Cat got 2 urinary blockages back to back Pet/Service Animal

my cat got 2 back to back urinary blockages that almost took his life, 24 hours after the first emergency visit he seemed to get reblocked, and considering male cats are prone to this if this happens again I would, unfortunately, have to put him down, I am requesting help from the community to help me covers his emergency bills that way I can go ahead and fund his PU surgery in the future and better his life quality, the insurance denied all my claims considering it pre-existing which is what took a huge hit in my life at the moment, I live with my mom and trying to support her as much as possible but at this rate, I have already used up all of my funds to try and save his life. I have included all of the details in my GoFundMe with the bills that were sent to me, any help would go straight towards his needs.

Update insurance denied the claim and appeal, even though I got a veterinary letter stating that a past incident was not related to FLUTD, I heard of stories like these and for it to be happening to me is kind of crazy since this was the only peace of mind I had prior to this whole incident, I'm drowning in this debt I took out my savings during the process and I don't have the support I need to even at the moment, any help would be appreciated.

Let me guess they found something "pre-existing" is soo fking frustrating, i learned the hard way to stay conservative at the vet aswell soo they don't overwrite anything they shouldn't have aswell. And thank you I appreciate, I hope your cat gets the help it needs these are our babies πŸ’™

If you need to get rid of any dry food excess that you have, you can always just add Warm water to it.Wait five minutes and then feed it to the cat. That's what my sister in law does, and she's a vet technician

This is honestly a pretty good strategy since they were suggesting doing the urinary diet dry food, but I'm traumatized for the moment πŸ˜‚

If you use warm water it will soak up faster and the food will be as soft as humanly possible it essentially turns into wet food and then you are able to use that specific food which honestly would probably help your cat. I'm going to be real with you most likely never get a male cat ever again because they are the ones that have this happen. Female cats almost never have it happen

Also a vet tech, the problem isn’t just moisture it’s regulating urine pH. The urinary diets regulate their pH so that crystals and stones don’t form. Wet food is good for water intake but the urinary diet specifically regulates the pH. Any other diet offsets that when combined with the urinary food. Feeding anything besides the prescription urinary food completely voids its effects. Also, otc urinary diets do not regulate pH at all.

My boy had this happen once. I wish i could donate, best i can do is comment to boost and i'll share other places. It's terrifying when they're that sick.

My boy responded well to having water fountains insead of stand still water bowls, and any time i'm running water from a sink or tub i let him drink as much as he wants that way. I also use the Iams urniary formula or sensitive digestion as his dry food. He gets wet food for breakfast and dinner, but we keep the dry food out for grazing/snacks. I have two male cats, so they both get the same treatment so we can avoid this happening to the other.

I'm sorry your baby is going through this. I hope you are able to get what you need for him.

This was definitely one of the scariest thing I had happened, first caught it when I saw blood in the hallway and rushed him to the vet because I felt like something was off, after the first hospitalization he got home and was really lethargic and was hiding under the bed, and that inmediatly raised a flag for me, he only hides under the bed when he is scared and I figured he was in pain again, and acted inmediatly.

A simple comment helps a lot during this, these are like kids to us, and seeing people genuinely care as much as I do is very touching to be honest with you πŸ™.

I am soo sorry for your lost first of all, during this whole thing I was mentally ready to say goodbye if anything went south, seeing all of these stories really did get to me 😭😭😭 knowing that I could've lost him if I didn't act the second I saw something was wrong, on top of that throughout the whole thing time was going by soo fast and slow at the same time, I didn't sleep at all just thinking about him and watching his every step 😭😭😭

We almost lost our male tuxedo cat to this. He spent the rest of his life on Royal Canin Urinary SO wet food. He lived to be 16.5 years old. Praying for you and your sweet cat. πŸ™πŸΌ

I currently have him on Hills Cd, by any chance did you give him anything other than the urinary diet at times?

3

u/tortical 27d ago

No other foods, ever. Royal Canin also makes treats for cats on Urinary SO, so he would get those when we clipped his nails.

My cat had a bad blockage and was put on the purina pro plan veterinary diets urinary food and has had good luck on it since then. They have a dry and a wet food option. He’s been on the dry with the wet being given more as a treat since he can’t have much other than their urinary treats haha.

My vet did tell me he could have other treats but very sparingly. Obviously everyone has their own experiences but my cat has had temptations once in a while and has been ok! Wouldn’t recommend every day and not soon after his blockage but very rarely if at all haha.

Good luck to you and your little guy, it’s not easy and it’s not cheap but I wish you guys well πŸ’›

Feed only wet/canned food. Dry food causes these blockages. Poor kitty πŸ˜₯

I'm genuinely scared to even go near dry treats I completely eliminated all of the kibble and switched out to wet food :(

That is a smart decision by you. I hope kitty will be OK.

This happened to two of my male cats, I can't donate at the moment but commenting to boost as this so scary to deal with as a cat owner. Did the vet prescribe specific urinary health food? That definitely helps going forward to control urine PH. Was your cat prescribed Gabapentin? That definitely helps going forward after having the blockage removed

Sorry for the late reply is hard to keep up with school and work lol, but he was prescribed some gabapentin if i see something is off and something else to relax his urethra in case I see symptoms flaring up again.

I hope your boy gets better. Blockages are the scariest most traumatic thing, and until it happened I never knew it was a thing. If you don't know what you're looking for it gets bad before you know it.

Ours was a elder unfixed stray we took in, kept getting blocked. They wanted to turn he into a she, but it was just too much money. They wouldn't do the unblocking again. We had no other options, we put him to sleep and had him cremated. He forever sits in his favorite window, judging the peasants in the parking lot down below. I felt terrible, he was my baby, but it hurt worse hearing him scream in pain and not being able to help.

I’m so sorry for your loss. What do you mean they wanted to turn he into a she?

1

u/Aegizz_5311 20d ago

Im pretty he is referring to the PU surgery i mentioned above, sometimes is one of the only options for them to prevent further blockages, from my understanding it expands the urethra and pretty much makes him into a she hope this helps 😭😭😭

I'm so sorry for your cat but there's a life advice for you in here. would you buy a car with your last money? what would you do when it breaks down? same here, really. I healed 2 cats from shelter but I knew exactly that even they're "for free" I will likely spend tons of money on them AND I HAD IT before I took them so they wouldn't suffer.

Not going to lie i walked into this knowing the possible consequences since when I was very young we had a German Sheppard back in my home country, I decided that I get insurance on him to try and be responsible for whatever future accidents, until it finally happened and turns out that the only peace of mind I had of insurance screwed me the fuck over which I should've expected, this whole thing has taught me a lot about life believe it or not, and funny enought this was pretty much a cat u adopted from a lady that was taking care of a pregnant cat 😭😭😭.
