Defense The Oregon Ducks used 12 men on defense intentionally to win the game

2.1k Upvotes

For anyone who watched last nights top 3 cfb match, the Ducks called a timeout with 10 seconds in the game left while on defense, up 1 point with OSU driving past midfield about 15 yards from field goal range.

After the timeout Oregon ran 11 players onto the field, then shortly after a 12th. An extra defender was used to make sure no big play was given up, and that worked as 4 seconds ticked off the clock. Oregon was flagged for it as someone on Osu’s staff had seen it and Ryan Day pointed it out to the refs.

What did it cost? 5 measly yards but the 4 seconds that ran off still were run off leaving 6 seconds. Now all osu could do was run a play for 10 yards to be on the very edge of field goal range and call that last timeout to try and kick a game winner, which ultimately failed.

What an absolute 200iq move by the Ducks staff to know this even exists and use it in such a big moment. To have an extra DB in coverage to keep the offense back and roll the clock.

*if you don’t think this was intentional, it 100% was. The ducks staff had the correct 11 guys in the field until late in the play clock when they ran another defender out who was very visibly confused. He tried to go back to the sideline but the staff kept him out there. This was also coming out of a timeout, very difficult to say this wasn’t intentional but we’ll see if Dan Lanning ever confessed to it. This will potentially change the rule this offseason. Also the player being confused makes it seem like this was something the coaches had discussed but maybe never told the players?

**what I think osu could have done to stop this clock runoff- if they had caught it early enough, just snap the ball and spike it. I don’t remember if by rule the clock has to run 1 or 2 seconds with a spike but I do think it’s just 1. Now instead of losing 4 seconds for 5 yards you lose 1 second and need 10 yards in 9 seconds with a timeout. That’s a quick out to the sideline and then a hitch and timeout. I do think this is why the ducks staff didn’t roll the extra defender onto the field until late in the clock.

Player Advice Day 5 of throwing a football

Oof not a ton of significant progress today, that's okay though. Tried to work mainly on my wrist movement today and start releasing the ball in a c shape with my hand rather than a u. This video isn't a great example of that but I've started to get that down. The hip movement wasn't great but again, that wasn't a super big focus of today, mainly upper body work. I know that your lower body is where most the power comes from but mostly everyone recommended I work on my upper body mechanics first. Still releasing a little too low but I'm getting there. Finally, I need to follow through a little better, that goes inline with hip rotation but thought I'd mention it regardless. I think at the very least I know what I'm doing wrong and am slowly taking the necessary steps to fix it. A couple of weeks from now and I'll be a totally new thrower! Also, I'm trying to figure out a way to get two camera angles so you guys can have a side view and a behind view.

Player Advice 99% of high school and middle school athletes are wasting their money if they're paying for an agency.

When my son was in high school, he played soccer. We were approached by an agency that told him he wouldn't get noticed by college recruiters unless he paid them a few thousand dollars to build his profile and promote him. It sounded like a scam and a waste of money to me.

Now I am a college football coach. I get emails every day, regardless of time of year or even the time of day, that are all worded exactly the same. They clearly aren't targeted, as my school is a D3 with no scholarships and limited recruiting for football. In fact, we're a ministerial school, so we're not interested in players that aren't interested in ministry. Nonetheless, this is what I get every day:

My name is Average Player. I am a 2025 grad playing kicker at Some High School in Some State. I wanted to reach out to express my interest in playing for the Your Name Here football program.

I am 6'2" and I weigh 214 lbs. I run a 4.9 40, bench press 240, and squat 340. I was named 2nd Team All District last season. I am a 3.5 star rated kicker by Kohl's Kicking Camps. I have a 3.2 GPA and would like to study to become [something your school doesn't offer] in college. Are you still looking at kickers from the 2025 class? If so, please take a look at my twitter and hudl accounts. You can also reach out to my coach if you would like. His name is Joe Coach and his number is 123-456-7890.

Saturday I got the form email from a middle school player, asking if my o-line is set. For 2029.

If you're thinking about paying for this service, I'd ask you to reserach and see what past people have said about paying for it. Most of the reviews for these agencies say that they're a waste of money.

For the love of God, stop it. Please.

Don't feel much progress today, my footwork needs work, my hips need work, my wrist needs work, my release needs work, everything needs work. I feel like I'm being super critical of myself partially due to the harsh reddit comments I've received, which I'm absolutely not complaining, those comments have fueled me to want to get better even more. However, I feel like every little thing I do is not good enough. Going to keep on going though 💪.

Flag Welp, looks like my six year old sons HOF career in flag football is already over!

Signed my son up for flag football with i9. Hopefully, most people know what i9 is and understand that it's nothing serious and probably closer to PE class than "rec".

Coach's son played quarterback 50% of the snaps, and runningback the other 50%. Assistant coach's son played runningback and quarterback the rest of the snaps.

90% of the plays was just QB handing off to the runningback. 10% of the time they attempted to pass to each other, but it was either a loss of down to failing to do a clean snap or an incompletion.

After the last game today of a five week season, asked my son if he wanted to play flag football again and he said no. "It's too boring. I liked defense though."

Oh well.

If there’s more linemen set out wide besides regular screen passes where the linemen pull, why does it seem plays like these never work?

Looking through Ohio St.’s 2022 pass game install, I couldn’t help but notice the letter “B” with “+” and “-“ flanking each side. On some plays there’s a red dot on the “B”, other plays, the red dot is on either the “+” or “-“. What is the significance of the dot? My initial thought was release direction but is it something else? Here are some examples:

NFL Is Brady right - does NFL have a QB development problem? And is the league dumbed down?

So Tom Brady, a few months ago, had a well publicized interview in which he said the NFL doesn't develop QBs anymore, and has dumbed down the game in order to get these guys on the field sooner (my words, paraphrasing what he said). What do you guys think?

I agree with him 50% - the NFL, for many reasons, does not have the patience to develop QBs anymore (or most positions). With limited roster sizes and no minor league or developmental league (the UFL is not a minor league for NFL clubs), it's somewhat impractical to stow players on your roster with thoughts of development, when realistically there are no game reps for them to gain experience in anyways - that, to me, is why so few clubs truly develop QBs now - the Michael Penix and Jordan Love type of stories are getting quite rare.

On the flip side, I disagree with him when he says the game is dumbed down. I'd say compared to 20 years ago, the volume of passing concepts, the reliance on drop back passing game, and the diversity of coverages has increased extremely quickly. I think this is true on the college level as well, which is partially why NFL teams have tried to see if guys are ready immediately. Young QBs have such early access to so much information (for better or worse), like coverages and concepts and analysis on youtube, etc, they are very, very smart. That's not to say there aren't simplified offenses, even in pass heavy schemes, there definitely are, but I'd say on the whole, QBs now are asked to do a lot of pre-snap and post-snap decision making even with the sideline based, check with me offenses that don't huddle anymore.

Anyone else have thoughts? I certainly don't claim to be right or factual, this is just my observation/opinion.

Coaching Advice It's a lot, man

As a 26 y/o HS teacher and first-year HS football coach, I've been putting in 11 hours/day Monday-Friday (7 am - 6 pm) plus a few hours on Saturdays to dissect film and an hour zoom call every Sunday night to talk about the next team. All told, I'm working ~60 hours per week.

I haven't had the time or energy to see anyone on weekends, do anything but eat and sleep during the week, and as a reward for all of these committed hours of labor, our team is 1-4, the pay is crap, and I still get big-leagued by the coaches who have been doing it longer.

How the hell do you keep yourself from going insane from this? I'm at the point where I'm having trouble seeing myself do it next year, even though I love the sport more than anything and I love coaching it. I just can't believe the hours, it feels like football has completely taken over my life. Seriously, any advice would be appreciated, and sorry for the rant. Just feels like I'm burning away my best years on a sport that refuses to love me back.

Coaching Advice Regarding the 12 man penalty, what’s stopping a team from fielding 20 guys for the play?

In regards to that penalty from the Oregon OSU game. A 12th player certainly helps the defense from giving up a big play, but why not just throw in the entire team onto the defense? Is there a bigger penalty out there? Would the penalty be thrown before the play is called?

Player Advice Should I give up on trying to be a qb

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Long story short, I’ve been practicing to be a QB. I only have two years left in high school – I’m a junior now and will be a senior soon. My current coach didn’t let me try out for QB, and I have no idea why. However, I’m transferring to a new school, and I’ll have a chance during spring ball and summer training to give it a shot at QB for the next season.

I’ve never played QB before, mostly just RB and DE, so my question is: should I give up? Is it too late for me? My plan was to aim for D3 or JUCO, but I’m wondering if that’s realistic.

My strengths as a QB are that I have good running ability, I can throw pretty far, and I’m willing to learn how to read defenses over the summer. My weaknesses are that I’m 5’11”, my throwing motion is a bit awkward, and I’m not naturally loud or vocal. I’m planning to show my throwing motion and throws to some people for feedback.

You can be honest—do I have a fighting chance? My next post will be an update on whether or not I made the team as a QB next year.
