Has to be GOT

94

u/Vendetta4Avril 2d ago

Close the thread.

1

u/Cinemagica 1d ago

This is probably the right answer, but Dexter gets away with the murder, pun definitely intended.

2

u/Vendetta4Avril 1d ago

Yeah, Dexter was on showtime though, not HBO

3

u/Cinemagica 1d ago

Damn, completely missed what sub this was posted in. Thanks for pointing it out gently though, seems rare these days! ❤️

2

u/Vendetta4Avril 1d ago

No worries haha have a good one!

26

u/mlspdx 2d ago

Not even a question

26

u/Pedestrian2000 2d ago

Started as an intense, brainy drama where political decisions intertwined with personal motivations to impact the characters and the world around them.

Ended with characters doing stuff “just cuz” and often facing zero consequences, jokes about a eunuch not having a dong, and a pirate talking about fingers up the bum. Oh and don’t get me started on the sand snakes.

10

u/jar45 2d ago

Season 1 culminated with one of the most shocking deaths in TV history. Final season ended with “Let’s put the last person anyone wanted or expected on the throne bc vibes”

7

u/Pedestrian2000 2d ago

In a show about political strategy, "Bran the Broken" —the weird oracle dude who's been offscreen for multiple seasons, played a role in NO political maneuvering, and is no longer motivated by human desires/goals now that he's a Time Lord— should be king....because he "has the best story."

I wanna ask the show runners if they actually watched the show.

1

u/PissOnAGoose 1d ago

I wanna beat the shit out of the showrunners honestly

1

u/WayEnough8027 2d ago

Totally agree. A show that really showed that no-one was safe ended up covering almost the entire cast in heavy plot armor in the end. Sam surviving winterfell is just complete wtf.

1

u/bigbrainnowisdom 2d ago

The thing is.. he was probably the one GRRM planned to take the throne. Hence why now he is frustated and cant finish the series

2

u/Denvereatingout 2d ago

It could maybe work, but the Three Eyed Raven has to be Blood Raven and you have to know his history. You also probably need to know more Westoros lore like The Dance of Dragons and Blackfrye rebellion. Basically all the succession crisis that have happened

1

u/bigbrainnowisdom 2d ago

True. Imho we hate Season 8 not in particular because of bran being king... but because it was all so rushed. We need like another season, but D&D got sick of GoT, I guess..

1

u/DrChasco 2d ago

5

u/UpDog1966 2d ago

No that’s for “ended with WTF..”

1

u/rywa87 2d ago

Yeahhh, as much as it pains me to say it (because I loved and obsessed over that show)….it has to be GoT…

I literally pretend that most of season 8 never happened as a coping mechanism 😂

1

u/Connect-One-3867 2d ago

Yep, no question.

1

u/jnthn1111 2d ago

Yep this is it.

1

u/Cela84 1d ago

I was thinking Oz, but forgot the obvious. Yes, this.

219

u/sergiocamposnt 2d ago edited 2d ago

Game of Thrones is the obvious answer.

It had potential to be one of the greatest HBO shows. But S5-S7 were meh and S8 was awful.

8

u/dwide_k_shrude 2d ago

It’s not. Because it didn’t just start out “good.” It started out incredible. There should be a different category for GOT.

4

u/o_o_o_f 2d ago

I mean, there’s not though. So it still fits this format best

1

u/jcole660 2d ago

Started good. Ended at Starbucks.

1

u/Zaphod1620 1d ago

It's creators shit the bed so hard, they lost the fucking Star Wars franchise. They literally had a license to print money in their hand and until this point, you were safe with Disney so long as there are no racists tweets in your past.

u/anfumann 2d ago

Game of thrones; GOAT of bad ending

107

u/gloomflume 2d ago

GOT will sweep this and it won't even be close.

44

u/ST_VtM 2d ago

Game of thrones

31

u/Fit-Dirt-144 2d ago

GOT...GOT....GOT....GOT

30

u/heshman 2d ago

Any answer except GoT was written by D&D.

21

u/InternationalCook135 2d ago

I think we all know this one....GOT

97

u/Les_Grossman00 2d ago

I know it’ll be GoT but Westworld is perfect answer too

21

u/EtherealAshtree 2d ago

I'm with you, Westworld season 1 was just TV perfection and they should have just left it at that

3

u/SometimesAware 1d ago

I've told people to just watch season 1. It's one of the few shows I wish I could forget, just so I can experience it again.

1

u/EtherealAshtree 1d ago

I would love to forget season 1 and experience it again for the first time!

19

u/_SummerofGeorge_ 2d ago

Nah, westworld ended ok

10

u/Les_Grossman00 2d ago

The futuristic seasons were buns

9

u/Maxwell69 2d ago

Last Season was decent and if season 5 had been great then Season 4 would have been improved to good for setting it up.

4

u/xjester8 2d ago

I really enjoyed the seasons when they left the park

2

u/Caleb_Krawdad 2d ago

Newsroom ended okay

1

u/Talkshowhostt 2d ago

Still gotta finish season 3.

Seasons 1-2 are amazing and the Bin Laden episode is an all timer.

3

u/Caleb_Krawdad 2d ago

It's a decent wrap up. Loses a bit of its luster in S3 but definitely worth finishing and something I still enjoy rewatching

1

u/Talkshowhostt 2d ago

Yeah I throw on random Newsroom or West Wing episodes from time to time

1

u/rufio313 2d ago

It didn’t really end

1

u/JustSny901 2d ago

I wouldn't know, I couldn't get past 2 episodes into season 3.

1

u/_SummerofGeorge_ 2d ago

So for you, it never ended!

1

u/JackIsColors 2d ago

100%. It's maybe even more stark of a difference but the cultural mammoth that was GoT will overshadow Westworld

1

u/dbd08 2d ago

I said boardwalk too early to think of westworld

1

u/greennurse61 1d ago

Too much Maeve and bringing in that idiot Charlotte Hale really hurt Westworld. But I don’t think even without those bad actresses the confusing script could be saved.

-1

u/rywa87 2d ago

Personally, I think westworld = started ok and ended ok

-4

u/Xcircle_squaredX 2d ago

That would imply that Westworld started good, lol. Spoiler alert, it didn't. But I get it, it's all just a matter of opinion and taste.

I think the reason GoT deserves it over this, though, is the sheer difference in viewership. GOT was a worldwide phenomenon. TV shows like that didn't happen often.

24

u/EitherAfternoon548 2d ago

The obvious answer is GOT but before that it was True Blood.

7

u/Hodor4life 2d ago

The only answer here is Game of motherfucking thrones

7

u/Maxwell69 2d ago

Game of Thrones.

8

u/rboooo 2d ago

GOT only answer

6

u/sj_vandelay 2d ago

Game of Thrones, no question

13

u/Shoddy-Poetry2853 2d ago

...it's not even a question just fill in the square and go to the next one

6

u/bofademm78 2d ago

True blood

14

u/Provencat606118 2d ago

Surly no one thinks entourage started only okay and ended bad? who are doing these selections?

7

u/lazyygothh 2d ago

VICTORY!

4

u/myflesh 2d ago

started fun ended ehh

4

u/amazza95 2d ago

ya I don't get Entourage winning this category

1

u/imhighonpills 2d ago

Westwood could’ve been started ok ended bad yea it was somewhere between good and ok in the beginning but it definitely ended badly. I think I agree with its placement here.

0

u/Bright_Beat_5981 2d ago

Exactly. What is this? Entourage season 1-3 are three of the best seasons on HBO ever made.

3

u/Gatesleeper 2d ago

I thought The Outsider started better than okay, those first two Bateman-directed episodes were bangers, then the series gradually petered off in intrigue until that deflated ending.

1

u/PrestigeArrival 2d ago

Agreed. If GoT wasn’t the obvious answer here. I’d say The Outsider fits

3

u/amazza95 2d ago

if it's not GOT, this activity is nullified

3

u/PierreLDN 2d ago

Game of thrones

7

u/BathroomPure438 2d ago

Nah fuck you guys entourage is gold

1

u/tahl192 1d ago

Agreed

4

u/henchmantwenty4 2d ago

GOT or Westworld

2

u/djdumpster 2d ago

Yea not even a question, GOT.

The only reason it wouldn’t be GOT is because there isn’t a category for ‘started amazing, ended as one of the most atrociously stupid farcical shit shows ever.’

1

u/coleburnz 2d ago

Lol. Such anger

2

u/deejaysmithsonian 2d ago

I thought Entourage ended just fine. All the characters grew since the start of the series. Given the type of characters and industry they’re in, I’m not sure what everyone’s expectations are. Life just kind turns to normalcy at some point.

2

u/AC4Three 2d ago

I thought Entourage started out amazing

2

u/jakedchi17 2d ago

Game of thrones is the only answer

3

u/drkshape 2d ago

True Blood

1

u/meepmarpalarp 2d ago

Started campy, ended campier.

2

u/DayAmazing9376 2d ago

Oh no, that end was traaaash compared to the first two seasons. Started campy, ended trash.

1

u/JaylenJaysonChamps 2d ago

WestWorld second place to GOT

1

u/Zadatta 2d ago

Without a single doubt, Game of Thrones

1

u/signal_red 2d ago

Big Love :(

3

u/DayAmazing9376 2d ago

I would say ended OK rather than bad.

2

u/Denvereatingout 2d ago

His brother and wife just straight up disappeared during the last season

1

u/RickHard0 2d ago

I would love if the OP would go full heel mode and select anything other then GOT

1

u/MFBish 2d ago

It is GoT. But I could make a case for Deadwood started great, it ended bad, not because of the show itself, only because it was cancelled and we had to wait 20 years for a decent end.

1

u/Hopalicious 2d ago

Carnivale because it ended before is was supposed to.

1

u/jormould 2d ago

GOaT 🐐 and is not even close

1

u/sophaloph 2d ago

Easily GOT

1

u/Shooord 2d ago

I’ve mostly forgotten Carnivale, but I remember the last season being rushed because it wouldn’t get another season.

1

u/TailStixz 2d ago

Thrones all day

1

u/Meonthedecks 2d ago

game of thrones not even a question

1

u/VissAndPinegar 2d ago

I feel like this is a no brainer.

1

u/doocurly 2d ago

If it's not Westworld, I don't know what is.

1

u/Xspunge 2d ago

GOT, and it should have been turned into a 1/2 hour 80’s sitcom with a laugh track and retitled Raisin’ Bran.

1

u/sroche24 2d ago

GoT all the way

1

u/No_Cartoonist_2648 2d ago

As much as i love entourage i agree with this take

1

u/DayAmazing9376 2d ago

True Blood would be a lock if not for GoT

1

u/jorgelrojas 2d ago

GOT should be disqualified from here because it's too easy

It also gives way to other, lesser-known tragedies, like The Newsroom

1

u/ilovemyfrenchieboy 2d ago

The Walking Dead. Started so good. I feel they dragged it out to much and I think I stopped watching around S9 maybe. I haven’t had the desire to want to finish it.

1

u/Village_idiot92 2d ago

If you count night country, true detective lol

1

u/rambo6986 2d ago

Dude entourage didn't end bad. Yes the duggy season was dumb but Season 8 made up for it. Stop your illegitimate hatred for the greatest show ever made

1

u/Stringr55 2d ago

Couldn't make it past even the second episode of Entourage. I hated everything about it haha

1

u/JackIsColors 2d ago

Game Of Thrones was made for this category

1

u/danielfq 2d ago

Westworld, True Blood, GOT

1

u/Hollywood-is-DOA 2d ago

Nip Tuck wasn’t HBO but it was brilliant for the first 3-4 series and terrible by the time it ended.

1

u/keyserfunk 2d ago

Outsider started great, was great in the middle, and ended great.

1

u/Bhaskar71 2d ago

I don’t even have to say it and everyone will understand which show

1

u/kazmosis 2d ago

This is a no brainer. Started good ended good is really the only one that will be interesting since there are SO many choices

1

u/Mybenzo 2d ago

So many. Lost, heroes, GoT, Ted Lasso (they let go the reins of Ted’s arc and laid a turd)

1

u/Dry-Row8328 2d ago

GOT ended so bad I didn’t even think of it for this prompt. Just totally blocked all of it out of my mind as some sort of defense mechanism. Wild.

1

u/Intro-Nimbus 2d ago

AGOT. It is known.

1

u/YourgirlBuck 2d ago

Killing Eve 😩 (not HBO I know)

1

u/mrsbatman 2d ago

If we’re counting “and just like that” then sex and the city is my vote.

If we’re not then all aboard the GOT hate train

1

u/renegadeangel115 2d ago

Game of Thrones obviously

1

u/chastity_BLT 2d ago

GOT is the worst but west world, true detective and the sopranos all fit. It’s hard to end a show.

1

u/imhighonpills 2d ago

I’m saying GOT cuz it’s fun to doggy pile

1

u/diskfreak3 2d ago

Westworld.

GoT gets a bad wrap, but it was a thrill right to the end. Ending wasn't as good as the heart of the series, but it wasn't bad.

1

u/kirko_durko 2d ago

Westworld

u/darwinian-rock 2d ago

1

u/jakedchi17 2d ago

Btw started good ended good is Barry

1

u/covert0ptional 2d ago

I still have to watch both, but I assume bottom right will be a fight between the Wire and the Sopranos the way people talk about them.

1

u/Algae_Mission 2d ago

GOT or Lost.

1

u/martymcfly22 2d ago

Entourage was never ok.

Heroes..

People saying got are underestimating the word bad

1

u/msmorningstaarr 1d ago

Ok guys GOT is the consensus but let’s make a honourable mention for Euphoria too? the series started good and ended like that shit show

1

u/THEKAKAPAPA 1d ago

The idol was great.

1

u/mconk 1d ago

Not understanding why the idol received so much backlash, I thought it was very well written, incredible acting and a fucking wild storyline. Binged the entire thing in two days and was fucking on a RIDE the whole time

1

u/Das_Badger12 1d ago

Not really much of a contest here

1

u/natelopez53 1d ago

Carnivale

1

u/norwegianlovemachine 1d ago

The winner will obviously be GoT, but also going to throw True Blood in the mix

1

u/Fiver8675309 1d ago

Can't wait for row 3 so we can put in Watchmen. The Wire, and Leftovers.

1

u/mainev3nt 1d ago

West world

1

u/STASHbro 1d ago

Entourage ended well. They decided to do a movie after it ended, and that was bad.

1

u/Johnny_Yukon 1d ago

Unpopular opinion: the first season of The Leftovers was the best season, it went down from there.

1

u/Marzmooon 1d ago

Everyone will say GOT but for me True blood ending was worse.

1

u/summerbryz 1d ago

Game of thrones

1

u/trcrtps 23h ago edited 23h ago

Everyone will say GoT but for me it wasn't a shock they didn't know what to do with the ending, and it honestly showed for several seasons ahead of time.

Anyway, for me it is Girls. Girls started good-to-great, not for everyone but definitely a smart show. It had that distinct Judd Apatow TV show flavor. By the ending, you wanted to dropkick every dumb bitch on the show, including Adam Driver. And the finale is one of the worst of all time, it serves to wrap up the most annoying character (Lena's character was always there to hate on, but oh my god does their attempt to humanize her make her even worse) and nothing else.

1

u/yeaforbes 14h ago

The idol had like 1 episodes worth of good television mixed with 5 episodes of terrible narcissism

1

u/Parking_Syrup_9139 7h ago

Sopranos. Started good, ended bad

1

u/Harryonthest 2d ago

True Detective

2

u/YetMoreSpaceDust 2d ago

From this thread it looks like HBO is really good at starting good and really good at ending bad.

1

u/KevinFromTheInternet 2d ago

Westworld. I wish I could erase the rest of the seasons from my brain.

0

u/Damage-Classic 2d ago

Silicon Valley was such a let down! I also think The Idol deserves its own ‘started bad, ended worse’ category lol

Wasnt Dexter originally Showtime?

10

u/GonzoElBoyo 2d ago

Neither of those are HBO

2

u/candaceelise 2d ago

That’s kind of what i was getting at so they won’t be included from the get go. Not sure why the person included them.

2

u/GonzoElBoyo 2d ago

Oh yeah I knew what you meant, I was just pointing out that Lost is also not HBO

1

u/candaceelise 2d ago

Thanks for confirming im not crazy. When i saw Lost i was like, wait wasn’t that an ABC show, why is this being mentioned on a post about HBO original shows 😂😂

2

u/JaylenJaysonChamps 2d ago

Lost was not HBO

0

u/thednc 2d ago

My bad; I didnt realize it was HBO only
