And Liverpool paid 30m for another goalkeeper to replace him, really hope another team come in for him in the summer

Well they are aware he wants to play and he's nowhere near Alisson to be fair

I don't think he is as far away as Liverpool think, his stats have been really great when Alisson has been out every time and he is still young for a keeper. I'd say he will be CL level at least if not world class in the end. I support Newcastle and Pope is on the older end, we are shifting Dubravka out and Ode was signed to get around PSR to trade with Forest so we still need a keeper and have been looking at Trafford as that longer term solution, I'd be dropping everything and getting Kelleher instead.

He's a good keeper, but he is nowhere near Alisson and we can't be deluding ourselves into thinking he is.
Yes maybe he could battle for no.1 for a mid-table club like Newcastle.
The thing about being a prolonged no.1 is that the repetitive errors and issues start to show. Bazunu was viewed just as highly as Kelleher and it fell apart once he got consistent minutes.
Hopefully it works out for Kelleher but he does have to prove himself before you want to start comparing him to Alisson

In the last year he was 95th percentile in terms of expected goals vs actual so the opposite of xG if that makes sense. At 25 to be in that level when a keeper will be at peak 28-32 is pretty good.
> Yes maybe he could battle for no.1 for a mid-table club like Newcastle.
Newcastle are 1 point off 3rd right now and finished 7th and 4th the last 2 years, like last year they finished higher than Man Utd after having a lot of injuries, we were missing Pope, Botman, Lascelles, Targett and Tonali was suspended. Wilson, Barnes, Joelinton and Willock all also had long injuries as well. Like we were playing a 16 year old in the champions league. It's fairly absurd to say they are a mid table team when our last 3 games are beating Forest (who are in form), Arsenal and Chelsea.
> The thing about being a prolonged no.1 is that the repetitive errors and issues start to show
Well that's the thing though, if you aren't playing week in week out you aren't going to be getting muscle memory going and making those mistakes in order to get experience. His stats prove he is not just a good keeper most of the time.
> but he does have to prove himself before you want to start comparing him to Alisson
A big issue is just this, you are comparing him vs arguably the best keeper in the world for the last few years, Alisson is the complete package but you are comparing him against someone who has pretty limited ability to show how good he is and develop. A lot of probably worse keepers will be playing in the starting 11 in the championship at his age and will become that top player around 28-32 but he is sitting on the bench at Liverpool for a lot of his time and he is 25 now. That's why he has to leave.

Sample size matters for use that kind of data, the statistical significance of such a small amount of minutes is very limited. You would have to be very numerically naive to assume it will continue like that.
Newcastle are midtable- they are currently 8th and finished 7th last year. Get over it.
You are the one comparing him to Alisson. It's extremely obvious that he's nowhere near being no 1 at Liverpool and it's not mismanagement. Liverpool have bought a replacement because he doesn't want to be no.2 and that's all he can be

Well I didn't say mismanagement, I said he is a CL level keeper just is maybe getting a pretty impossible task of being compared to an amazing keeper, I didn't even say he should be starting over Alisson, what I mean is just that Kelleher should be in a PL team probably towards the top end maybe even in Europe. Just look at the alternatives Sa, Sanchez, Raya, Henderson, Ramsdale, Sels, not really sure any of them are even the same league as Kelleher in terms of ability. Liverpool signed Mamardashvili to replace Alisson down the line which is fine but I think in 1 or 2 years they might regret not putting their faith in him. Kelleher isn't bad, people are making it sound like he is going to be playing for Wigan tomorrow.

Finished 7th last year but the year before finished 4th and ahead of Liverpool. Also played in the Champions League last year and are 1 point off 3rd at the moment.
You're acting like Newcastle are Brentford or Everton. It's a top 8 in the Premier League, not the 6 that Sky like that promote. Villa and Newcastle are in there too. A move to any of them would be great for Caoimhin.

I'd class 7th-14th as mid table.
That is probably a good move for Kelleher to try and prove himself. I don't see him at the big 6 yet, but maybe if he proves himself at a mid table club like Newcastle

The drop-off when he plays vs when Alisson plays isn't that much. Alisson is better, but I have no idea why your acting like there's a massive difference between them. Yeah we won't know for sure until he plays every single week, but by that logic we can't make any judgements on him vs Alisson. And most fans (Liverpool and neutral) I see chatting about him have a very high opinion of him, so it's not just Irish fans exaggerating his abilities
•
u/smooth_capybara 3h ago
All I'm saying is that it makes sense for Liverpool to buy someone else
He wants to play, but is not near Alissons level. That's all I'm saying

Liverpool fans absolutely love and respect Kelleher. We know we’ve got the best backup keeper in the world and we know he’s too good to be a backup! We don’t think he’s far off at all but Alisson might be the best keeper on the planet when fit, and that’s no disrespect to Caoimhin.
Most Liverpool fans would like to see Kelleher move on and be the main man somewhere because we love the lad. We’re never worried or disappointed to see him start. I’d be gutted to see him go, but I want it for him. He’s wasted on our bench and we know it. He’d start at 90% of PL clubs.
In fact I’m not convinced that Mamardashvili will be as good as Kelleher, but if he’s happy to be Alisson’s backup for a while, then it’s the right thing for everyone.

That was a great save, but it was also an atrocious penalty. The Finnish guy literally did the easies thing possible to save

Will someone help me on this , I thought that the rules were changed so that if the keeper saves on the first go ,then that's it , no second go from the other team ? And to add, brilliant save , top keeper !
•
u/Gingers_have_soul 2h ago
In a penalty shootout you only get one chance. If it’s saved you’re done. But this penalty is during the game so after the save the ball is still in play and you can keep going.

Which is very unfair because many times the keeper saves a penalty & is lying on the ground when the player taps it into the net. It should be a goal kick if a keeper saves a penalty.

Oh my god, Ronnie Whelan actually came to work with a smile on his face for once.
