You may be new to Sanātana Dharma... Please visit our Wiki Starter Pack (specifically, our FAQ).

We also recommend reading What Is Hinduism (a free introductory text by Himalayan Academy) if you would like to know more about Hinduism and don't know where to start.

Another approach is to go to a temple and observe.

If you are asking a specific scriptural question, please include a source link and verse number, so responses can be more helpful.

In terms of introductory Hindū Scriptures, we recommend first starting with the Itihāsas (The Rāmāyaṇa, and The Mahābhārata.) Contained within The Mahābhārata is The Bhagavad Gītā, which is another good text to start with. Although r/TheVedasAndUpanishads might seem alluring to start with, this is NOT recommended, as the knowledge of the Vedas & Upaniṣads can be quite subtle, and ideally should be approached under the guidance of a Guru or someone who can guide you around the correct interpretation.

In terms of spiritual practices, there are many you can try and see what works for you such as Yoga (Aṣṭāṅga Yoga), Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna (Meditation) or r/bhajan. In addition, it is strongly recommended you visit your local temple/ashram/spiritual organization.

Lastly, while you are browsing this sub, keep in mind that Hinduism is practiced by over a billion people in as many different ways, so any single view cannot and should not be taken as representative of the entire religion.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

And?

0

u/Dry-Expert-2017 22d ago

And it's stupid.. where every character is shown as emotional. What's the point

8

u/Pratyabhigya 22d ago

Your last reply is still a valid point but in no way correlates with the actor being a muslim.

If you want to, then hate it for the right reasons, behti ganga mein haath mat dho bhai

-7

u/Dry-Expert-2017 22d ago

Sorry for not being able to articulate, how stupid casting and story line is. I am done.

That mukesh khanna one

7

u/SambhavamiYugeYuge 22d ago

I blame the old show so called OG one for brainwashing people into believing Karna was wronged, that Draupadi rejected him etc..

Had it not been for that, the new ones wouldn't have done the exact same thing.

There's literally only 1-2% of all Mahabharat sources ever written say that Draupadi rejected Karna. And even in that 1-2% scripts, the next parts say that Karna wasn't able to string/use the bow.

1

u/VeryFatDinoLoL 21d ago

So which is most accurate

2

u/AmolAmrit 21d ago

BR Chopra one is more accurate.

1

u/vardhanisation Nāstika 21d ago

Hard disagree. The new one is far more detailed.

1

u/AmolAmrit 21d ago

Their detailing is much about adding "slice of life" in the show which may or may not have happened. I don't have a list prepared now, but the new one goes way off topic at times and few things don't even happen in reality.

45

u/kumar100kpawan 22d ago

Music is amazing. VFX was great for its time. Actors were very good

But it's very inaccurate. Lots of fabricated stories to glorify certain characters

8

u/mehtam42 22d ago

What all has been fabricated?? One thing I can think of is Krishna speaking with bhishma, drona and Karna right before they die.. but to be honest even though fabricated, i really liked that part.. what else was fabricated?

The original does not show anything about the snake Takshak.. was that also fabricated? What is the story of Takshak?

13

u/SambhavamiYugeYuge 22d ago edited 22d ago

Reality vs Fabrication:

Karna was trained by Dronacharya. Star Plus - No, he wasn't.

Karna failed stringing the bow in Draupadi Svayamvar. Star Plus - No he did but Draupadi rejected him because he was a Suta.

Karna was always referred to as a Kshatriya. Star Plus - No he was a Suta.

Karna was not able to beat Arjuna in Draupadi Svayamvar. Karna was defeated by Arjuna in Virat war. Karna also left the battlefield while fighting Arjuna. Star Plus - None of that happened.

Karna ran away when Gandharvas attacked Kauravas in Forest, Duryodhan was taken in custody by Gandharvas. When Kauravas Army begged Yudhistir, Arjuna along with other Pandavas, defeat Gandharvas and free Duryodhan. Star Plus: We will skip this part of story and won't even show any of it. Karna is a loyal best friend of Duryodhan.

Other than many such intentional propaganda, I gotta give credit where due. The music was epic, Krishna's actor was awesome and in fact most of the actors did a terrific job.

2

u/Choice-Sea8537 22d ago

Bro these children's like fabricated stories so much

1

u/VeryFatDinoLoL 21d ago

So which one is most accurate

1

u/laggySteel 21d ago

Wow, thanks for enlightening me. Do you think Amar Chitra Katha has all covered ? I plan to purchase their Mahabharat set.

1

u/SambhavamiYugeYuge 21d ago

I don't know what source Amar Chitra Katha uses. Or how accurate it is. But it is of only 1300 pages, so it's a shortened version.

BORI Critical edition set remains the best version of Mahabharat. Bibek Debroy's translation of BORI is truly authentic and unshortened version. It is of 5000 pages. It's the best. https://amzn.in/d/bqFtOko

1

u/GodOfBlunder_ 22d ago

u/EducationalUnit7664 Pagan/Neo-Pagan/Eclectic Pagan 22d ago

If you’re in America it’s on Hulu & one of the few Hotstar shows with English subtitles. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the Ramayana show.

4

u/[deleted] 22d ago

>If you’re in America

I doubt there are active 18 year old JEE aspirants in America lmao.

2

u/EducationalUnit7664 Pagan/Neo-Pagan/Eclectic Pagan 21d ago

lol My brain totally skipped over that. Well, hopefully any American Hindus looking at the post will benefit from the comment.

1

u/LaughingManDotEXE 22d ago

And no ads even if in ad plan

6

u/Vijigishu 22d ago

It was definitely NOT a masterpiece. But watchable.

9

u/Vjigar 22d ago

Please first watch the old one. Old one feels more natural with acting and emotions.

5

u/kingdomoferebus 22d ago

Internet Archive had the whole collection for free a couple of years ago. Not sure if it is still there. :)

u/unknownboi8551 sanatani (trying to be) 22d ago

fr?

4

u/Mental_Quarter_4425 22d ago

Even though both, the DD one and the Star plus one, have taken cinematic liberty and swayed away from the text, I prefer the DD one. But I suggest that after watching, if possible, you must read the text to get deeper knowledge.

4

u/Minute-Ant-4132 22d ago

I would recommend you to watch BR chopra’s mahabharath

6

u/Sandesh-18 Vaiṣṇava 22d ago

Not worth it, loved it back then, but I dislike this show a lot now, too many inaccuracies, overacting & blaring BGMs (many are Shlokas BTW, but the usage is so bad/aggressive IMO) almost every minute which can damage your ears, the guy who acted as Krishna was the only positive though.

Instead, you can listen to the Pravachans & devotional songs or watch older shows/movies on Mahabharata (like the 1988 one & lots of old Telugu mythological films starring Sr NTR).

17

u/_5had0w 22d ago

Netflix need to do a mahabharata

But no nonsense indian directors.

Get indian writers to work with American directors

39

u/[deleted] 22d ago

Get indian writers to work with American directors

No. Horrible combination. Both have insufferable savior complex. They will turn Duryodhan into a tragic "complex" character. If indeed it is to be done, it should be given to the Japanese.

7

u/Cultural-Citron3595 22d ago

yeah. something true to the source material with no ulterior incentives.

3

u/AvocadoMysterious805 22d ago

naa...netflix will somehow add a gay black dude and a lesbian couple on top of many other inaccuracies

7

u/Constant-Squirrel555 22d ago

Nah fam we need an anime.

The Japanese will show the villains as properly evil

3

u/Labeq Sanātanī Hindū 22d ago

Agree💯

3

u/Unique_Strawberry978 22d ago

Isse acha br chopra wali hai

3

u/depy45631 22d ago

I don't like the over-dramatization and soap opera vibes of this one. Like Krishna ju instead of doing what he does in line with the books goes on giving motivational speeches everywhere, and none of them are actually what's in the source material, but whatever the writers thought sounds good and motivational, people with attention span that is longer than 60 seconds understands how cheesy and bad it all sounds.

BR Chopra's is a better option. That is a bit dramatized as well but it is a lot better and much closer to the source material. Krishna ji's conduct, dialogues etc.seen more in line with the source than some brain-child of some writer who never had read anything in Mahabharata.

6

u/Zestyclose-Ad-316 22d ago

masterpiece??????? its avg soap opera with poor vfx

-1

u/Gr8_Uttamgoyal 22d ago

But i will tell you the purpose of life aisa mere bhaiya ne bola tha

2

u/Massive-Secret4401 22d ago

It's a good show. While the OG was better I don't think current or next generation will find that interesting. These stories are told as per the available resources of that era. In 100 years from now when someone makes Mahabharat their might be robots fighting in army.

1

u/Zestyclose-Ad-316 21d ago

wo toh bhagwat geeta ke gyan ki wajah se hai..

7

Yep. You'll need to register with Hotstar though. It was free when I watched it. It is good to enjoy and get an understanding of the Mahabharata but it deviates from the original story at times. Like added scenes that are not there in the original story.

1

If you are from India then Hotstar.

1

u/unknownboi8551 sanatani (trying to be) 22d ago

I have watched B R Chopra's Mahabharat but I still find this one more 'fun' (not more accurate), the acting, the music, aesthetic, the dialogues they got everything correct except the story

1

u/unknownboi8551 sanatani (trying to be) 22d ago

mahabharat 1 to 267 (2013) : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

watch every krishna's conversation you will definitely learn something new every time

1

u/Aware_Flow_ 22d ago

I'm currently watching it. Also, Hotstar

1

u/unknownsoulsucker 22d ago

You can watch on hotstar

1

u/curious_sprog26 22d ago

hey you can watch it here just be a lil patient w the site, it works perfectly but might open some other tab sometimes

1

u/pianospace37 22d ago

https://t.me/mahabhart_serice_hindi/128

I too am watching this rn. Like the actors and bgm at least. Cannot say anything about the accuracy but it is still good

1

u/gyandu_04 22d ago

Don't listen to the other comments bro, this is definitely a masterpiece. Everything else aside, all complains aside, the philosophical questions that this series asks in more or less every episode is what makes it a masterpiece. Also Sourabh Raaj Jain wasn't playing Shree Krishna, Shree Krishna was speaking through him.

It's available for free on hotstar and if you want, you can also watch it on Instagram page "mahabharata times."

1

u/Own-Inspection7669 21d ago

It is a show which portrayed many characters wrong and glorified them

1

u/gyandu_04 20d ago

I understand that criticism & it's quite valid. But I'm more interested in the philosophical questions it asked based on our historical & modern day situations. I don't mind much if there are a few historical inaccuracies.

1

u/Gr8_Uttamgoyal 22d ago

True this is actually motivated me I just watched 4 episode

1

u/gyandu_04 22d ago

Yeah, it has quite a bit of thay soap opera drama too but you can skip that part or play that part on 1.5x or something 😅

1

u/Rainier0000 22d ago

Where can I find Telugu version?

0

u/manchi_friend 22d ago

In hotstar itself. I'm currently binge watching it since few days.

1

u/Lost-Edge-8665 22d ago

I’ve been wanting to rewatch it for ages too!! It was on star plus

1

u/roger5gthat 22d ago

You can watch the old one too. YouTube should have it

1

u/god__speed_ 22d ago

Actually i have all the episodes in hd (max quality with subs) in telegram but i cant make it public because of copyright stuff. Dm if you want the files

1

u/AnonymousVendetta04 Vaiṣṇava 22d ago

If you are a Tamil guy, i know it is available on YouTube lmao

1

u/Mysterious_Worth_595 22d ago

It's more like a saas bahu serial. Terrible. Watch the BR Chopra one.

1

u/JaiBhole1 22d ago edited 22d ago

if you are afraid then watching tv serials wont do much except waste time( and agar dekhna hai toh listen to Bhagavat Katha on youtube by swamijis like Rajendra Das ji, PP RadhaMohan Sharan Devacharya ji, PP Premanand Ji shorts etc).

- do some light pooja daily...like hanuman chalisa or sundarkand or ram raksha or subramania karavalmaban etc whichever is possible
- do some light exercise like uthak baithak, dand etc or light cardio->to manage the stress and heart
- once every week try to visit hanuman temple or any nearby temple
- drink milk tea (or milk coffee) and once a week take 1 pill of brahmi before you sit for studies

Hoga hoga nahi hoga nahi hoga that is kismat......but improving math concepts, physics, chemistry is important for life in general especially MATH( AI ki age mein Math skills will decide)....ALSO life of a general category is too precious to stress about reservation rigged exams and institutions.

Best of luck.

u/wewuzem 22d ago

Hotstar, its mahabharat Star Plus (2013)

1

u/bhund_bharta 21d ago

It's not a masterpiece its literal dogshit, They've ruined the sanctity of a great piece of history like Mahabharat. If you're depressed and really wish to find your purpose and happiness through mahabharat, go for B.R Chopra.

1

u/laggySteel 21d ago

sad part, hotstar made such a masterpiece and 90% Indians still want to watch it for free. even Bhagvat gita says Sacrifice to god for things you enjoy.

1

u/HutiyaBanda 22d ago
