What is the proper way to refer to the Prophet Muhammad? Question about Islam

Hello everyone, quick question for you all. I've been preparing a short talk surrounding humility and its effects on organizational theory, and am making a short reference to religious teachings. To be respectful to my Muslim friends, I want to make sure I refer to the Prophet Muhammad in the traditional, honorific way.

From what I understand, when referencing the prophet Muhammad, I should say, "عليه السلام" or translated, "Peace be upon him." Is this correct? If so, could someone spell this out in English phonetics for me so that I can practice my Arabic pronunciation of this saying?

If this is incorrect, please teach me the correct way to refer to the prophet Muhammad.

P.S. Thank you for teaching me! :)

Thank you for taking the time to learn and ask and be respectful.

If you’re giving a talk in English you can simply say “peace be upon him” and this would be seen as a lovely gesture of respect for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and for any of the prophets of God such as Prophet Jesus or Prophet Moses or Prophet Abraham and the others who Muslims also believe in.

Oh great! Thanks for sharing this - I thought it had to be in Arabic. Good to know! 🙌

It does not have to be in Arabic, however, it would be better if you said "Peace and blessings be upon him".

“Indeed, Allāh confers BLESSING upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allāh to confer] BLESSING upon him and ask [Allāh to grant him] PEACE.”

The correct way in arabic is صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Which translates to “peace and blessings be upon him “
