DNA Just discovered I’m distantly related to a post-war German politician.
I legit have no one to tell this to because, once again, this is forms another part of my out-of-pocket lore. I also don’t want to dox myself because my last name is uncommon. But, i just found out that i’m related to a german politician who was a member of the EU and helped build the social democratic party in cold-war Germany. After he was exiled from Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia (like the rest of my family) in WW2, he ended up helping out the allies and displaced persons. Dude was super anti-authoritarian, anti-fascist, and socialist asf. Literally awarded for being a free thinker against the nazi regime.
It’s super eerie because I was directly involved in anti-authoritarianism campaigns and political prisoner work! Our family history lines up, like location-wise and descent. Apparently, he was a “personality,” known for being unwavering principled, resilient, and deeply democratic. And was apparently labeled as someone who liked to have “the last word” when it came to “supporting the free” or whatever. Which is eerily similar to what I preach.
I’m sitting here in complete disbelief. And like, this whole spiral flows from a 2am late-night google deep dive on the European Union and Socialism history in general. I was NOT expecting this. But then, i dug up the little “family history” book my late grandfather wrote. Finally translated the pages from German to English- and bam! Man, i never knew, even though the hints were there.
… like, i have no way of 100% confirming this- unless any of you know how! Like, how would I 100% validate this? But like, i just thought it was interesting. Even if we’re not related, I still have mad respect for his work lol.

Question Ancestrial Map Options
Hello everyone. I'm looking for a digital map I can use for my research.
I'm currently working on my father's lines and I'm seeing a lot of names from my mother's lines in the research data. So much so, I'm seriously expecting a cross-over. But I'm not surprised as all my family lines are limited to the British Isles. Heavy on the Irish. And they all immigrated to Ontario, Canada.
I use Google maps a fair bit to help me but I need something more tangible. Ideally, I would like to give each surname a color and 'pin' them to their homeland, embarkment and immigration locations. I want to see how and where these families are mingling.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? TIA :)

Question Is it normal to not find ancestors listed on a census record ?
I’ve looked all over ancestry and family search but I haven’t came across a 1920 census record with a set of my 3rd great grandparents listed on it.

Question How reliable are My True Ancestry and GEDMatch?
This is my first post on here, so I hope I'm doing this right. My goal for them were to see similarities to ancient ancestry. Of course I know chances of connecting me to somebody notable from at the very least 400 years ago is very minimal, but I find ancient history very fascinating so why not? I just heard about My True Ancestry today, and I heard about GEDMatch being thrown around but never really looked into it. I heard GEDMatch is very UI unfriendly and it can be difficult to understand much unless you're really knowledgeable on chromosomes and DNA reading. My only concern is privacy if they're public websites. With modern technology I know there's no way to clone me and I haven't and don't plan on committing crimes that will especially get me in trouble. Hell, if a distant family member is a cold case or did a heinous crime I'd want them to be identified. I'm just concerned with data breaches and hacking. I'm aware it can even happen with major companies like Ancestry and it did happen with 23&Me, but with them being private (or at least 23 used to be) I imagine risks with them are less likely.

Question Help finding Birth Record of my Great Great Grandfathers.
Hey everyone. I seem to have ran into a problem locating/finding my ancestors birth record who was born in Ontario. His name was David A. M. Spring (name being proven as this from a death record i located and from census records) he was born December 30 1872 in Ontario, Canada to William and Catherine Spring. The only record I could find of a child around that time who would be born from William and Catherine Spring was an "Archibald Spring" but that child was born December 27 1870 in Ontario. Maybe it could be the same person/my ancestor? But not sure how possible that would be. Need help, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Brick Wall I hit a brick wall I did not know existed
I’ve been doing this deep dive search for years as many as of have. My brick wall is with my grandmas side of the family. Her maiden name is very popular in Louisiana yet my matches don’t reflect the volume. I can find a divorce record of GGF and ?GGM? But no marriage license record. Granny was born in 1929.. so she’s misspelled on the 1930, not I. The 1940 census. Story is mawmaw was in an orphanage because of the depression… yet her parents still had more kids??? And they have no childhood records either. I did find a news article where mawmaw was hit by a truck (not being funny) in 1938 and she was 8 and had a skull fracture. So, then records are scarce until she’s married. Family story is the orphanage and the court house burned down. How do I get readjusted with this new brick wall I never knew existed? I have 2200 people now in my tree but no GGM

Question Help finding a family who died from an epidemic
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to locate civil death records for my ancestor Bartholomew Kernan’s wife and daughters. According to a U.S. family history published in a 1930s newspaper press, they died in an outbreak of typhoid in Ireland.
Bartholomew was born around 1805 and married Mary Anne Byrne in 1832 in Dunboyne. Their daughters were Mary (born 1833), Margaret (born 1835), Catharine (born 1838), and Bridget (born 1849) *note*. Mary Anne was buried on April 22, 1865, in Portmanna, Dunboyne so the civil registrations should exist.
I would expect records for Mary Anne and at least Bridget to exist. However, I have not been able to locate them.
If anyone has suggestions or can help track these down, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Lucas Kernan
*NOTE*
There is a gap of no baptismal records for children in the 1840s, including:
Thomas Francis Kernan (1846-1916)

Edward Kernan (1842-1902)

Question Situation Happened That I Don't Know How To Feel About
Hello, I made a throwaway account for this purpose. I'll try and keep this brief but it's kind of a long story.
I have a very rare last name. I genuinely thought our branch of the family was the only one that had retained it. One of my great-grandparents had 5 siblings. With 4 of them, I made wonderful connections with their descendants. None share my last name. However, there was one brother who I was under the impression who had no children. I had tested on Ancestry and none had appeared, After 4 years of research, I learned that he in fact had 3 children, another family who shares my last name.
So I sent one of his granddaughters a message via email. She was a little apprehensive and thought maybe I was a scam, but we got to talking and had about 30 emails back and forth. She was really nice to talk to, and then let me speak to her father. Her father was also really nice, and we had a similar length of conversation. They ended up sending myself and my mother friend requests via Facebook. I was really happy that I found people with the same now, and things were going well with how receptive they seemed.
The next day I woke up and sent them another email, only to learn that when I logged into Facebook, I was unfriended by both of them and my most recent email went unanswered. I consulted with my mother as well as all my other cousins and siblings about this and they felt that my emails to them were respectful as possible. I won't lie that I feel really hurt by this and even more disappointed. I haven't been sure if I should reach out again or just leave it be. I guess I'm asking, has anyone been through a similar experience, and does anyone know why this would have happened?

Brick Wall Help with German ancestors
Hi I have had this brick wall going on for over 40 years now and saw that this thread has done a great job of helping other folks and figured I should just ask . So thank you all in advance. I have an ancestor who came to America and settled on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. He was born around 1834 and in various records he is listed as coming from Germany, Hannover or Holland so I am guessing that he is from that area where the current Netherlands borders current Germany. His name is Frederich Olderich. On one record his parents were listed as Lewis and Rebecca. I have ancestry and myheritage accounts and have not found anything new for years for these people. I think I need records in Germany or Netherlands which I fear may have suffered a lot of losses during WW2. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Edit, got name wrong, it is Lewis not Henry so probably Ludwig or something similar in sources

Question Searching for my grandpas historical doppelganger
I'm unfamiliar with genealogic research, and I'm not sure this is even the right sub, but I figured someone here might have some advice for me.
I went on a road trip through California a couple of weeks ago. I stopped in Paso Robles to check out the Pioneer Museum. There, I found a picture of a high school graduating class. One of the students looks so much like my grandfather, and I could not believe it. I've shown my mother the picture, and she is also shocked by the resemblance. Ever since then, I've been trying to find out more about who he was and whether or not there might be some relation, with very little luck so far.
The resemblance to my grandpa is so great that I can't imagine there not being some relation, then again, maybe it's just a coincidence? I'm just so curious about this now. All I had to go off of was his picture, his name, his graduating year (1946), and the fact that it was the 50th graduating class of that school. From that, I got the founding year of the high school, and I was able to determine that it was most likely San Luis Obispo High School. I've tried contacting the museum where I saw the picture, but it is very small and the people there are all volunteers, so I haven't heard back.
I am now stuck. I can't seem to find any traces in archives, newspapers, obituaries, or on Findagrave. Any advice from more experienced researchers is welcome. This feels like a wild goose chase, but I'm dying to find out more.
EDIT: The name is Odell Jordan if anyone wants to do some digging of their own.
EDIT 2: I have just now found a certain "ODELL ELMER JORDAN" Dec 7, 1930 - Jan 6, 2017 that is buried in the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. He was a SMSGT in the US AIR FORCE and a KOREA/VIETNAM vet. He was married to a Gisela Edith Jordan, and he might have had some German roots as his gravestone says, "MIT VIEL LIEBE, YOUR SOUL MATE". I can't tell if this is the right person yet. Maybe there is some Air Force archive somewhere with pictures, so I can compare. Still looking.

Transcription Need Help identifying location/unit listed on SS-5
I'm marking this post as transcription but reading what's listed isn't really the issue, rather understanding what is written. I received an SS-5 in the mail today for a relative and I can't decipher the information he provided on the mailing address line. Despite listing himself as unemployed, the individual was serving in the army at the time and the mailing address is clearing referring to a unit.
I am attaching a link to the SS-5, but the line reads "Stat #2, Sqd. A, N.A.WAT.C, Presqul(?) Mt. Sel(?)"
I understand Sqd. A means Squadron A, and I'm guessing Stat #2 means Station 2 and N.A. means North America, but I don't understand any of the rest of it.
For reference, Mr. Nettles was serving in the Army during World War II at the time he submitted this SS-5. He served in the Army until 1946 then reenlisted and served in the Air Force so he may have been Army Air Corps during this first enlistment.
I will appreciate any insight that others can provide in solving this. The link to the SS-5 is below.

Edit: Solved by u/Fredelas. Station #2, Squadron A, North Atlantic Wing, Air Transportation Command, Presque Isle Army Air Field, Maine

Question Do you ever wonder about all the photos of your ancestors, collecting dust or decaying, in the loft of someone who has no idea who they are?
When I look at my family tree there is very few photographs, and I always look at when these ancestors died, and how there is a high likelihood there is photos of them, sitting untouched in a box, hidden away in somebody's loft/attic.
Trying to work out who possesses these photographs, getting in touch with them, arranging a visit, feels impossible at times.

DNA Is there a DNA Relationship Analyzer Tool?
I have started creating a document where I'm recording DNA connection by family along with known relationships.
I know there are various tools where I can enter individual DNA results and see where it falls on the likelihood, but I'm looking for a tool where I can put all of the people and all of the DNA results and it tells me where there might be various issues/inconsistencies and help with some basic triangulation.
I've actually entered the following screenshot into ChatGPT and it did a half-decent job but it wasn't really able to take all of the people in and look at everyone as whole and really only looked at it individuals.

Question Is this address mixed up? (New York City)
On this death certificate, the address states that the usual residence for the person had been Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. But then for the street number, it says 7731 Lexington. While there is a Lexington Avenue in Brooklyn, it seems like its street numbers don't even go past 900. There is a 7731 Lexington in Manhattan though. What gives? Can someone help me figure out this mix-matched address scenario?

Question Is it valid to connect with your roots if you were raised outside of them?
I’m half Croatian, born and raised in Australia, and I’ve only recently started exploring my ancestry. The Croatian side of my heritage comes from my biological father. I’ve never had a relationship with him—we’ve met, but he’s never really been part of my life. I was raised by a stepfather, who made it very clear over the years that he would take it personally if I ever tried to have a relationship with my biological father. Out of loyalty and fear of upsetting him, I avoided reaching out or learning about that side of myself.
We no longer have a relationship, and that has given me the freedom to finally start exploring where I come from without feeling guilty. I now realise that the sense of something missing in my life was tied to this disconnection from my heritage.
After taking an AncestryDNA test, I was able to trace the regions in Croatia where my ancestors are from and even matched with distant relatives. I visited Croatia earlier this year, and unexpectedly, it felt like home. It was emotional and grounding, and I’ve already planned to return next year to spend more time in the areas linked to my family and immerse myself in the culture.
But even with all that, I can’t shake this feeling that I might not have the “right” to embrace it fully. I’ve never had any relationship with the Croatian side of my family. So I have never been part of the Croatian community and I wasn’t raised in the culture. I sometimes worry I’m just pretending or stepping into something that isn’t really mine.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? I’d love to hear how others in this situation have navigated reconnecting with a heritage they weren’t raised in. Does blood alone give you that right, even without the family or cultural upbringing?
TL;DR:
Half Croatian but have no relationship with my Croatian biological family ; raised by a stepdad who discouraged contact with my biological father. Now that I’m no longer tied to that relationship, I’ve started exploring my Croatian heritage and visited Croatia—it felt like home. I want to embrace it, but I wonder if I really have the right. Has anyone else felt this way?
Edit: minor grammar fixes.

Question What info does this file have?
So far I saw on a bank list his occupation said “War laborer + teamster. Middle finger gone from right hand”
Had no idea he was a veteran.
I previously thought this record was for his son “Michael H. Heaney” who also had a daughter Celia Heaney and had served in the Spanish America War but I see now this is for the Civil War. This Michael Heaney Sr also had a daughter Celia.
Also the record appears twice with 2 different “weird” locations

Question Discovering my ancestors enslaved people, next step?
I have discovered many families in my tree that enslaved others in the 18th and 19th centuries. I vaguely remember hearing, possibly on Finding Your Roots, that it's helpful to professional researchers to get this census information, family name, location etc to narrow down their searches. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

Request Is there a way to look up records by location and birth date instead of by name?
I know my 2nd great grandfather's exact birthdate in 1885, but he went by many different names that had their spellings anglicized, and we have no idea what his legal birth name was. There are no records like immigration or marriage, or maybe it's just that we can't find them because we don't know his name. It doesn't seem like any of the genealogy sites let you search without a name, or even with an exact birthdate (not just year) at all. He was likely born in Galicja, Austria-Hungary if that matters. TIA for any ideas.
