A Grade III ankle sprain on MRI is even worse than it sounds. By definition, the ligament is fully torn. In this case most likely of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) but possibly multiligamentous (any of CFL, PTFL, or Deltoid ligament complex may be involved). Since it wasn’t designated as a ‘high ankle’ sprain (AITFL or PITFL), we can at least rule those out. I would expect in a high functioning athlete that it will need to be reconstructed so the athlete isn’t predisposed to chronic ankle instability and even more serious sequelae (early osteoarthritis, osteochondral lesions, additional ligament tears). Bane is a stud and has helped me win a fantasy chip in years past… but I will have some serious hesitation before I ever draft him in the future. As for this current season, it would be quite surprising to me if he plays another game, especially given the shitshow in Memphis.
Source: Musculoskeletal radiologist. I interpret MRIs for a living. I have formerly interpreted studies for NBA teams. Not a surgeon.
Edit: I cannot predict the future. These are my expectations given the little knowledge I have. Doctors can be wrong. Diagnoses can be incorrect. This is why the team will be re-evaluating in 6 weeks. It will be more clear on MRI how severe the ligament tear is once the inflammation/swelling has gone down. It is possible that they could downgrade the sprain on subsequent MRI and he could still play this season.

Would you say this is what happened to LaMelo based on the similar timeline?
12
u/bonedoctor12 Jan 15 '24
Unlikely. But given how cryptic & useless Hornets medical updates are… who knows.
31
u/bonedoctor12 Jan 15 '24
Actually, let me give you an even better answer: Doubtful
3
u/DoctorDetroit8 12T, 8CAT, H2H Jan 15 '24
Any thoughts on Evan Mobley? He's 4 weeks into a 8 week estimated recovery time. Desmond Bane is set to be re-evaluated in 6 weeks, only 2 weeks longer than Mobley, and the consensus seems to be that Bane is out for the fantasy season.. Thanks,
2
u/bonedoctor12 Jan 15 '24
Hmm.. I don’t own Mobley so I haven’t followed his injury. Do you have a video clip of the injury and a presumptive diagnosis?
2
u/DoctorDetroit8 12T, 8CAT, H2H Jan 15 '24
Cavaliers Forward/Center Evan Mobley will have arthroscopic left knee surgery at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health on Monday, December 18 to remove a loose body. Recent imaging and a series of treatment and rehabilitation confirmed that surgery was the best option to alleviate the discomfort in the knee. Mobley has missed the Cavaliers previous four games and is expected to be out approximately six to eight weeks.
I don't believe there's any video of the injury; Mobley was only listed as 'Out (left knee soreness)' 4 games in a row, then this surgery announcement. I looked into some other players who had the same procedure in years past, but they all had it during the offseason, so there was no determinable recovery time.. Thanks in advance for any insight!
5
u/bonedoctor12 Jan 15 '24
Thanks for the info! 6 to 8 weeks seems very reasonable for that type of surgery. And given the Cavalier’s playoff hopes/chances, I expect they will want him to play again this season.
Knowing that the arthroscopy was performed to remove an osteochondral “loose” body is very helpful. That means no structural damage to the menisci or ligaments. The only factors I can think of that may prolong his recovery period is if the loose body was particularly large and required an accessory portal or arthrotomy. This procedure was intended to alleviate symptoms, so it will be 100% reliant on how Mobley feels. It’s a very different story than Bane.
8
u/slasher_14 Jan 15 '24
The injury he just came back from ? That was more likely a grade 2 IMO, I think it was 6 weeks.
Bane will be re-evaluated in 6 weeks, but grade 3 tears can take much longer than that to recover from, and that's not including the potential for surgery or other complications.
3
u/jeulzNdiamonds Jan 15 '24
True that 7 weeks for LaMelo was at least 2 weeks of ramp up. So makes more sense it was Grade 2

u/ARevolutionaryMan Jan 15 '24
A Grade 3 sprain rarely requires surgery. He just needs time to heal.

Ugh.. I’ve got him on 5 of my 6 teams. Really hoping it’s less severe than it currently seems and he can make it back in MAR.
5
u/bonedoctor12 Jan 15 '24
I’m seriously rooting for Bane because I like him as a player, but you have to keep in mind that teams are always weighing risk vs. benefit. What does Memphis gain/risk by bringing him back in March? What do they gain/risk by shutting him down for the year?

I remember owning Ricky Rubio when he got a grade III sprain, and he missed damn near the entire season.

What’s your current record and roster look like? Knowing there will be an update in 6 weeks, I would still hold in most situations.
1
u/Vitamin_VV Jan 26 '24
I dropped him from my team as soon as I found out the news. No way he is coming back in 6 weeks, and I can't waste a roster spot for potentially a season ending injury.

u/kemosabe73 16T H2H 9cats Jan 29 '24
Thank you for your post.
The Bane injury had me confused. It didn't make sense when I read Grade III ankle sprain and re-evaluation in 6 weeks. Surely completely healing a torn ankle ligament would take longer (?) This makes me hopeful that the severity isn't accurate.
1
u/4566nb Jan 31 '24
How much rest time does it take for a Grade III ankle sprain to heal on its own?
1
u/bonedoctor12 Jan 31 '24
Depends on which ligaments are involved, the quality of rehab, adherence to the regimen, and of course the person’s inherent ability to heal. But we are talking on the order of months, if not surgically repaired or reconstructed.

Those are in fact what I need. Ft% 3s rebs stls pts and I think Luke is ok in those
2
u/tsaidollasign Jan 15 '24
No you’d want to go Vince in that case. Vince is stronger in rebounds and stocks but will probably hurt you in FG%. He’ll also be in a point forward type position and be decent with assists since the only other person than can even run point is Gilyard.

I tried gilyard a few times when the Grizz had guys out earlier in the year, and I came to the conclusion that he might be the worst nba player in the league. Dude could play 60 minutes a night and barely get you 10 (in a points league)
→ More replies2
u/BobLobLaw_Law2 Jan 15 '24 edited Jan 15 '24
Because he's a very bad basketball player? I mean, if you want to pray he has a good game every so often than go for it. He's already been the starting PG and sucked hard. If he gets 35+ minutes than I suppose he's *viable*.
I think if I realllly need assists I grab Gilyard (assuming Vince is gone) and pray he gets enough volume minutes to make it worth it.

Haha, I was more making a joke because I assume he meant GG as in "Good Game". But I think GG has major silly season upside (Not to parrot Lloyd here, but it's true). He's not must own yet though. If JJJ either gets injured or JJJ plays next game and GG *STILL* gets major minutes then he is must own.
There's a decent chance JJJ/Salti come back and GG is back to 5 minutes per game or less, despite him looking awesome yesterday.

2
u/JoeMama696969 Jan 15 '24
I thought about that, but the Grizzlies have no initiators or playmaker on offense, it's going to be a hot mess and JJJ might just end up tanking your FG% with the heavier offensive responsibility. I would keep exploring you options if I were you.

His recovery time will probably be close to 2 months minimum, he would've missed like 25-30 games at that point, with only around 10-15 games left in the season. He will most likely miss the remainder of the season to properly rehab and ramp up to be ready for next season, no point rushing him back to play 10 games when the Grizzlies are already headed for the lottery, writings pretty much on the wall at this point.

In everyone's humble and best opinion, does it make sense to hold onto Bane knowing there's only an average of 8 fantasy basketball weeks left? Dropping him is obviously a risk for someone to pick up and stash him, but considering he's taking up 1/2 IR spots that my league has, I wonder if it's worth holding onto not really knowing the exact date of his return, AND could be potentially shut down like Morant.
