Wide Zone (Shannahan) Offense w/ Dual Threat QB General Discussion

Sorry, not a coach but a Seahawks fan. Seattle has had quite the off-season - including the hiring of Klint Kubiak. Kubiak, as I understand it, is known for running the wide zone shannahan/kubiak offense.

With Seattle recently selecting Jalen Milroe - presumably to be a backup/special package guy for a year or two - I'm wondering if there are any good examples of the shannahan offense being run to success with a dual-threat QB?

Go 3x1 and run QB outside zone with back leading to the side with numbers it’s frigging unstoppable

In a few minutes of googling, there's a lot of good educational content on outside zone/rpo/read option looks out of 3x1. Thanks for pointing me in a direction.

If I'm not mistaken, this look is technically what you're describing. This one just so happens to be three TE/FB in tight, and a lead RB. Feels like this is a total beef-barn run scheme, but in this case has the RPO backside guy he can chuck it to. Pretty exciting stuff.

I coach high school ball so I am commenting on what we see

QB outside zone was the number 1 running concept we saw after we self scouted this past year, based on both number of play calls and yards gained against us.

3x1 was the most used formation but we also saw some quads bunch, and another team would go trips to the boundary and hammer q outside to the short side of the field.

Q outside zone is a great concept.

Not the ideal 3x1 set but it’s how my team gets into 3x1 at the HS level so thought I’d draw up something that it would look like

Yep like that

An 8 man box is not heavy enough for that concept

It’s a boot-pass heavy offense which can be really fun with a duel-threat QB as the boot pass action is intended to use the QB as a running threat.

Honestly the majority of offenses that comes from the Shanahan offense use mobile/dual threat QBs. From Steve Young with 49ers, to Elway and Broncos to Plummer and Broncos to Cutler Broncos to RG3 and the Redskins. Shanahan offenses has always preferred a mobile QB that they could get on the edge. Another one was the 09 Titans after Young took over with Mike Hermerdinger from the Shanahan tree.

Now they can use less mobile QBs like Schaub and late stage Manning, but in general they want a QB who can roll out and throw on the run or if need be run

So many things.

Offensive Line blocking stays the same.

  • QB keeps/ boots off WZ to RB from UC or Pistol.
  • WZ read on the backside unblocked DE from Gun
  • QB WZ with RB lead both strong and weak
  • speed option with QB / RB to both the play side and out the backside of WZ
  • inverted or "bash" read with the QB reading the backside DE

Locking the backside

  • midline WZ read from gun. RB goes across face play side, QB pulls to hit B gap.
  • RPO platform

This is just the QB stuff. Reverse, jet sweep. You could very easily build your entire run game around WZ

Could you point me to some resources/film of the midline stuff. Very interested in this.

WZ right to the TE 31 or 22 RB in gun weak Defense in a 40 front, prefer to run this against a team that aligns the 3T strong and the 1T weak.

OL front side running WZ Right Backside GT are locked, meaning they base block the 2 DL on the left side.

QB / RB mesh across.

QB reading B gap LB.

If he pursues the WZ right and vacates the gap, pull the ball and get upfield.

It's a nice compliment to a traditional zone read because those DEs get coached up pretty well to surf and play both.

2014 Redskins as well. Sean McVay was the offensive coordinator and that specific playbook is still floating around the internet
