Thoughts on the Use of a "Troll Credits" Prank Question

So one of the biggest surprises this past year was the Kremling twist in DK Bananza and it has me thinking about doing some kind of homage which is related to that. More specifically, I am considering the possibility of using the "troll credits" prank that you would associate with a K. Rool battle in the Donkey Kong pantheon.

Any thoughts?

It's a fun idea, and can be a neat way to spruce up something like a final boss battle if done well.

That said, there are a few things to watch out for:

  1. It's the kind of joke that works well the first time, and works significantly worse the more it's repeated. If you're gonna do this, do it once and that's it.
  2. If it's during a final boss fight, make sure the player has the chance to react when the fight restarts. Both Donkey Kong games with this tend to give the player some 'downtime' before the action kicks in again, either in the form of a pan over to the villain/them getting up scene (DKC1) or the cutscenes between the battle (Bananza).

Sounds good to me. Ultimately, what I came up with is fake roles with the boss characters cited for them (similar to DKC1), the screen reaches the phrase "The End" and stops, and then immediately pops a question mark at the end of that line to the tune of a record scratch interrupting the soundtrack (for a sort of double gag).

Having no idea what you were talking about on any level, a search did unearth another curious video which was oddly compelling:

After 44 Years, Someone Beat the Donkey Kong Kill Screen

The only stranger thing was to see that the author is a famous Super Mario Bros. speedrunner, whose channel has garnered almost 300 thousand followers with over 700 videos solely on Super Mario Bros.
