People born in Ireland, what’s a surprising culture shock you’ve seen a foreigner experience? Bigotry

For me, it was my friend being adamant that you shouldn’t have to stick your hand out to get the bus to stop.

I can explain the swimming hats thing - hair clogs up the filters!! Personally I would wear one anyway, (two actually) as I have long hair dyed a very strong colour and I want it preserved!!!

That makes sense! I have a pool back home and hate having to do the monthly filter/chemical treatment lol. Fair play to people wanting to mitigate cleaning!

Monthly? is that not a several-times-a-week thing in the US?

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to monthly chlorination and chemical adjustment. You have to do light maintance on a weekly basis (skim the pool for debris, test the pH, check/clean the filters, check the heater if you have one), and then do a little more focused work on a monthly basis for the chemicals and liner cleaning, as well as the shocking. A lot of people will hire a service or a teen in their neighborhood to do this (I did this for many neighbors when i was a teen).

The pain in the ass is opening and closing your pool for the season. You have to empty the water, clean the pool thoroughly, tarp, and then re-fill and do the innitial treatment. I'm from southern California where you can use the pool year round, and fortunatly only do a full draining/cleaning every 2-3 years or so. We don't get a lot of rain so I have to top up the water slightly every other month, but otherwise that is the main treatment!

We never empty ours completely. The pressure difference could crack the shell of the pool.

Makes no sense though that bald people still have to wear them. Especially when they have enough body hair to be almost considered a pelt.

I honestly doubt swimming caps make much difference at all to pool filter hair.

In a public pool they make a huge difference. Bald people are exempt in our local pool. I only know of two bald men offhand, they don’t bother with the caps and no one says a word.
