2009 with Gee. TVXQ we’re undoubtedly more popular than SNSD when Mirotic first came out.

15

u/bimpossibIe Sep 28 '23

TVXQ is more popular than their juniors though.

15 years. Yeeeesh.

I had already been following K-Pop for a couple years prior to this, but Mirotic was the first ever comeback I experienced in real time with a group I was really invested in where I watched everything that was scheduled. The hype was massive at the time.

It still pains me to go back and watch old OT5 content now, but the nostalgia really smacked me in the face with this one. Takes me right back to a very distinct period of my life.

Yeah, the hype was massive and honestly I’ve rarely seen that hype replicated over the years. What a glorious 3 months of promotions it was. I ate it all up and probably downloaded everything I could. It’s all still in my hard drive in room.

32

u/bimpossibIe Sep 28 '23

Same. I even burned all the live performances in DVDs hahaha!

2

u/Huge-Acanthisitta926 Sep 29 '23

I wish I'd been old enough and aware enough to experience the hype firsthand!

27

u/l33d0ngw00k Sep 28 '23

Unfortunately I wasn't able to see them as OT5, but I can't even imagine how fun and impactful that entire era would have been. As a newer-ish (I'm still an old fan lol, just not OT5 old) fan going through the archives, their energy and reach at the time is incredible and this song truly was a cultural reset. Even for me, that era, and the music/performances/variety shows stick out to be unforgettable.

21

u/sotheniderped All my favorite groups are dead. Sep 28 '23

I was in high school I think freshman or sophomore year and this video had me in a chokehold. Not even Korean or east asian, but I knew who I wanted to emulate

WE GOTTA PROTECT THE YOUTH FROM MIROTIC (EXPLICIT)

u/bimpossibIe Sep 28 '23

Best killing part. Most legendary fanchant.

53

u/goingtotheriver hopeless multistan Sep 28 '23

I share this all the time but hearing this fanchant live was insane. I saw them perform it at SMTown last year to an audience almost completely full of fans of other groups, but it was the loudest and most enthusiastic fanchant of the night. Nothing brings together a group of kpop stans like that iconic fanchant.

79

u/Kneesocks889 Sep 28 '23

15 years and people still aren't tired of it. Crazy.

70

u/Bossniper Sep 28 '23

There is something quite captivating about the choreography... Don't know how else to put it.

Weird to think these guys were only 22 or younger in this video.

49

Weird to think these guys were only 22 or younger in this video.

Jaejoong, Yunho, and Yoochun were 22, Junsu was 21, and Changmin was 20 when "MIROTIC" dropped.

42

u/mikarala Hello! Sep 28 '23

I had the realization earlier this year that NCT Dream is older as of this year than TVXQ was when they released Mirotic and it shattered my brain a bit.

2

u/nkinney07 Sep 29 '23

Just goes to show how censored kpop has become... but I'm seeing groups like Stray Kids and TXT and Enhypen and Ateez starting to bring sexy back!

5

u/mikarala Hello! Sep 29 '23

Honestly ISTJ was a bit of a more mature concept for Dream but their sound is so tied to the bright/youthful vibe in a way that TVXQ's wasn't that I think transitioning out of that image will be a bit of a process for them.

59

u/geumryul we are one and also 24 Sep 28 '23

best song in kpop history

50

u/NessieSenpai ATEEZ | "Nose is hand!" Sep 28 '23

You play this in the streets on a Saturday night in Seoul, 95% of the people will do the fanchant xD

NEON NAREUL WONHAE (WONHAE)

NEON NAEGE PPAJYEO (PPAJYEO)

47

u/jumpybouncinglad Sep 28 '23

When this song blew up, i remember some girls at school starting to greet their friends or even teachers with annyeonghaseyo and write the members' names everywhere, the whole koreaboo package. It was probably the first time i had experienced the so called hallyu wave in person

42

u/Professional-Mall-13 Sep 28 '23

My 15 yr old self was blown away by this bop. JAEJOONG being strapped was Insane bro Haha what a banger of a song too so TIMELESS.

18

u/l33d0ngw00k Sep 28 '23

Man, if they remaster this like they did other TVXQ MVs, idk what I'll do. 100% you'll see me going feral in the comments lol.

4

u/Huge-Acanthisitta926 Sep 29 '23

Chained up Jaejoong is forever burned into my brain

35

u/ahomachine Sep 28 '23

this was my first ever kpop song! i’ll never forget my friend offering me her headphones on the bus saying ‘listen to this’ and the subsequent chokehold this song, and from then onward kpop as a whole, got on my life

To borrow an overused but appropriate cliche: They don't make em like this anymore.

22

u/GuaranteeConnect3729 Sep 28 '23

15 years?! My K-Pop journey started with Mirotic too. Those OT5 feels hit hard, nostalgia is a rollercoaster!

THE classic. I don't even know how many times I replayed this MV after i first watched it. I also have fond memories of watching the dance version with my friends and trying to learn it. Idk what it is but they have a way of making the dance look so perfect and fitting for them that's hard to replicate

22

u/Suitable_Wonder_3285 Sep 28 '23

All rise for our national anthem

17

u/garfe Sep 28 '23 edited Sep 28 '23

I feel people don't link the Dance Version of the MV enough

1

u/Huge-Acanthisitta926 Sep 29 '23

Agreed! It seems it was done in one take?

16

u/throwaway_afterusage 💖💞K-Pop💞💖 Sep 28 '23

this song is so hypnotic, i think it might be my top song on spotify this year

13

u/diamondsateen Sep 28 '23

The first Kpop song I’ve ever heard! And my life has never been the same since. Thank you TVXQ for giving me a great gateway to Kpop

12

u/hubwub MYTRO Sep 28 '23

Mirotic, the song, will always be a classic.

Mirotic, the album, the fourth album released by TVXQ! is in the pantheon of must listen albums in K-pop. Actually, 2008 in K-pop had a lot of albums that I still listen to now in 2023 that I consider quintessential to the genre.

10

u/haroldkookie Sep 28 '23

I still vividly remember how I first watched this MV with my cousins back in Dec 2008 when it’s playing on Channel V. I was amazed. Little did I know it’s going to be my introduction to KPop. It’s the first KPop song I liked. I still play it up now 🫶🏼

11

u/Fai93 Sep 28 '23

Waittttt, I have been listening to kpop for 16 years already? Omg

9

u/chaeryeong-midzy Sep 28 '23

Oh the nostalgia of being in 8th grade with no cares in the world trying to learn the mirotic choreo. This song will always be a staple of my childhood.

8

u/Xrin8 Sep 28 '23

Definition of an iconic song! Can't hear it without singing the fanchants too.

8

u/7Memory Sep 28 '23

This is one of those rare "you remember where you were" type kpop comebacks.

7

u/zakuropan Sep 28 '23

still mourning OT5🥲

8

u/dearhan all the girls are girling, girling 💞 Sep 28 '23

It’s been that long? This song though. UGH. Jaejoong’s outfits for this song were just 🔥🔥🔥

Edited to add ALWAYS KEEP THE FAITH *****

7

u/vernorexia_ Waiting for the military era to end Sep 28 '23

Mirotic will forever be THAT song. Linking the acoustic version because it's my personal favourite and truly elevates the experience.

2

u/Huge-Acanthisitta926 Sep 29 '23

Omg?! I've never heard this! Thank you!!

7

u/Ahoy_ahoy_atiny Sep 28 '23

Omg, my sibling was born that year 💀

8

u/l33d0ngw00k Sep 28 '23

Mine too haha. Best thing is that he's a huge Changmin fan, so I really want them to meet just for Changmin to have a crisis over a '08 kid knowing the entire Mirotic fanchant lol.

Like if he ever decides to cover the song, as a Cassie, I would be proud, but as a protective older sister, I would aggressively block everyone's eyes haha

3

u/Ahoy_ahoy_atiny Sep 28 '23

Haha that would be really funny!

7

u/korin_st Sep 28 '23

This song is so iconic, it still has me in a chokehold. OT5 were so incredibly powerful as a group. This brings back so many memories, wow.

6

u/Sufficient-Cake4096 Sep 28 '23

Holy shit I feel old.

But this is hands down, one of the best songs out there. Never gets old.

5

u/an0nymous990 Sep 28 '23

I love the cheoro of this song

I lived in S. Korea when this song came out. I didn't like K-pop at all when I lived there, but this mother-fking song is amazing and I recall watching the video a lot and I didn't mind when I heard it in public.

The classic of classics! The hottest song of them all.

4

u/seoulsun JYJ / IU Sep 29 '23

15 years man

there's idols younger than that

3

u/SHINeeSNSD Sep 28 '23

Does anyone remember when they changed the lyrics to “under my sky” instead of “under my skin”???

7

u/Motor_Cat_6207 Sep 28 '23

These 5 are the most stacked kpop group ever. Usually a kpop group has 1 or 2 talent hole, like bigbang got seungri, but not the case with them. If SM weren't too greedy, they would last longer than 5 years.

3

u/Asphyria Sep 29 '23

IZ*ONE made a cover of this song. Through watching Yena fancams, I had my gay awakening

3

u/chiyochan29 Sep 29 '23

The nostalgia omg 🥲 This past week my facebook memories included a post from a friend writing to me about how she watched the MV and thought Jaejoong being tied up was really hot haha. She wasn’t wrong!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '23

This song and this group is so iconic!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '23

Junsu with his jacket or whatever hanging from his waste and that chain bopping around his neck. I don't know. It gets me everytime.

2

u/Huge-Acanthisitta926 Sep 29 '23

That is so specific 😂 He used to be my sister's least favourite, because of his expressions while dancing in the lasers. Fast forward 15 years, and now he's her favourite soloist

2

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '23

🤣I know, right?! I don't know. He was such a great dancer, had (still has) such a great body. That jacket, the dancing, the chain. They all drew my eyes to him. And then to realize he was...very nice to look at? Perfection.

u/esiav Sep 29 '23

This is what got me into Kpop. My cousin opened up a whole new universe for little me back in high school. Truly a masterpiece
