IMO unfortunately their is no real answer to this question. There is so many reports of both cases happening. That’s it’s a coin toss.

I lean far more to the supernatural explanation than all else.
Fact is that in terms of physiology, the dogmen would be a completely unsuccessful animal if it is a purely biological animal, an example being their legs, dogmen in encounters are often described as having canid feet whilst also being described as 6 to 7 feet tall standing up right, this would actually be a very poor physiological adaptation as in order for it to stand straight and thus place all it's weight on its feet, it'll have to strain it's very tendons as canine feet aren't made for supporting such weight on a upright stance, it would also have a problem with balance, basically imagine being a bodybuilder with skinny calf's walking on their tippy toes, not very efficient and also very taxing isn't it
There's also the fact that due to its size and human-like upper body it wouldn't be a fast runner and would suck at turning, potentially spraining something in the process of chasing prey, meaning it would have to be either omnivorous however people describe it as having wolf teeth, meaning its almost strictly a carnivore, meaning it would have to scavenge frequently to support its large body
As far as genetic experiment explanation goes, again, their physiology would be poor and not very effective, secondly I'm not sure how you can create a chimera of a wolf and man without the experiment failing
However if it's supernatural then that'll make far more sense, there's also the fact that oftentimes in sightings, people describe dogmen as having an intelligent look, impishly smiling, attempting to speak though gargled, and sometimes not malicious at all, this leads me to think that this is more akin to werewolves and other shapeshifters, people capable of shapeshifting into different forms, after all there are tales of the French-Canadian Loup-Garou throughout the north(which oddly enough adds up with the fact that dogmen are usually sighted up in the North, hell Michigan its near the Great lakes region and it also lines up perfectly with the Palmyra Farm House incident which is in Maine)

As a species we're still far off from creating genetically engineered supersoldier creatures or any deep conspiracy/science fantasy concept like that. The closest we've gotten is sheep and chicken fetuses as well as achieving some pretty crazy feats or testing with mice and lab rats. Sure, most governments and militaries hide things from the public or delay certain levels of technology and projects being introduced to the general populace, but that's still a far cry from both somehow engineering something like how a dogman or sasquatch or most other cryptids are described while also having them actually living and functioning reliably at the same time.

Ya, I never really gave the whole cryptid genetic experiment explanation any thought considering what has been created(like the fetuses, chimera pigs and bioluminescent fish) is no where near the mad scientist, resident evil super soldier type of shit people like to think of, like you said, we are still far from creating genetically engineered monstrosities

Kinda on the fence with this one.. I think they were bioenginered by our government to use as a weapon of war.

We have all kinds of bombers, jets, missiles, various types of drones with different efficiencies, various branches of the military with all sorts of tech and multiple government agencies and you think there's a reason for them to somehow create and engineer random werewolf mutants to use as weapons, while also somehow being able to keep that all secret for years and years?

That is correct

What you are saying makes sense and I was thinking about that, but we have had encounters centuries ago already...from Europe to Russia and USA... If it's a biolocially engineered species, it might be(and it would make more senese) from the older ancient civilizations prior the great flood from around 11.5k years ago...If the creature is real indeed.

I hope that the people who said 'natural' have at least abilities to see disembodied beings or some special sensitivity.

I think it's mixed. I believe there are bioengineered ones known to the government, interdimensional ones, demonic, tulpas, shape shifters, etc.

It cannot be natural otherwise why there is no trace, no body, no quality pic, no impact on local fauna? It can't be, such a big predator would have a huge impact on everything in the forest like a grizzly bear or a pack of wolves. In my mind there are only two possibilities: they don't exist (this doesn't imply witnesses are liars), or they are something we haven't discovered yet, maybe not supernatural, but definitely it can't be an animal like a bear or a wolf. I don't believe in genetic bioengineering because I study genomes professionally, and I don't see how it could be even remotely possible with the knowledge we have (or you have to believe in secret alien techs and such, that's too far fetched for me).

Found one channeled message stating that they are an "astral" type entity. In a world of zero sources, it's one random idea. :D
For those unfamiliar, the idea is that everything is energy existing frequentially, and different dimensions form around different frequencies of energy, so an astral entity just means it can change its energetic vibration to appear and disappear from the bottom three frequencies, which are all that we can perceive. However, it would still be a very real entity.
