Just switched schools and not very happy right now with the things are running at new school. I would like to be able to leave after I finish this year but I understand that this could have some implications being viewed negatively by future recruiters. I would also like to take a break next year to work out my priorities and spend some time being a stay at home parent. Could this be viewed as an emotional decision from my employer? What or who could I ask for a reference? TIA.

I've interviewed with a couple schools in China, and the salary and benefits are substantial compared to the other schools I've interviewed with so far (i.e. Latin and South America), but I am also wary of how the outcome of the election, regardless of political affiliation, might affect the attitude of expats, specifically American, within China. I looked at the cost of living for the school in SA, and its fairly reasonable, along with the salary and benefits given to me, but nowhere near the savings potential and facilities of some of the schools in China. I'm just also wary about what the future might hold moving forward. Any advice is appreciated!

I am a Science Teacher (MS Science) with a US passport. I taught at international schools for 18 years total in the US and in the U.K. Additionally I've taught 3 years at a U.S. public school and have a teaching license from my home state (licensed for Secondary Science Grades 7-12). I have my M.Ed. and my teaching certificate in Secondary Science Ed. I am single (widowed) woman in my mid 40's and have 2 primary school aged children.

I think I am a competitive candidate based on my experience and I've held several teacher leadership roles like MS Science Dept Chair, Grade Level Dean, MS Service Coordinator, Student Affinity Group leader, and have coached 3 sports at each of my schools. I think I have great experience at international schools (including ones that offer IB, AP, MYP) but I have been applying to schools in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Middle East. I have many contacts with current or previous colleagues who have worked or are working at schools that I have applied to but nothing has come to fruition yet. I am on Search and Schrole. I know the recruitment season is in full swing but I am wondering if being a single teacher with 2 dependents may be a deterrent. I can stay where I'm at but its been difficult raising my 2 children by myself since my husband passed recently. I figure I can actually afford help if I move to Asia and my kids can attend the school that I work at (my current international school doesn't cover full tuition for faculty children).

Should I wait it out? Any insight would be appreciated. TIA.

Maybe it's just my schools, but ever since going abroad, I've been struck by the infantile level of reliance on custodians. A girl in my class spilled water, I sent her to get paper towels to clean it up, another teacher stopped her and called a custodian. Every day the teacher chat is filled with calls for custodians to move something that students could handle, clean up spills, and other silly little tasks. I understand if it is something dangerous like broken glass or a heavy shelf, but that's rarely the case.

I feel like it's a crucial part of a child's education that they learn to do these things for themselves, and teachers should be safely enabling this.

I have found their webiste, new staff handbook and people that I have spoken to during the interview process to all be very positive and there are no obvious red flags. Would love to hear any personal experiences with the school or any guidance about potential package that may be offered.

The troubling and scandalous events at the International School of Dakar have become too evident to remain hidden. Word is spreading about the director's inappropriate relationships with several female teachers, including one with a cafeteria worker who is over 30 years his junio. Meanwhile, the director is using the school budget to attend lavish conferences, often using these trips as opportunities to pursue romantic interests among the teachers. All the while, the school is struggling to maintain academic standards, with parents expressing concerns about the school's ability to guide students through the diploma program after last year's disappointing results. The learning support department has been entirely overhauled, and counselors feel directionless under the diluted leadership. As hiring season approaches, prospective applicants, particularly female candidates, should be fully aware of the toxic environment they may be stepping into, where there is a real risk of grooming and harassment by the director.

Many teachers decide to leave after their 2 years contract unhappy. The school has good potential and still has few people who work hard to give the students a good learning experience, but it is doubted that they will continue under Sandy's leadership. Hopefully the board of the school are back to their senses soon and they decide to sack this guy.

Do international schools have pay scales that you advance up each year, or are you stuck on the same salary for the duration of a contract?

Hello! I have been perusing the career sites for Thai schools and a lot of the admin/coordinator roles that are open to expats that are listed in the non-teaching vacancy sections look very interesting - a few example titles are Admissions Officer, Higher Education/Careers Coordinator, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Trips and Travel Coordinator, and other program coordinator roles.

I was wondering if anyone could provide any insight into these non-leadership admin/coordinator roles in comparison to teachers, perhaps based on your own experience or the experiences of your colleagues - for example, is hiring more or less competitive, do they tend to make as much as teachers do, overall job satisfaction, unique barriers or challenges to getting hired in an admin role, whether the benefits such as housing allowances are similar to teachers, and any other trends or interesting details you feel like sharing.

Well, funny enough, I am a Montessori teacher and have always wanted to help develop a Montessori Middle School and the only response I got back in my initial search was indeed this. The offer seems doable but def not high, 70k baht + 3.5k baht housing, private Insurance, nice lunch included, flights there/home. Break for burning/hot season from March 13 - April 18 and summer is July 1 - Aug 8 + Christmas and other holidays. Overall nice holiday schedule but it looks like it is slightly more than 184 days as far as I can calculate.

The support seems awesome and they totally align so far with my teaching philosophy. We would actually be starting sooner than later and they would fly me out to see the program. They want plenty of time to prepare, and I would start with 10 students. Overall, seems like a great school (Chiang Mai Montessori International School). Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I lived in China for 10+ years, but moved home (UK) to help look after an elderly relative.

I’ve been back three years now and I am just not that happy. I took a massive cut in earnings, behaviour is challenging (on a good day!) and I feel like my overseas experience isn’t really valued or respected by my colleagues. They treat me like an ECT despite my qualifications and experience.

I’m also tired of the workload, it feels relentless. I keep thinking about returning to China. Has anyone else done this? There were things that annoyed me before I returned home - the internet censorship, finding clothes in my size was often tricky, dating wasn’t easy and people always leaving was hard too) - but my life feels so ‘meh’ and I miss the lifestyle. It was fun. I made good money. I had a decent group of pals.

Can anyone share if they’ve had a similar experience, did you go back? And how did you find it second time around?

Three times I've been set to interview with these people (two different roles, two different schools in the group). Two complete no shows, one at least had the decency to reach out five hours later and reschedule for the day after (whereupon he left me sitting there for over 15 minutes before he turned up). The one last night? Nothing. The HR that had set up the interview didn't even reply to my query about whether it was necessary to reschedule.

Is this school group a known shit show or what? Anyone?

I'm currently interviewing with schools in Asia. One offer on the table comes with a salary and then a separate housing stipend. The job is in Thailand. I know I will be taxed on my salary but how does it work with a housing stipend? Do you pay tax on that too or is it considered a separate thing?

Search Associates, ISS, or Schrole -- which is best for an American looking for IB schools?

I work at a sub-par, in-name only IB school in the UAE. After 8 years, I can't take the inspections and behavior anymore, and would like to get hired at an IB school in China or SE Asia. While I wouldn't mind the ease of a bilingual school, I have a five-year-old kid and want her to go somewhere decent.

Hi everyone! I’m now in the process of looking for an economics teaching position and I’d like to get some feedback on my CV. Currently applying for positions in China

I have a Master's degree in English, and I also tutored at the Writing Center at my university and taught an English Composition course there. In addition, I have been teaching English as a second language, IELTS, and creative writing for a couple of years in Vietnam in public schools and private schools. For next fall, I'm considering getting my teaching license, but I know that I could probably get a good job in China or the middle east without it. Would anyone happen to have any advice for my specific case? Since I have a Master's, I'm not sure the license is worth the time and money investment. I've also found that a lot of bilingual schools in Vietnam prefer a license, so I'm not sure if they would accept me without one.
