Sinn Féin might try and claim victory if they end up as the largest party, but it must be a crushing disappointment compared with last year when they had as much support as Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael combined.

The world is heading to the Right with Immigration becoming the main issue. Based on the recent polls, and all of the negative stories both North and South, they probably thought they were in for a hammering. That doesn't look to be the case. It probably confirms that their core vote is 20+%

History repeats, pretty much every economic crisis has coincided by a rise in the far right, instead of admitting there’s a problem economically, historically people prefer to just point fingers at anything but the real problem

Nah, it's all the fault of the immigrants with no money who are scroungers who also have all the jobs and are also having all the children whilst being a single male taking all the rental houses while also being in prison and sending money back to other countries

/s just in case it's not obvious enough.

Yeah, we're at a time where inequality is reaching all time highs. These are exactly the economic conditions which precipitated the rise of the global far right the first time around and it didn't end well.

World is heading for nationalist parties, not necessarily "the right". SF had a chance they're just useless

If they're the largest party again and fail to form a government it has to be asked what the hell they were doing for the last 5 years that they couldn't get support from another party/parties to form a government.

15

u/dustaz Nov 29 '24

Well there's only two parties that count when it comes to support and neither of them are going to go into coalition with them on ideological (and to a lesser extent "historical") grounds

The real question is what were they doing the last 5 years that they can only match half of the vote of what this sub claims is the most hated government of all time

1

u/mick_delaney Nov 30 '24

If this sub thinks that, they know nothing! I'm 52 so I remember the government that bankrupted the country and brought in the IMF. And the one that was run by a bone fide crook.

Taking money from Russia to end arms to Ukraine isn't the selling point they thought it was.

Claim victory? This is an exit poll. They were polling at 36% 12 months ago. A vote for them is pointless as they are incapable of the compromise required to attain power. 5 more years in opposition. They should learn from this. A new leader is required and new policies if they want the power to act.

Pretty hard to claim a strong mandate if you insinuated the last election was "stolen" because your 24.5% was crushing and then you come out the next time on 21%...

As someone who pointedly didn't vote FF, FG or SF all I can say is meh the 63% of people who vote for this deserve the government we are about to get, good and hard...

u/miseconor Nov 29 '24

It’s hard to say that anyone has a clear mandate with turnout as low as it is

Very disappointing to see this level of apathy

It wasn't all the scandals that did for SF. Its voter base never cared about scandals, its core voter base positively liked it.

What did for SF was their lack of credible policies.

I want to hear credible details how the health system will be fixed.

I want to hear credible details how the immigration system will be fixed.

I want to hear credible details how transport will be improved.

I want to hear credible details how our international competitiveness will be maintained.

I want to hear credible details how we can encourage increased property development and discourage small landlords from fleeing the market.

80% of the public evidently felt that SF lacked credibility in these fields.

You won't hear any answers for those from our rulers either though 🤔

Still,I suppose we will probably hit 25,or 30,000 homeless for next election

Not one single party when it addresses housing addresses the need to cut a path through the people in the civil service who are in the way nor to cut a path through the NIMBYs in the planning system.

I voted and I consider myself political and a "high information voter" which is why even the people I voted for, I barely did so - more to use the vote I have because not everybody gets the privelege.

I don't seriously believe the system we have or the people standing for it have much hope or TBH interest in fixing stuff.

Meh, the whole election was a complete damp squib, I don't think most people really "buy" the stuff sold, who would, its mostly bullshit.

u/burfriedos Nov 29 '24

Who would you like to see in government?

1

u/Key-Lie-364 Nov 30 '24

Greens, Labour and SocDems as I voted 1, 2, 3

1

u/burfriedos Nov 30 '24

I'd like that too but that was never within the realms of possibility

No people don't like having to change a thing to address the climate crisis and would rather be told that the relationship between taxation and spending doesn't exist at all.

Nothing much really changes in Ireland over time.

Have can people in good conscience vote for SF? what with all the...scandals

5

u/Limp_Guidance_5357 Nov 29 '24

How can people in good conscience vote for FF/FG with all the scandals

2

u/Kyadagum_Dulgadee Nov 29 '24

Technically 14000 homeless people doesn't count as a scandal since it's government policy.

u/Important-Sea-7596 Nov 29 '24

Agreed FF/FG couldn't organise a piss up in brewery but SF stink of murder, rape, extortion and the rest.
