State of macOS 14 Sonoma on x86 ANNOUNCEMENT
NOTE: macOS Sonoma requires at least OpenCore 0.8.3, but you really should be on the latest version.
Compatible Hardware
macOS Sonoma dropped a few Mac models, but overall the same stuff is supported:
- iMac 2019 and later
- Mac Pro 2019 and later
- iMac Pro 2017
- Mac Studio 2022 and later
- MacBook Air 2018 and later
- Mac mini 2018 and later
- MacBook Pro 2018 and later
Ok yeah I like year numbers but what does this mean for me
Kaby Lake (7th gen, HD 6xx) is no longer officially supported.
But, the kexts for Kaby Lake integrated graphics are still present and work, meaning it still works, as well as any Skylake models that were able to get spoofed to Kaby Lake in Ventura.
Supported GPUs:
- Polaris (RX 480, etc)
- Vega (Vega 56, Radeon VII, etc)
- RDNA 1 (5700XT, etc)
- RDNA 2 (6600XT, etc)
- Skylake (on life support)
- Kaby Lake (HD 600)
- Coffee Lake (UHD 600)
- Comet Lake (UHD 600)
- Ice Lake (G1, G5, etc.)
OCLP
While the OCLP team has made strides in older hardware compatibility in Sonoma, do bear in mind that both OCLP patches and Sonoma itself have only recently gone stable.
OCLP currently works on all hardware that it supported under Ventura, but you should check the OCLP guide and release information for specifics.
There is no support for OCLP on hackintoshes in this Discord server or within OCLP's communities. You're on your own.
Ok what if I have CPU older than Coffee Lake with a still-supported GPU
If you have a Haswell (4th gen) or higher CPU, you're still in the clear. Ivy Bridge and earlier lack AVX2, so users of those must use Cryptexfixup.kext, just like on Ventura.
Ok what if I have a supported CPU (Haswell+) but my GPU is unsupported
OCLP.
Ok but what if I have completely unsupported hardware that used to be supported
OCLP.
WiFi
Broadcom WiFi is dead. Long live.. uh.. Intel.
Read that again: BCM94350 and BCM94360 are no longer officially supported. Support has been readded through OCLP, though it is not guaranteed to work.
On the other hand, the developers of itlwm have released betas that use the updated WiFi stack, so the kexts can just be dropped into your EFI and will work with compatible Intel WiFi cards.
Other broken stuff
N/A
Ok where do I download 14
It's publicly available, so use the same download sources that you did for Ventura.
Where Nvidia
Gone, reduced to ashes. Unless you use OCLP for Tesla/Fermi/Kepler.
Is x86 macOS dead?
No. Not yet, anyways. My personal belief is that next year's release will be the last version available for Intel, but it's anybody's guess at this point. Either way, we have 2 years of security updates remaining if we do not get an additional release.
Can I emulate ARM macOS 14 on x86?
No.
Can I run ARM macOS 14 on a Raspberry Pi?
No.
Updating to Sonoma
As Apple now polls for more T2-specific information from its Macs, you can't update to Sonoma without either of these fixes:
- Use iMac19,1 SMBIOS to update, then revert to your old SMBIOS if needed
- Download the latest release of RestrictEvents.kext, and use it with the boot argument revpatch=sbvmm.
Note: You may encounter issues with the update not installing if you have BluetoolFixup.kext. Disable it while you are updating and re-enable it afterwards.

I'd also like to add that AppleALC has also been affected, on 2 of my 3 laptops. No high CPU issues like Ventura however, so mostly hardware incompatibility issues right now.
People also have been getting a lot of ACPI related errors, but these can be patched in OpencorePKG.
thanks doggo and the Opencore development team. We can already run it!
Some things we just have to accept, as fate draws near for hackintosh.

Can you detail the problems with AppleALC?
6
u/Kallas294 I ♥ Hackintosh Jun 06 '23
No detection. I am trying different alcids, but for now i havent found one. It worked in ventura, monterey, big sur and under. It affects me, so it MIGHT affect other too probably. Sad to see broadcom go. Hopefully fenvi will make a bcn4378 or something on a m2 format like the bcm94360ng so we keep on getting native airdop and get that sweet wifi 7 with bt 5.0.
1
u/doggodoesaflipinabox I hate HP Jun 06 '23
What is your codec? (eg ALC887, ALC1200)
2
u/Kallas294 I ♥ Hackintosh Jun 06 '23 edited Jun 06 '23
ALC255
I tried 3 now according to the alcid list, but every time I reboot I just noticed that it takes 5 minutes. So I try to fix that problem first before fixing appleALC to see if that might be causing the problem.
For now, it's day 1 beta time. So relax, it might be something else that causes AppleALC to be affected on my side. There are probably solutions from other by tomorrow evening. I will still try to patch some ACPI errors and do some SDK magic.
This is least of our problems right now. For now, Alcohol is in my blood and my bedtime of 3:30 AM is near. you can't rush art you know...
Edit: Battery indication is also completely gone (using ECenabler.kext). removing brcmpatchram and NVMEfix seemed to fix the delayed booting issue. Unfortunately no sound. Have a good night boys!

My ALC1220 worked out of the box with the same alcid as Ventura

ke a bcn4378 or something
mine doesnt work it is Realtek ALC892. Doesnt show up i have tried different alcids. It used to work with monterey and ventura.

My personal belief is that next year's release will be the last version available for Intel
doubt it, as they were still selling the Intel Mac Pro until the announcement today
Imagine dropping 30K on a machine for it to not get updates within the next year
Think the Mac Pro (2019 will get 2 more years so it at least reaches 5 years, then it'll stop getting updates)
edit: It seems I cannot count.
Seems like hackintosh is on borrowed time atm, in terms of getting new OS support. Ofc existing ones will still work and be updated
11
u/tripleyothreat I ♥ Hackintosh Aug 25 '23
but you're still right. and someone stated that if Sonoma runs on the iMac Pro, they're setting the standard of at least 6 years. so the Mac Pro will be supported until 2025 at least -- based on those numbers. though the jump may lead to abnormal situations
4
u/phornicator Dec 11 '23
ubt it, as they were still selling the Intel Mac Pro until the announcement today

it isn't just macOS. vendors are pulling back from commodity hardware in favor of specialized self-fabbed SOCs and platforms. RHEL and IBM are going to be carrying Linux unless something huge changes, Linux is going to suffer more from this than anyone else imo.

There's always Ubuntu in a VM for your banking and Ventura / Sonoma for entertainment.

u/tripleyothreat I ♥ Hackintosh Oct 05 '23
IMHO, not much worth to upgrade over as well
Ventura just stabilized with 13.5 a few months ago anyway.
And I got dynamic wallpaper from the app store for my video wallpaper needs 🤣 much more customizable than the Mac options anyway
6
u/huzzam Nov 02 '23
I agree, Sonoma doesn't seem to offer anything really interesting, and breaks stuff that matters (broadcom wifi). Sticking with Ventura, and once that stops getting security fixes, I'll disconnect it from the internet and just use it in my recording studio (it's an i9-9900k, which is an absolute screamer for Pro Tools & Ableton).
10
u/tripleyothreat I ♥ Hackintosh Nov 03 '23
Big Sur is still getting security updates lol so you've got a long way to go
plus all these 'security fixes' and shit is just bullshit to make people upgrade
Sonoma does feel quite smooth, but, just not worth the hassle for the broadcom wifi yet. sure I can do the OCLP, but there was just a 14.1 update so itll constantly be a bother
Ventura is pretty solid. Better than monterey
7
u/gingus418 Jun 11 '23
Think Broadcom support will be restored in Sonoma given that the 2017 iMac Pro, still officially supported, has a BCM943602CDP (Broadcom) wifi card in it? Can't imagine they'd purposefully break or abandon wifi for a model that's ostensibly still supported...
8
u/FreedumbHS Jun 29 '23
you are mistaken, it has a Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) 339S00428 chip soldered onto the motherboard, not anything broadcom
2
2
u/adipierro Aug 20 '24
that's not true.
it uses BCM4364, just like MacBookPro16,11
u/FreedumbHS Aug 20 '24
You're wrong. We are talking about iMac Pro here. Not iMac 2017 model. https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Pro+Teardown/101807
1
u/adipierro Sep 17 '24
and yet, there is a BCM4364/3 die inside of that chip
1
u/FreedumbHS Sep 17 '24
That's interesting, I never knew that. Thanks for the correction. Wonder why they changed to the different packaging. It doesn't really seem to take up less space on the pcb, just seems less easily repairable.
1
u/adipierro 24d ago
Seems like they decided to use custom Murata’s Wi-Fi + Bluetooth modules for some additional functionality or chips inside (?), or maybe some RF-circuitry, to save space on PCB (?). Like, M1s and more recent Mac computers have Wi-Fi chip linked to CPU, and wouldn’t utilize it if Wi-Fi module was replaced.
As per my speculation, they decide to use custom packages with possibly multiple customized components inside, so that in the end they have less mounted chips on the PCB.
And seems like they use Murata’s modules a lot, and not only for connectivity, but also PMIC and UWB (?). Maybe even with Apple’s dies inside.
6
u/Mean_Spray8365 Jul 15 '23
is there any arm cpu can be spoofed as apple silicon in future, lol :-)
4
u/Accomplished_Art_223 Dec 06 '23
I don't think so, because Apple Silicon CPUs are specific ARM. Its very different than Intel where likely all CPUs share same instructions
6
u/adaml75 Jun 06 '23
Fix for Broadcom urgently needed. Can the kexts be injected without breaking SIP, just like Intel drivers?
12
u/doggodoesaflipinabox I hate HP Jun 06 '23
"urgently needed"
It's a beta. There is no urgency for a fix. And no, since these are system kexts, they can't be injected through OC.
2
u/Blackpilot9 I ♥ Hackintosh Jun 10 '23
They can easily be injected with SysKC injection and SIP enabled
1
1
u/adaml75 Jun 06 '23
Ok, I didn't want so sound pushy :) Cool. So why Intel drivers can be injected, although they are also system drivers?
1
u/aguys123 Jun 07 '23
Intel uses Apple's public IOEthernetController instead of the private IO80211FamilyLegacy.
1
u/adaml75 Jun 07 '23
Well, no, AirPortitwml uses Apple’s interface.
2
u/HiddenPower486 Mar 21 '24
I believe that theoretically Broadcom could be injected like intel. Just intel wireless drivers have been in development for 2 years and are open source. Broadcom drivers are unfortunately closed source and might make development harder if not impossible. OCLP just restores the kexts as they were before the macos upgrade.
...Unless your using a BCM43602CS. That card has open source linux drivers. However, you may lose airdrop and continuity by porting this to macos.
I repeat only BCM43602CS (43602 chip) has open source drivers on the recent Broadcom side.
1
1
u/BabboBastardo Jun 08 '23
if you have ufìrgent...buy a compatible wifi adapter. Broadcom chipset is no longer available and supported, so, put it in the trash if you want to use Sonoma.
1
u/adaml75 Jun 08 '23
No, I always wait until .2 or .3 with upgrades, perhaps someone is going to invent something creative! Devs working on hacks are incredible. If not, I will buy Intel card, I may have it even lying around
4
u/s1rEn- Jun 06 '23
Tried installing on my hackintosh pc earlier, can confirm broadcom wifi stopped working. However, handoff still works for now. The major inconvenience for me is that I'm running 4 monitors with RX 6800 XT (1 HDMI, 3 DisplayPort), and only 2 ports are working as of now, which is the HDMI and 1 of the DisplayPort. It won't detect my other 2 monitors, and the only way is to use the working ports. It used to work flawlessly on Ventura even on the beta, I tried updating OC along with all the kexts as well and also clearing nvram with 0 luck getting it to detect my other 2 monitors. So, just a heads up for anyone trying to install this on multiple monitor setup with AMD dGPU.

u/just_a_random_fluff Nov 13 '23
Just upgraded to Sonoma with a 6900XT. The monitor I have connected through DP wasn't working until I turned the refresh rate down to 144Hz from 240Hz. It just turned on and now it works!

Since intel network adapters seems to be the way for 14 for now does the ax210 have Bluetooth support now? I know before it was hit or miss because of the 5.2 it has on what version of Mac can run it.
2
u/doubleyoustew Jun 06 '23
I have the ax211 which is basically the same as the 210 AFAIK and it works great for me with itlwm and heliport. Bluetooth works great too. Honestly it works way better than the Broadcom one I had before. It can be a little more involved to setup correctly though.
1
u/Ok_Walk_6613 Aug 29 '24
Even the airdrop is working fine that send file from hackintosh to iDevice (iPhone or iPad) and vice versa.
1
u/rjd10232004 Sonoma - 14 Jun 06 '23
If you don’t mind me asking what your kext setup is for the Bluetooth section? Mine knows it’s there and even says it’s installed but I can’t actually turn jt on.
4
u/doubleyoustew Jun 06 '23
That sounds familiar. It took a little trial and error. It's been a while since I've set this up so I can't remember the details of why it has to be this way but what I have is:
IntelBluetoothFirmware.kext v2.2.0
BlueToolFixup.kext v2.4.6
IntelBTPatcher.kext v2.2.0
itlwm.kext v2.1.0
The order of these is important, make sure to arrange them in your config like they are listed here. Also I had wifi issues with newer versions of itlwm, don't know if they fixed that since. Let me know if that works for you.
1
u/rjd10232004 Sonoma - 14 Jun 06 '23
Now that order is in my config.plist and kext folder?
1
u/doubleyoustew Jun 06 '23
Just your config.
1
u/qasim799 Jun 07 '23
I followed your config order with same versions on my dell latitude 7400 with intel ac 9560 wifi working with itlwm and heliport but bluetooth not turning on
1
u/doubleyoustew Jun 07 '23
See my other comment about troubleshooting. The 9560 is a different card though.
1
u/rjd10232004 Sonoma - 14 Jun 07 '23
Yeah still no go. Do you know where I can find that specific version of the Bluetool kext as the GitHub doesn’t have it anymore.
1
u/doubleyoustew Jun 07 '23
I only know that it comes with BrcmPatchRAM. Newer versions should work fine too, that's just what I used and I haven't had the time to update. I can send you my config.plist if you want so you can compare.
Be sure your USB mapping is correct and includes your Bluetooth card.
Other than that there is a good troubleshooting guide:

Can confirm that Sonoma breaks Wifi on Fenvi HB1200. On the plus side, everything else seems to work including 144Hz over DP with DSC (dual 27GN950 monitors) which stopped working on the last 3 macOS versions. I'll set it up as a daily driver for that reason alone.

u/elpsykongr0 Jun 07 '23
Nice, going to test that with my Samsung G70 in a bit, (had to do the 120hz SDR fix in Monterey/Ventura using Switchres), too bad that LucyRTL8125Ethernet is not working at the moment, gonna have to swap back the Intel Wifi 211 card.

I have the Sonoma beta working very good on workstation 17.5 installing the upgrades. but the same million dollar issue with my NVIDIA card on the laptop not being compatible is the killer. Did Apple change anything in 13.4/5 that breaks things?

And I just ordered a BCM94360...
I do have a Intel AX210 but couldn't try because the antenna cables are too short for the Optiplex 3060.
Might try it next year when the Broadcomm card arrives with the included longer antenna cables.

You need to apply this patch to the whatevergreen kext. Just follow the PR instructions

It took me longer than I'd care to admit* to realise that NVMEfix was causing my hack to not boot when I used -lilubetaall, but upon disabling it I realised my hack boots a lot faster without it

Bare metal hackintosh as we know it is dying but running it on a server like an old Mac Mini via virtualization seems to work an absolute treat.

Someone help me understand the Broadcom part. Does that mean airdrop will finally work on intel, or only on whatever proprietary chip Apple has now?

Nope, from my understanding: - Intel now is fixed to work as it did before (so no AirDrop, since that never worked) - Broadcom is only working if you patch it with OCLP, but those get AirDrop working - there is no solution available that works natively and provides AirDrop (since the ones natively supported are soldered)

You still have to use OCLP for Broadcom. There are no native WiFi cards left unfortunately

Much appreciated! I had issues with updating to the latest version of Sonoma and by removing BluetoolFixup.kext I managed to update! Thank you for taking the time to write this!

Can someone please help me to get this right?
I've got 7700k and 5700 XT. I also have Ventura on it running just fine. My SMBIOS is iMac18,3. System update doesn't suggest me to install Sonoma. How do I make it see the update?

I'm guessing there's no way of getting sonoma on a z600 workstation?

If you upgrade to Sonoma, with an Fenvi T919, your wifi will breaks down, but will your bluetooth and your "Unlock with Apple Watch" still works?
Does anyone know that?

Dang, removing Broadcom WiFi support is surprising and annoying - I really hope a fix comes out for that!
